Netherlands v Switzerland, 18 March 2017

Postby NedRugby » Sat, 18 Mar 2017, 01:19

Can't see a topic for this game, so I'll create one quickly.

A brief preview of the game:

Both teams have won 2 and lost 1. Very similar records against Portugal (NL lost 10-26, CH lost 10-28) and against Ukraine (NL won 12-54, CH won 54-18), but NL did much better against Moldova (NL won by 27, CH by 3). Both still have to play in Poland. So it looks like Netherlands has a slight advantage, especially with them playing at home.

Dutch squad:

Swiss team from https://www.facebook.com/SwissRugbyUnion. The usual scrum half Perrod is an absentee

Due to "circumstances" kickoff is delayed till 3:30.

I am not so cynical as to suggest the reason is to increase takings at the bar.

With this result Portugal is the official champion, right?

Portugal has now 19 points and the Netherlands 14, with 1 round left. Isn't the match between them the first tiebreaker?

Yes, you are right.
From this division Ukraine is relegated and Portugal plays a promotion-relegation match on May 20th in Belgium.
For the next round of RWC qualifying in November Portugal will host the winner of the conferences play-offs. My guess: Czech Republic.

That was really a game of two halves. In the first half the Swiss forwards produced really pwerful driving mauls. The only way the Dutch defence could stop them was to bring them down. On one occasion, shortly before half-time Switzerland had a lineout on the Dutch 22, caught and drove all the way to the tryline where the maul was collapsed, resulting in a penalty try, a yellow card for fly-half Storm Carroll (NL down to 13 men at that point) and a scoreline of 11-22. Somehow this seemed to sting NL into action and they were a different team in the second half. Switzerland had two yellows in the second half (though not concurrently). Despite the four yellow cards I didn't think it was a bad-tempered game.
