Currently a 43 man squad is training in Lisbon. Tomorrow this should be cut to the match day 23 which I believe will be our match day 23. So hopefully we will have something to post then. Seems to be a fully born Portugal squad so far.

Is this over two legs? Should be worth watching. Sounds like Portugal are rediscovering some form and I know Belgium surprised me with some of their play in the REC.

Portugal somehow keep RWC qualification alive with a victory? :S

It's a single game. And Portugal path to RWC will be decided by a game in 2018 against the second REC team (bar Georgia) from 2017 and 2018 seasons. It's Belgian slim chances of RWC which are at stake this weekend.

Thanks AF! I don't understand why Portugal would deserve a game against Romania (most likely) if they lose to Belgium. But it makes sense to someone!

Because it's a way to guarantee almost any European nation can qualify for the RWC. Portugal as 2017 RET winner will also play against a lower division team.

I wish both teams well. On one hand it would be nice to have a local derby against Belgium again next year, on the other hand it's nice having both our neighbours in the top flight.

Aderito Estevez and Pedro Leal stand out for me here. They were really good players on the HSBC circuit. Should be a cracker of a match.

My question is what are Portugal playing for? I know Belgium are playing to avoid relegation to the trophy, but what is the incentive for Portugal other than rankings?

Could you be more specific? I was not aware of this part of RWC qualifications.

To make it even more confusing,

If Belgium defeat Portugal, then all matches between Romania, Spain, Germany, Russia and Belgium in both seasons will count towards Rugby World Cup qualifying with the second place team meeting Portugal in the 2018 play-off.

However,

If Portugal defeat Belgium, then only matches between Romania, Spain, Germany and Russia in both seasons will count towards Rugby World Cup qualifying with Portugal awaiting the runner up in the 2018 play-off.

Just quick reminder. These two sides faced each other in a pre season friendly on Nov 12th 2016. Portugal Won 26-21 in Portugal. I expect this to be a very tight game in Brussels

It's confirmed here on the World Rugby site: http://www.worldrugby.org/pnc/news/245152

The article is from last week. The winners of the Conference 1 play-off (Czech Rep. v Malta) and the Conference 2 play-off (Hungary v Bosnia Herzegovina) will play-off and the winners of THAT match will play Portugal in 2018 with the winners playing the 2nd team from Europe (Spain at present) the winners of THAT play Oceania 3 with the winners qualifying and the losers going into the repechage. Complicated isn't the word!

Thanks for link, I get it from FD in the first place anyway.

I do get some of their thinking behind it, this means more games, between tiers and a theoretical chance even for Conference to qualify so it is an inclusive system but on the other hand I find kind of not fair for team which maintained their REC level and played two years for qualification to have it under scrutiny from a team that wasn't able to compete constantly at the same level. Let's say in some good streak Bosnia won vs Portugal and REC no2 have a bad day at the office in the qualification. Isn't this a bit unfair?

Also this philosophy of inclusion if kind of contradicted by having teams which don't play qualifications at all! :P

It's been always like that in Europe, remember how for the previous RWC Germany was really close to an upset against Russia, before the Bears were beaten by Uruguay.

I put my money on Portugal on this one even if this is a disadvantage in the table for Romania. Portugal is always entertaining to watch.

OFF: They keep all kind of tiers&separations but for World Cup they give a "chance" for everybody.
If they really want to give everybody a chance make the competition BIGGER, 24 teams! Also everybody should play qualifiers (except the winners&the hosts).

I know I'm suspect because a Portuguese win helps Spain towards RWC, but I agree with you, Bogdan. REC would improve if Portugal style of play was part of it.

I think, if he makes it, G.Uva would be the first Portuguese centurion?

I have never seen Portugal play so I'm keen to see this. I expect a Belgian win after catching some of their play in the REC. I also expect them to intentionally start a fight if they are bigger than the Portuguese players!
