This is a good thing for the challenge cup, the winner should automatically qualify for the champions cup. Now we just need Enisey to win it this year! :D :D :D

A shame for Italy but an inevitable consequence of joining the Pro12. It was no longer credible to have the 11th best team from the league in the blue-ribbon event. Hopefully this will spur a re-birth of their own league.

Historic. Because now you can start giving places for leagues based on the last years.
Top14
Premiership
Pro12
Challenge Cup Qualifier teams !
So if CCQ-teams overperform they could gain new places for their "league"
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

This is good news – Rugby needs to continue to move away from amateurism or ‘old boys networks’.

If different nations choose to pool their resources into one league (ie the Pro12) then with that comes a risk that you may not qualify for the Champions Cup. This is fair enough, and if nothing else should drive investment and competitiveness within Italian Rugby. There is no reason I can see why Italian teams should underperform against Scottish teams, so this should provide the kick up the arse needed.

In addition, perhaps Zebre and Treviso can compete in the Challenge cup and get into the knock out stages – losing every game in the Champions Cup doesn’t seem to help them.

More generally, I’m keen to see a rethink of the Challenge Cup, ideally increasing to 24 teams, with the 4 extra spaces going to the likes of Spain, Georgia, Russia, Germany etc. You then have the makings of a truly European competition, set up for the future.

A step in the right direction, but only a very little one. I'm not sure it will lead to a change in the relationship between the Challenge Cup and Continental Shield that some are hoping for. I support Italian rugby but there can be no complaints here as long as it remains 7 out of 12 qualify.
