June 10 Canada v. Georgia

Postby rusty_lock » Tue, 06 Jun 2017, 19:01

Canada (23) and Georgia (12) kick off their June test season against each other in Calgary June 10 at 3pm local time. That is 2pm on the left coast and 5pm in the centre of the universe.

Canada is 3-2 against Georgia and has always held the advantage at home. However based on current form Georgia is unquestionably the favourite even though Canada will have as close to its best team as possible since RWC 2015. Canada is ranked lower than it ever has been for as long as there has been a ranking list. There has been a dark cloud hanging over Canada since 2013 and some attribute it's Genesis to the brawl between Canada Georgia in Nov. 2013. Liam Underwood, Canadian flyhalf, was was hit with a vicious high tackle and the ensuing brawl saw captain Tyler Ardron thoroughly beaten. Nothing has been the same since. We beat them in 2015 in RWC warm up but that was a severely understrength Georgian side but positive results have been very hard to come by. A Canadian win would be massive! Expect Canadian coach Mark Anscombe to field the strongest team possible.

A win by Canada would vault them into 21st and a win by 15+ would would see them climb to 20th spot on the WR ranking list. They would be knocking on the the door of 18th spot as less than 1 point would then be separating them from Russia, Nambia and Spain. A loss will have no bearing on their position as Georgia is so far ahead Canada lose no ranking points if they lose. Welcome to Tier 3 rugby Canadian rugby fans.

^ Can't say I disagree with any of your starters. Will this game be televised? I haven't seen anything from Rugby Canada...

Braid's best position is 12, by a long shot. Hearn has covered 15 for London Irish I believe, and has a great boot. I'd switch them around.

Yeah you are probably right with that. I didn't know that he had covered fullback with LI. That probably would changed my thinking

I think that everyone is going to agree on the backs. The only real dispute will be the front row and open side flanker... maybe some arguments about bench players. I know people are down on Buydens but doesn't Brouer play tighthead? I know Barkwell is old and past his best before date but honestly he has a fire that seems to be so desperately missing in our tight five in times past. Piffero has never shown me anything that tips him past Barkwell

I'm really hoping O'Leary shows well. It has been so long since we have had a decent flyhalf.

Brouwer plays both sides of the scrum but is typically Loosehead from what I remember. I know he's started there over DSD a few times the last year. The rest of the props listed are pretty much Loosehead or Tighthead exclusive. Definitely need more longterm options heading forward though. Brouwer, Buydens and Barkwill are all like 35 and shouldn't be required anymore in an ideal world. We need to send some young front row to train in Georgia for a season.

In this game, the rankings don`t tell the whole story. Canada will play with their best players except for a few. (I though DTH van der Merwe was going to join the team ahead of the USA game). I am slightly favoring Canada due to home advantage as well as the players that they have assembled for June. I fully expect Georgia to dominate the scrums, but they will have to turn this advantage into points. Both teams have assembled their best squads. Going to get interesting.

Our form hasn't been good since November. We were utterly terrible in the ENC. Unless something changed since then, Id say this is 50/50.

Hassler is injured? I think he spent a lot of time on the sidelines in his career. Although like we hard learned at World Cup is not easy to keep this guy quiet in the game.

Optimal Georgia my thoughts:

1 - Mikheil Nariashvili
2 - Jaba Bregvadze
3 - Levan Chilachava
4 - Giorgi Nemsadze
5 - Kostantine Mikautadze
6 - Giorgi Tkhilaishvili
7 - Viktor Kolelishvili
8 - Lasha Lomidze
9 - Vasil Lobzhanidze
10 - Lasha Khmaladze
11 - Soso Matiashvili
12 - Merab Sharikadze
13 - David Kacharava
14 - Tamaz Mchedlidze
15 - Merab Kvirikashvili

16 - Shalva Mamukashvili
17 - Karlen Asieshvili
18 - Anton Peikrishvili
19 - Giorgi Chkhaidze
20 - Otar Giorgadze
21 - Giorgi Begadze
22 - Lasha Malaguradze
23 - Alexander Todua

Canada has to stand in Scrums or they will be punished. Georgia has monster scum and this is huge advantage, this makes Lelos to win more territory and attacking position.
But i love how van der Merwe is playing and he is pretty good and dangerous player. Taylor Paris is behind him. Interesting match. Squads will be able tomorrow.

1 - Mikheil Nariashvili

Needs a rest, Aseishvili looks a better option AT THE MOMENT

7 - Viktor Kolelishvili

with so little gametime due to multiple concussions, really doubt of his form

8 - Lasha Lomidze

prefer to use him as a substitute lock >>> Bitsadze is a first choice Eightman considering Gorgadze's injury

14 - Tamaz Mchedlidze

with injury not settled out completely, would be a surprise starter if so

Agree on Nariashvili. Maybe milton will put Asieshvili on 1 and Mataradze on 17.

Lomidze is not Lock and we saw what happened when milton put him on Lock and Romania massacred Georgian Scrum earlier this March.
so Chkhaidze and Cheishvili are Locks and better use them.

Lets see the squad tomorrow. Van der Merwe is dangerous and must be treated seriously.

Lomidze is FAR BETTER at Lock (from the bench for the last 10-15 minutes) than in the Backrow.

That DOES NOT MEAN he is good enough for test Level (even against Tier 2 opposition) at either of the positions!

The main problem was not Lomidze, but Bekoshvili. Not calling on Chilachava for that game was a fatal mistake by coaches.

You do know that Milton called Cheishvili and Chkhaidze for reason right? Lomidze is back row player NOT Lock.
it is stupid to have 2 locks as replacement and move back row up front.

Dala has mostly been focused on 7's since the RWC. Even there he hasn't been seen this year that I remember.

He played flank vs Romnania or am I misremembering things ?

If Mataradze/Bekoshvili duo end up in the front row we might lose the scrum vs Canada, especially if we have semi retired Chkaidze and injured Vito. And we all know how good we are when we don't win in scrums.

Both Chilachava and Nariashvili will be burnt out from to14 it's cruel playing them in these tests, Coaches need to take their heads out of their arses and call up Kulashvili/Kakovin.

Kubriashvili is injured.
Melikidze was not considered, that's curious, he is the guy from the 1996 era with the most professional game played this season, 12 Top14 games, 6 Challenge Cup games and the two qualifying play off the Champions Cup.

At loosehead, Haig could have call Kakovin, or Zhvania

Barkwill adds snark, but he can't back it up. He's usually diving at opposition players feet and at best burrows for about a yard when he has the ball. Smart rugby player though, I'll give him that.

You DO know Georgian proverb "Unless there are dogs, Cats WILL begin barking"

it is stupid to have 2 locks as replacement and move back row up front.

You have seen lots of stupidity and embarrassing from MH&Co, Haven't you?
