Samoa is a small country of 115k, there's only so many genetic outliers you can have over the course of a generation.

Yet smaller American Samoa regularly produces NFL players.

Doesn't seem to have stopped them in the past, and Tonga's even smaller.

That was actually a funny part of the RWC2015 statistic. There was actually one more guy born in American Samoa playing for other countries (= not the USA, two were playing for the USA).

Might be just very random, as one more guy means exactly one guy ;-), Jerome Kaino who moved to NZ at the age of 7, but still interesting.
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

There are more People of Samoan and American Samoan Descent in the US than there are in either locale. And probably the same with Tonga.

Yes I know that. Local American Samoan high schools have produced like 15 NFL players in the last 10 years. I don't have the exact number but it's something like that. From a population of 55k.

Titimaea Tafua has left his position as Samoan head coach with the announcement the SRU has re-advertised the role.

Samoa have named their squad for the November tour already:
https://www.radionz.co.nz/international ... amoa-squad

Based on some NPC (Mitre-10 Cup) TV viewing:
JJ Taulagi looks the real deal.
Melani Matavao (halfback) is a player who has genuinely come through the Samoan system and has moved to NZ to play and is now playing for Otago in the NPC this season, he's been very good.
Don Brighouse (prop) is also coming on quite well.

They have a new coach in Steve Jackson.

Problem are for them will continue to be fly-half. 1 very old, the other is still an amateur.
- Tusi Pisi, Bristol
- D'angelo Leuila, Papatoetoe

So, we might see Tim Nanai Williams playing 10 for them again.

For Samoa's sake, you'd hope Steve Jackson is talking to TJ Va'a and Josh Ioane, two NPC level 10s with Samoan ancestry.

Tier 2 blog article on Samoan development in comparison to Tonga and Fiji.

http://tier2rugby.blogspot.com/2018/11/ ... rugby.html

Much more well researched ..... but pretty much what I had said a year ago earlier in this thread with this post:
