It still bugs me slightly that this is the only non-round robin tournament in Africa for international teams this season, so high up the ladder...

Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

Here is a little info:

Irene Rabinur, professor of socio-linguistics at the University of Tana says the reason why names are so long is because each part has meaning and traditionally there used to be only one name - no separate first name and family names - although European influences in towns are now changing this.

Tana = Antananarivo as even they like to shorten things!

last names are basically concatenations of each parents name. that's why they get really really long.

The 'Ra-' in front means 'blood', as in 'blood of + ancestors'. Names are one way of tracing lineage.

So we could say that Ra- is a bit like the Scottish Mc/Mac or the Irish Ó

Congrats to Ndrian and Koto for fathering half of the national team. They must be really proud of their boys :D

Well I found another article that says the Ra- = blood of is nonsense!

On the subjects of name, 99 percent of native names have a known sense and most surnames, and least in the highlands, begin with either Andria-, "lord", or Ra-, which is a generic prefix for calling people. For example Andrianampoinimerina, the founder of the Merina kingdom means "the lord that lives in the heart of Imerina (the historic name of the kingdom)" and Rabetafika means "He who has a lot of military". Sometimes surnames tell the story of family, and sometimes they're just made up to sound good because historically we don't have a concept of an hereditary name like the Chinese or the Westerners. That system was introduced by the French. By the way some old folks still have a single name all in all. Under the law, the father's name is not automatically passed onto his children. The later can bear their mother's name, the name of another relative, or be given a whole new surname. So being named Andriana* is no longer a mark of noble ancestry.

Anyway, info from Morocco is still somewhat scarce, with the main issue being the continued maladministration of the FRMR, some players apparently refusing call-ups and if I have it right the FRMR are not considering players from the diaspora in France? There is also a call for an audit of the FRMR and replacement of the current officials who are seen as incompetent or even corrupt. Even a couple of days ago the national team captain Abdelatif Boutaty still didn't know if he was even selected!

New mess in Morocco. Nearly all French players won't play the Silver Cup... Open the way for Ivory Coast.

Just checked the ages as per my link (as I have nothing else to do in my life  ) and you can see a number of older fellows in this squad. I mentioned on another thread last year that Madagascar has lost considerable form over the last two years and that an ageing squad could well be the problem. By other ages there is new blood but having a number of players 35yo or 36yo may still be the problem. Madagascar rugby just has not progressed.

Good job!

Final score was Botswana 25 - 58 Côte d’Ivoire

A late rally by Botswana to make it a bit more respectable.

19:19 in the second half, a sure improvement from Botswana, but Cote D'Ivoire definitely took their foot off the accelerator a bit

Very nearly a try for Morocco around the 30 secs played mark but for a knock-on, it was a brilliant move more like we'd expect from les Makis!

Both teams running it all over the place, but Morocco look more powerful and opened the scoring on the 5 minute mark with a try.

And Madagascar score one of their own - this could be a very entertaining game :)

And another for Madagascar quickly afterwards!
