Rugby Commonwealth Games

Postby Neptune » Wed, 11 Apr 2018, 06:43

This is a topic to discuss the commonwealth games.
Apologies in advance, for those people who come from countries not in the commonwealth/ former colonies of the British empire.

Who are the 1. Major contenders
2. Wild Cards
3. Everybody's favourite team
4. Underdogs
5. Surprise teams/major upset teams/ hidden talents

Let's discuss and deliberate. All opinions are welcome. (N.B - NO OPEN BIAS TOWARDS YOUR HOME COUNTRY). :D

On major contenders, I must also add Australia. They will be lethal on home soil.

Given the current sublime form of Fiji right after the devastating performance in HK 7's.. I'd be surprised if they'd be challenged

I know NZ aren't sending the best possible squad and not in great form can't completely rule them out...as underdogs for once! But Fiji are the team on fire and everyone's favourite team I should think.

Would like to see Jamaica manage a big shock.

Pool B and C are the most challenging. Don't know how Zambia qualified ahead of Tonga, Cook Islands and Namibia.

Namibia didn't take part in the Africa Cup 2017 Sevens tournament so missed the chance to qualify, and Zambia were 2nd best placed team taking part eligible for the CWG (would have been Zimbabwe if they hadn't been suspended from the CW).

5. Surprise teams/major upset teams/ hidden talents

1.- South Africa/Fiji (never won Gold and SA defending champions)
2.- NZ and Kenya
3.- Fiji
4.- Uganda
5.- I am putting in either Sri Lanka or Malaysia I want to see a new team to come out of this games and cause a surprise. show the world something from the normal group

Australia and England are major contenders but never won the gold.

Pick game for a shock result:

Pool D: Uganda v Wales, Uganda to win they may be other that is my choice for now.

I also fancy England v Jamaica and PNG v Scotland as possible surprise results.

Yes, Namibia didn't participate and they gave the most useless reason for non - participation, which was lack of funds. I don't know where their money went, but personally what I know is that WR funds only 2 teams in Africa plus additional grants, Namibia and South Africa courtesy of their participation in the RWC so that should not be an excuse.

Is it not possible their money went to funding the Welwitschias in the Currie Cup and International tests, prioritizing XVs and leaving 7s high and dry.

That is a possibility too. If we had a Namibian here, maybe they would be in a better position to tell us.

Even while they've just played last week in full form, Fiji is still sharp as ever, up 12-0 over South Africa at the half.

EDIT: 19 all now, with mere seconds remaining in the game.

EDIT: And now it's going into overtime!

EDIT: Fiji advances!

WR has no say in the format, is similar to the Olympics and the organisers have the final say. same as Hockey, straight shoot out to the Semi Finals, the remaining matches are minor placings

Men Bronze Medal Match
ENG ENG
England
21
RSA RSA
South Africa
14

Gold Medal Event Men Gold Medal Match
NZL NZL
New Zealand
14
FIJ FIJ
Fiji
0

NZ win the Gold MEDAL for the 5th time and Fiji grab the silver for the 3rd time.
