Lithuania absolutely hammering Sweden in their first international game at Telšiai, currently 38 - 5 in the second half. Well on their way to the Conference play-off with Malta for promotion.

Well Sweden came back strongly and put up quite a fight after I made this post! Now 43 - 22 with a few minutes left.

And 43 - 22 confirmed as final score.

What's going on with Swedish rugby? They seem in a complete freefall. Good for Lithuania though. That's an impressive scoreline.

I think it was brought up last year, some sort of dispute involving at least one club and the national union meaning some of the best players haven't been selected for ages.

So kinda like what's happened in Germany this year? That's unfortunate. Looking like we could one day soon see Conference 2 North become the Nordic/Scandinavian Conference.

Would be cool to see Lithuania get a game or two later this year against Poland to help prepare for the RE Trophy. I mean they border each other so would it be that hard? Assuming they get past Malta, whenever that's played.

Should Malta not host by virtue of better pool record?

According to the torunament manual they should, but Rugby Europe showed last year that they don't know their own rules by awarding Georgia the Championship at first

Unless the Lithuania Federation have jumped the gun in announcing it! It's not on the Rugby Europe site yet as far as I can see.

Now also Rugby Europe states the promotion game is Lithuania vs Malta on 19 May 2018. But according to the Tournament manual this cannot be right. One can find the manual here: http://www.rugbyeurope.eu/sites/default/files/document/170908_re_staff_manual_reic_2017-2018.pdf

Point "2 2.1 Promotion/Relegation rules" (p.11) clearly states, that the team with the best overall record hosts. The rugby europe page has Malta with only 19 pts (maybe forgetting the grand slam bonus point as they have 3 TBP already) and Lithuania with 19 points (2 TBP, 1 Grand Slam bonus point). Let's pretend that due to some reason (I couldn't fathom why) both have 19 points, then still Malta should host, according to rule "2.4 Match Points and Determination of Standings", Point "2. Equal number of points at the end of Competition" (p.14 f.).

Here it states:

2. Equal number of points at the end of Competition:
If two or more teams have same number of points the best ranked will be:
• The Union having more number of match points in the games played between the tied Unions
• The Union having best difference between points for and points against in the games played between the tied teams
• The Union having scored more tries in the games played between the tied Unions
• The Union having scored more points in the games played between the tied Unions.
• The Union having best difference between points for and points against in all pool games.
• The Union having scored more tries in all pool games
• The Union having scored more points in all pool games

Points 1-4 are not applicable. Taking points 5-7 and comparing:

Lithuania 4 4-0-0 127:78 +49 18 tries
Malta 4 4-0-0 221:48 +173 35 tries

Malta has the better point differential +178 to +49, has scored more tries 35 to 18 and scored more points 221 to 127. I have no clue why Lithuania should host (though they also have one point less than Malta either way).

edit2: Does anyone know, why Lithuania hosts?

Unless for some reason such as there being no stadium available Malta have a while ago rescinded their right to host the game? There is nothing at all on the Malta site (which is currently suspended) or their Facebook/Twitter accounts about the game.

This seems to be a possible reason, but I could not find anything about forfeiting the hosting rights either. If it is the case and Malta forwarded the hosting rights it does not seem sensible to me, as play-off matches favour the home team quite a lot and Malta already has a bad experience against Czech Republic last year.

I hope Malta avances, they have the largest crowds in the Conference division.
