The resources are always there, especially in the traditional rugby country like Romania.

Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
I am super surprised that there is basically no explicit criticism in the local press for a Uruguayan squad that played WAY below expectations. They are supposed to be one of the first generations born and bred in the High Performance Center at Charrua. They were clearly several steps above what we are used to physically but the decision making was appaling and they crumbled every time things were going their way (yellow cards, very advantageous line-outs, long minutes just a few yards away from the ingoal with no results, etc.
Very curious to hear thoughts on this.

Bogdan, Canada has scored fourteen tries in total in the last two tournament pools and allowed thirty-five. Canada cannot create tries, and their scoring is entirely a result of opponents being penalized or failing to execute in their own ends, giving Canada either shots at goal or set-pieces inside the opponents' 22.

Isn't a bit too soon to have such high expectations?

Uruguay 19-0 Hong Kong, minute 10...
Unfortunately Hong Kong doesn't look to have enough depth and just targetted some games. They are better than this.

Yikes, 36-0 after 27 minutes.
Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
Canada currently rocking Romania. I'm not familiar with these players, but 5, 12, and 14 are all doing very well.
There's a couple things I could complain about, but Canada leading by 40-7 at halftime is pretty rare, so I'm just going to enjoy this.

My congrets to Fiji. They deserved the Trophy.
In my personal opinion the quality of rugby at this trophy was the best among all previous ones.
Rugby is developing throughout the world, not only in particular regions: Portugal, Uruguay, Namibia, Samoa, Canada, Fiji performed well.
I believe the World Rugby should think about extension of U20 WC from 12 to 16 participants.

Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
Agree on extension:
more variety of styles | geographical spread | opportunity to grow
16-team format would be better balanced: 4 *pools of four*
instead of convoluted 12-team SECRET table (which WR never posts!)
where #3 (pool winner with 2-1 record) could have less points then #4
With 16, each team still could play only 5 games:
3 in pool, semi (ie A1-D1 and B1-C1) and final
Comp will fit into SAME time frame - adding just 4 team expenses: +33%
WR should adopt SANZAAR | RE (ORIGINAL FRENCH) points system
to eradicate *kinly help*: we get 5 pts and you 2 pts (eg ARG-ITA this year)
for playing *pseudo-open rugby* with both teams advancing
It should be: either *we prevail 5-0* or *you contain us to 4-1*

Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
The problem is who pays for it. Argentina already pushed forward by a year its tournament and this season we only knew it was going to be France very late.
Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
Agree. For the next WC it is a bit late. However what about 2020 in Italy?
After all lack of money is not a good argument when it comes to popularization of rugby.
If good will is on place, the World Rugby finds the finances.

The 2020 JWC will be in Italy? Or is it just your purpose?
If it will be in Italy I completely missed the news

The bottom team at WC gets throbbed. The defence at Trophy is abysmal. Diluting WC is pointless.

Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
I agree, rather than increase the Championship to 16, increase the Trophy to 12. The addition of the USA, Chile, Spain and Zimbabwe for example would not have reduced the quality of the competition in any way and also we could now have the same format as the Championship which in a small way helps the winning team to prepare for the Championship.

No, you did not miss any official news. This is unofficial info. As far as I know there are (were) negotiations between WR and Italian Rugby Federation on the mentioned issue. Furthermore, I know that the central venue of the WC 2020 could be Treviso.
I would be happy to visit Treviso and other cities nearby.
Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
Thank you BigG. I'm just a bit skeptical about it (the recent JWC edition in Calvisano and Viadana was not such an enormous success as far as I remember) but of course I would be proud of an other JWC in Italy
Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
wow the pools were veeeeery uneven. Maybe not that bad, actually the number of mismatches was smaller this way.

Whoever runs @T2Rugby, I know there's like 5 of you on here needs to chill out on some of your hot takes IMO.

Instead I would suggest a U20 third tier tournament.

@T2Rugby is run by a guy named Beeman, the one who posts the detailed articles on the Tier 2 rugby blogspot. He used to be one here years ago and he's the one with the more aggressive takes.
@Tier2RugbyForum is the twitter account for this forum and is pretty much just a retweet account. But whatever bot they use they end up retweeting spam porn accounts which is pretty annoying. Occasionally there is a gem in there.

I Think a third tier would devalue the regional competitions, as rugby grows maybe in the future a tiered system of junior programs can be looked into but for now I think expanding the 2nd tier to 12 or even 16 teams would be better financially and logistically.

Re: World Rugby U20 Trophy
My proposal would be that teams don't stay in the tier 2 tournament, but they qualify as well.
So the winner of the South American tournament would qualify to the tier 2 tournament, and the runner-up would qualify to the tier 2 tournament.
Therefore, countries like Chile and Brazil can attempt to defeat Uruguay.
