I just don't know what to say. Doesn't feel like either side is fielding their 1st XV. But if I'm going to be watching Portugal play in the 2nd tier again they're going to have to pull something out the hat. No Bettencourt and no Lima is big.

It is a difference, we are trying to field our first XV. Portugal looks like don't even try and i think they are missing a good chance here.

This is a very hard thing to say but I feel like with Portugal at the moment they can always turn around and say "well you know we were missing people, there were injuries and availability issues etc etc"

You can only be the plucky underdog for so long. At some point you have to start positioning yourself to actually win games and move forward. Portugal aren't there.

Is FPR led by somebody at the moment? You can't ask a union for miracles if there isn't a leader with ability to take decisions, negotiate with French clubs, etc...

currently no defined leader i believe? elections will come early in the new year.

this fixture could have taken Portugal back to a platform to realistically build on. I just don't get it. Jose Rodrigues not featuring is odd as well. I bet they all become available for Namibia.

Well... Romania managed to get their French based players, it´s ridiculous that Portugal doesn´t aim to do the same, the article above leaves out a few other qualified french-portuguese players that could be called up for such a huge event.

To think Portugal has a chance in their current form is pretty wild. But in fairness, I don´t know how much more a chance they would have with a complete roster..

So how many more points were Romania deducted for fielding an ineligible player than Belgium to end up in this play-off?

Well this fixture is already going as expected, with Romania 3 tries to the good (17-3 with 21minutes gone)

Also, there was a shot of the crowd after the third try, and some spectators were wearing what I can only describe as a dish plate. Anyone able to tell me what it symbolises (if they recognised what it was they were wearing)?

That's the traditional hat in the area (you'd better not call it that when they are able to hear you :D). I think amz used to have one on his avatar.

Gotcha.

Portugal are suprisingly (despite the scoreline) putting up a fight in some areas (namely the lineout)

Yes, and their scrum was ok (-ish), I thought they'd be pushed all over the field. But they were also lucky there's no TMO.

I'm just scrolling back watching some of the first half. Definitely putting up more of a fight than I thought they would. I guess this show hows competitive rugby is becoming across the tiers, which is good.

Nah, I wouldn't be so optimistic. Portugal had always been sort of kryptonite for Romania and Georgia, even in their worse ENC/REC years they managed to offer some close games. This isn't anywhere close after training for three weeks together and playing a training game with Germany. Of course, they weren't favourites by any means, but I fear Portugal may never be back again in REC.

Ooof, so close to a superb second try for Portugal there (64 mins in) but a kick which didn't go to hand quite as expected stop it.
