2019 Tests/ RWC warm ups

Postby nick511 » Sun, 25 Nov 2018, 02:03

I noticed their wasn't a topic for next years tests and rwc warm ups, already quite a few involving tier 2 are confirmed with many rumors I've seen on the Wikipedia page. I just saw today the confirmation of the NZ vs Tonga game and one other is rumored but not confirmed in NZ.

So far rwc warm ups confirmed involving tier 2 are:

Italy vs Russia
Uruguay vs Namibia x2
Georgia vs Scotland x2
NZ vs Tonga

are there any more to add?

Rumours Wallabies might be playing either Tonga or Samoa. No confirmation though.

Uruguay would play Namibia twice and South America XV once.

If this is true, I kind of hoping every nation will play everyone like the 6 nations. If not however wouldn't it be smart to play the games in Japan? I mean all the teams can get used to playing in Japan before the world cup since all the proposed nations will be competing there.

These teams should be in the PNC every year as they are mostly all around the same ranking and is a perfect competition for them to test their merit. But very happy to see it coming back next year as a RWC warmup.

How many games do teams usually play as a warmup and from when to when?

It's correct IRT to the USA and Japan joining. Had no idea it included Canada, but this was one of the reasons why the ARC wasn't moving until after the World Cup. However, if we play in the PNC every year again it would replace the ARC as a Test Tournament for us. Which would make the ARC moving kind of dumb.

Five or Six, we played six last cycle as Warmups 4 in the PNC and 2 after (CAN and Aus).

WOW, Scotland plans to play 4 games in 3 weeks. Notably, they have chosen Georgia and France: both very physical teams. How thoughtful is that decision? What I mean is that at group stage Scotland plays with Japan, team which loves tempo game.

So basically Six Nations in February and then Six Nations in August/September (plus Georgia and Russia). The Georgia game is the last one so probably a test for depth.

It's not even like they have the depth to cover any injuries sustained. If it were Eng/NZ I'd understand, but Scotland are only ever 4 injuries away from falling apart.

ARN believes that the PNC will be split up into two groups - Fiji, Tonga and Samoa in one and USA, Canada and Japan in the other. Teams will play the 3 nations in the other group, so Fiji vs USA, Canada, Japan.

That's actually close to the format that was used before the previous RWC back in 2015. Also a Pacific Nations Cup with those six teams...

Any news on which teams Fiji, Samoa and Tonga are playing as warm-ups? Looks like the bigger nations are getting decent buildups

The issue of player insurance has resurfaced, the article is aimed primarily to Premiership players but I do wonder how this affects T2 Players. A subject that hasn't been raised in great detail.

Prior to the Trophy competition starting back up, Switzerland will (as they did the year previous) host to Cote D'Ivoire on February 24th.
