16th March: Czechia - Netherlands RET

Postby Silver Fox » Fri, 15 Mar 2019, 14:36

Date: 16 March 2019
Kick-off: 14:00 CET
Venue Prague.

The Dutch are heavy favorites but do need to secure a bonupoint to keep their hopes of finishing in first spot alive.
Just in case the Portuguese slip up against the Switzerland.

Apparently there is no need to keep the selection hidden and it shows on the Dutch union's website:
(Truth be told they were probably too busy organizing the matchday last week to publish the selection)

Are they still persisting with that whole ‘Czechia’ thing? It’s never going to catch on, lol.

Czechia works fine for me. Better than having to say "The Czech Republic" all the time. Nobody talks about "The French Republic" or "The Federal Republic of Germany" except in seriously official things, so why not?

I hope we play well throughout the whole game. Against Switzerland we had a very bad period.
If numbers 1 to 15 is the starting team I look forward to the new combination of 9, 10, 12 and 13. Last years we used to play with a 12 who is also a passer/ playmaker. Greeve and Koster more seem like centers who enjoy the fysical battle at the gain line. Greeve pleased me on his debut last week. Koster was unlucky against the Swiss. Hopefully Jasey van Kampen can show some more of his talent this time.

The Dutch without the Darlington brothers in the front row this time. I wonder how that will work. We still need more Dutch front rowers coming up through the ranks.

FT 22-24. I think we were a little lucky to sneak a win. The Dutch replacement kicker scored a conversion with the last kick of the game.

Pffffft sneaky indeed.
I don't think we deserved the win.

To me it looked like, after last weeks loss, we played as if the season was already over.
Very stop go, jogging from set piece to set piece, and with little accuracy.
Lots of unforced errors. Not once did I see a quick penalty for example, trying to take the Czech by surprise.
Maybe that's for the best because most likely if someone had tried something unexpected he would have found himself without support.

Well, the last 10 minutes we played with a lot more intent and urgency to get that winning try.
But as a fan I would like to see that the full 80 minutes.

HT: 8-17
Interesting detail: After scoring the Dutch second try in the last play of the first half young Dutch centre Quinten Koster got red carded.
I couldn't see why because the lign of sight to that corner was blocked for the camera but he probably retaliated after a Czech defender dived on him after his score.

But credits to the Czechs, they played with heart.
Sorry we broke it.

Oranje started to get some rythm in the attacks at the end of the first half and that resulted in a fine second try. Then the red card and the (a bit remarkable?) decision to stick to 8 forwards, from which the Czech backline took advantage, and two tries for them. Keeping a full pack payed off later in the game.
The new backline has to get used to eachother. It seems Sep Visser and Josh Gascoigne struggle a bit and play better with players around them that they know and trust. When their Hilversum teammate good old Storm Caroll came in at the end of the game they found their mojo back.
I agree we looked a bit slow and lumpish. We have to execute the basics better and faster to improve (that is why I like the Portuguese game so much).
Good to see the substitutes did well and that we refused to loose.

Hah. I didn't notice that. I lost connection the last couple of minutes of the first half. I didn't realise we played the second half with fourteen men.
