Rugby Museums and expositions

Postby victorsra » Sat, 04 Jan 2020, 16:29

Today is the opening of the exposition "Vale do Rugby" at SESC, the main cultural centre in São José dos Campos, with photos and historical objects of the history of Brazilian rugby, with special focus on the Vale do Paraiba region (São José dos Campos and Jacarei cities). A debate about our rugby and workshops for kids are also in the schedule, as well a small movies festival and a rugby challenge with local clubs. We don't have a rugby museum in Brazil and sports museums don't have rugby objects here, so this is special for us. That's the second rugby history exposition. The first one was in São Paulo in 2016. i'm the curator of both :)

This is one side of the main room, but it is a bit bigger than what you see in the photo. There's also 3 short movies about local rugby's history and values and a corridor with photos and the sounds of two rugby matches (and imersive experience  )

Well, i've visited Twickenham's museum, of course: http://www.worldrugbymuseum.com/

And the town of Rugby has the Hall of Fame: https://www.world.rugby/halloffame/

Where else there are museums about rugby?

In Italy there's the "Museo del Fango" ("Mud Museum") in an ancient village near Rome

In Japan there's a rugby museum in the Hanazono stadium, the oldest rugby stadium in the nation

I don't think it counts as a museum, but there is a collection of Dutch rugby memorabilia at the National Rugby Centre in Amsterdam. It was essentially the private collection of Leo van Herwijnen, one of the founders of FIRA back in the day, but he has handed it over to a foundation which he set up. Apparently you need to ask for an appointment to view it (I've never done this). Most of the website is in Dutch, but the following page is in English: http://www.lvhrugbyfoundation.com/the-foundation.html
