What's particularly interesting is that it says they report the GM of men's 15s program as well as director of high performance rugby. So may be another position being filled?

Also it's worth checking the old listing to see if it also said must reside full time in the US. May just be boilerplate

It seems unlikely but he's made good money in the NFL (not as good as stars, mind you) and the money would still presumably be a decent living at Northampton. Also could add a ridiculous resume to his career: Super Bowl Champion, Olympian and played in a RWC.

How much would be earning with NEP? He would circa $500k pa in the Aviva. Surely the two won't compare favourably?

He's earning $1.2MM right now. Belichick tends not to keep dudes in the last year of their contract so expect an extension and a bump.

This year and last year he got about $1.2 mil but before that was probably on .5 to .8 mil most years since he was still on his rookie contract. His problem is he is still a pure special teams player. Clearly Belichick likes his work ethic and attitude since a lot of teams wouldnt even consider paying 1.2 mil for a guy that is not even their star special team player. But thats a difference with new england. Matthew Slater is the star special teams guy and gets about $2 mil a year.

Remember these guys are playing about 5-10% of all plays in the game. Punts, Kick offs, Kick off returns and punt returns.

As much as they clearly like Ebner special team roles are somewhat replaceable and they will draft and poach guys from other teams that are still on rookie contracts that can fill the role. Some of those guys are pure special teams players others are position players that could develop more so its a way to keep them utilised while they develop.

The point is that special teams is a young mans game and as much as Belichick might like Ebner he will get replaced by a newer cheaper player at some point. if not this year, next year or the year after.

I seriously doubt he would get signed to $500k in Aviva with no proven rugby track record beyond Olympic 7s. Anyone know what Axel Mueller got from Toulon? That might be a reasonable comparison. And fun fact, Axel Mueller could be representing the US...he grew up in Arizona and was a HS track star.

Slater is entering his 10th season, Ebner is entering his 6th. Suffice it to say I think Ebner has 3-5 years left. He has seen the field on defense in a few games but isn't truly on the defensive depth chart. Although looking at the rumors thread for Northampton he'd be a small No 8. He's more of Center-Wing. But still that puts him at 32ish leaving the NFL and if MLR is pumping I'm sure he would be considered a "marquee" signing.

You make a great point here. As a special teams play his salary is rather high and I don't think he has the skills to be a starting SS or FS with any NFL team. He knows the Pats system & can fill in on D when needed, and with one year remaining on his contract, this will be the last year with the Pats (and probably in the NFL).
I'd love to see his CV show Super Bowl, Olympics and RWC, but $500K for an un proven 15's player? Your assessment is spot on.

Spain isn't expected to play three test matches unless a miracle happens.

South African provincial sides heading to US?

Four South African teams could play in the Anglo-Welsh Cup and another two in an American competition.

I'm afraid to even suggest that it could be some sort of "PRO" Rugby collaboration .....

The relevant section from the original Netwerk 24 article:
"Onderhandelinge om twee Suid-Afrikaanse spanne in ’n Amerikaanse reeks te laat speel, vind ook agter die skerms plaas. Dis onseker watter plaaslike spanne dit sal wees."

Google's effort at translating this:
"Negotiations to play two South African teams in an American series also take place behind the scenes. It's unclear what local teams it will be."

So there isn't anything more substantial in the original article. My best guess is that this is something PRO is planning so they can say they did something with the sanction this year. Any other scenario seems like it would be more temporary, such as a series of friendlies against teams from MLR (this fall, when teams are ramping up towards the inaugural spring season) or Super 7s (next fall during their planned exhibition series).
