To be in one group and play against other teams in other group, is imho and with all due respect the most stupid and fan-unfriendly format one can ever think of.
I actually don't understand where the problem with 4 of 6 3rd advancing? I think it is a great and exciting format and if one plays through some scenarios you will find out that those 4 teams will be from the most competitivw groups. Especially in rugby where you might use some bonus points.
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

France is going to deliver them the most money, so I can't really say it's the wrong decision. Ireland just didn't have the infrastructure to compete, it always seemed like a pipe dream. Still hoping expansion might happen, if any nation can cope with four extra teams and fans its France.

Now it's time to see if France complies with its commitments with Rugby Europe, Georgia and Romania.

ihateblazers wrote:Here are my guesses for the way voting would go down. Just a bit of fun playing on the politics of it all.

World Rugby Council

Six Nations:
Wales 3 votes - Ireland (Celtic bloc)
Scotland 3 votes - Ireland (Celtic bloc)
England 3 votes - France (better relationship with FFR than IRFU?)
Italy 3 votes - France (if Milan is rewarded as a host city)

Rugby Championship:
Australia 3 votes - South Africa (to get South Africa 2027 vote)
Argentina 3 votes - South Africa (to get South Africa 2027 vote)
New Zealand 3 votes
- France (no chance of getting a RWC any time soon, might as well vote for one with most revenue?)
- Ireland (small nation like itself, could give browney points for future?)
- South Africa (stick with SANZAAR alliance)

Regional Councils:
Africa 2 votes South Africa (obvious)
Asia 2 votes South Africa (SANZAAR?)
Europe 2 votes - France (France better for T2/T3 Europe)
North America 2 votes France (USA/Canada influence)
South America 2 votes South Africa (Argentina influence)
Oceania 2 votes South Africa (SANZAAR influence)

T2 Members:
Georgia 1 vote - France
Romania 1 vote - France
Canada 1 vote - France (to get French 2027 vote)
USA 1 vote - France (to get French 2027 vote)
Japan 1 vote - South Africa (wants to be a part of SANZAAR)

Executives
Chairman - ?
Vice Chairman - ?
CEO - ?

17 votes for France
15 votes for South Africa
6 votes for Ireland

You should have put some money on this.

What to deliver? Can France deliver?

I am glad is not SA. Don't get me wrong, I have huge respect for them and my first WC completley watched on TV was 95 one but I did want rugby come back in Europe and I prefered Ireland because is a safer country than France.

good for France....now I hope that some of the host cities are bastions of rugby (clermont, toulon, perpignan better than st ettiene, lens)

My best guess:

Ireland (8):
England 3
Scotland 3
RAN 2

SA (13):
Aus (3)
NZ (3)
Rugby Arfique (2)
Arg (3)
Rugby Sudamerica (2)

France (18):
Italy (3)
RE (2)
Geo (1)
Rom (1)
Can (1)
USA (1)
Oceania (2)
Asia (2)
JPN (1)
....

No wait that only adds up if Chairman, VC and CEO all vote for France !!!

Thinking about it ....

I reckon NZ split from SA. Visa troubles plus France playing two NZ sides this weekend which were 1) dead good events and 2) money raisers for NZ??

Australia won't be bidding for the 2027 world cup so I doubt a vote to SA would have been for that reason. I'm kinda doubtful England voted for Ireland. It is interesting to think though that the T2/T3 nation votes could have decided the outcome.

My new maths on this:

SA (13): NZL(3),AUS(3) Rugby Arfique (2) ARG (3) Rugby Sudamerica (2)

IRE (8): ENG(3), SCO(3), Rugby America North (2)

FRA (18): WAL (3), ITA (3), RE (2), GEO (1), Rom (1), Can (1), USA (1), JPN (2), Oceania (2), Asia (2)

Looks like the T2 nations swung it for France. Great to see the power dynamic in the game change if true

BTW: England announced before the vote they were going with Ireland in the 1st round and France if Ireland were eliminated, it was in our papers today.

Why would Rugby North America vote differently as USA and Canada?

Also, it would be strange that Oceania would vote for France, don't you think?

I think Japan voted for SA. They owe their team's presence in SR to SA

The vote proved Irish bid was a complete absurdity. A small nation won't never host RWC again. I'm really happy with this humiliation of Ireland. They deserve it so much. NZ 2011 was a total financial disaster comparing to England 2015.

Now, the way is open for USA 2027.

Ireland made a mistake not to make a joint bid with Scotland (maybe Wales as well). Small nations have a chance when they act together.

Argentina will bid for 2027.

I think WR turned a page. New Zealand was the last small nation to host the RWC. I remember in 2011 they said it was like their "last chance before the RWC becomes something really big". Ireland proved now. They will need joint bids in the futures probably. But I was cheering for Ireland. In Brexit times it would be interesting a competition hosted by both sides of the island. It would have been a powerful message.

Not true. Pichot said recently that we are already out of it.
