Basically the whole US team is from the state of Minnesota. Must be the Scandinavian link.
Also, Minnesota has the only full-size Bandy rink in the entire country and is an ice hockey stronghold. The US Bandy guys work hard with very limited resources, their win over Norway was well-deserved.

Re: Russian Rugby
Why are Russia getting such poor crowds?
I appreciate that rugby is not the number 1 sport (or perhaps in the top 5) but the Russian national team in a competitive game in a global sport, in a big stadium in a big city, should surely be getting 10,000 or so?
What is the problem? Bad marketing? Expensive tickets? Does Rugby have no profile? Dreadful weather?
I don’t expect Russia to get 80,000 in Lushniki, but a few thousand in Krasnodar seems very poor to me.

In Moscow tonight - 17C and rugby is not included in my opinion and in the top 30.
Tickets are cheap - $ 1.5

Re: Russian Rugby
This will be the first home match of the Russian national team under Artemyev. Let's see how it goes. But he said that the Russian team will play in the new stadiums that were built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Re: Russian Rugby
Does seem strange for a country renowned for it's tough patriotism to show such little support.
The Russian national team deserves more support.

The main trends of (post)modern Russian patriotism are decided by The President.
When it comes to support, again it is decided by the President.

Yes, spectators will come to the stadium if Putin orders.
Immediately seen a specialist in Russia.

Re: Russian Rugby
If the rugby federation had positioned the Russian national rugby team as patriots, then there would be an effect. But they always used a set of stamps when they talked about rugby in Russia like "English game", "game of gentlemen", "Queen of England". This is not popular among Russians. Englishmen (Anglo-Saxons) for a simple Russian people are roughly like a "communist" for an American in the days of the Cold War. But the rugby officials live in Moscow, fly to London to drink beer. Therefore, they do not understand common people . I hope Artemiev will change this situation.
Re: Russian Rugby
Indicative moment. Because of Hollywood, 99% of ordinary citizens of Russia do not understand the difference between American Football and rugby or think that this is one kind of sport, but different names. When rugby officials are asked to tv or radio, so they explain the difference. They always says "rugby is an English game". A curtain. Not only that in Russia those who engage in American football in the eyes of an ordinary citizen are traitors and liberals (anti-Putin). They are told that rugby is an English game, not an American one... Americans and Englishmens are Anglo-Saxons. Therefore, there is no difference. Got the essence? It's about like in US to advertise some kind of sport and say that it was invented in Iran or North Korea.
Re: Russian Rugby
By the way now in russia is practiced rugby like folk game - kila.
There is even a Federation of kila of Russia.
http://kila-igra.ru/
But the audience is even less than rugby))

Re: Russian Rugby
Almost all popular games in Russia came to Russia from England and its former colonies ...

Re: Russian Rugby
Russian Hockey (Bandy) is our national sport from old centuries. Instead of associating rugby with England, it would be better to do like the Georgians. They says rugby comes from Lelo. Our officials need say that rugby came from Kila. This is a completely different concept. If a TV or radio is asked to tell the difference between American football rugby, then we can safely say that rugby is a Russian game. Then people will have a completely different attitude to rugby.
If you reasonably say that rugby is our game, then you can popularize rugby from a higher level of management. These liberal rugby Moscow officials do not understand simple things.

You will be surprised, but Bendi is also England ...

Re: Russian Rugby
Russian hockey has developed in many countries in parallel. In Russia, the oldest elements are found in Novgorod (13th century), in the annals the first data from the 10th century, in Russian literature there is a description of this sport. In different regions it was called differently. But the unite rules of the Russian Hockey were decorated in the late 19th century in St. Petersburg. Even the word "bandy" for fans of Russian hockey is a swear word.
The names of Russian hockey in different regions of Russia up to the 19th century: the "zagon" in the North, the "pogonya" on Vyatka, the "svinka" in the Urals, as well as "Klyushkovanie", "sharenie", "kotel", "dogon", "yula" and others.

Re: Russian Rugby
Undoubtedly! In the whole world there were games with a ball or with a stick!
But in England in the late 18 century game rules and sports clubs were created.

So the problem is your Rugby Union officials don't lie?
Rugby is a global sport invented in England. Lelo was known to the world when...90s? Indians, Aborigens can also claim they have some sort of game similar to rugby yet what we all played started in England.
Re: Russian Rugby
Of course Bandy, despite being a Russian sport has nowhere near as much popularity in Russia as hockey or basketball - both very North American sports.

Re: Russian Rugby
Why not just be honest about ware rugby came from but place more importance on what the sport can teach you? Toughness, respect, team building, athleticism, pride, qualities that all countries want in their citizens.
Re: Russian Rugby
We must admit that the Georgians could make rugby popular at the expense of two things:
1. Confrontation with Russia.
2. Historical justification that rugby is a Georgian game (Lelo).
Compare this to Georgian basketball. There are also high-level players in the NBA and other leagues, but everyone understands that this is an American game, not a Georgian, and there is no confrontation with the enemy.
If in Russian rugby there was a confrontation with our historic enemy England/USA and the rationale that rugby is a Russian game, then I assure you that there would be full stadiums on the games of the Russian national team.
Remember how ice hockey became popular in the USSR. On the confrontation with Canada (West).

I second everything you wrote. Imho this can be used for a lot of countries. If England would have played Germany in Rugby would be way bigger in Germany.
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

In 1916, in the Russian description of the rules of the rugby, a term was used from the kila.
Dupperon Georgy Alexandrovich, composing in 1916 the first Russian translation of rugby rules into Russian, used the term, common in the kila.
Today, the resultant action in rugby is called "popytka" (try).
But in 1916, when Duperron translated rugby rules into Russian, the resultative effect of "try" he called, probably, the usual term for Russians, "TAKING THE CITY"!
(Duperron GA II: Football and friend of the game of the same type.C.31-34 Petrograd, 1916)
In the kila, the term "city is taken" is found in the work of N. Pomyalovsky, "Essays on the bursa" (1862), and also in the monograph of Doctor of Historical Sciences Gorbunov B. V. "The Military Competitive and Playful Tradition in the Russian Folk Culture" (1999)
Duperron Georgy Alexandrovich - the founder of football and rugby in Russia, judge, sports journalist, teacher, professor. His mother is a German, Louisa Maria Fedorovna Rose. Fatheris a French, Alexander Anton Viktorovich Duperron.
