Much more sad: Fili Фили has been disbanded for good (BAD)
This amounts to closure of Liverpool (FA) | Montreal Canadiens (NHL)

So they are down Kulemin (retirement), Ostrikov, Ostroushko, Simplikevich, the Tsnobiladze brothers and a few other guys who were regular starters in recent years. Who knows why they're missing, but they're gonna be tough shoes for Russia to fill.

I guess Ostrikov wasn't released by Sale?
Ostroushko will play only for Russia Sevens this year
Simplikevich (like Pronenko) is injured and will not play for Enisey against CDUL.
Not sure about Tsnobiladze brothers...
The captain Voytov is also missing

Are they doing that now? Just calling in players for trial games? Good for him I guess but it sucks if it means he misses a match for Russia

2013 champions Krasny Yar lost most of their best players, props Maxim Cobilas (signed to Sale Sharks), Mamuka Khechikovi (signed to Aia Kutaisi, Georgia), hooker Nazir Gasanov (joined the rival Enisey-STM), lock Andrei Romanov (rumoured to play for CSM Bucharest this season) and their 4 NZ players, John Dodd, Scott Cowan, Glen Horton and Craig Claire (the last 3 are former Super Rugby players). The team will sign Tongan players, especially because they accept salaries in rubles (NZ players were paid in dollars and because of the fall of the ruble, the players returned too expensive).

So what is the view of the loss against Spain? Was it expected or is it a shock? Were Russia missing any players?

Crimean teams incorporated into Russian second division. Feodosiya were formerly in the Ukrainian Superliga... http://rprl.ru/news/prl-news/15922

Contentious issue to say the least.

How so?
Both Ukraine and the West are accepting Russia's annexation of Crimea.

Not really. De facto yes, but not de jure.

And Fifa has basically forbidden the participation of Crimean teams in the Russian championsship.

Clubs from the Crimea ( "The Sea" Theodosius and CIPU Simferopol) last season also played in the second division of the Russian rugby. Rugby Federation Russian carefully concealed this fact

I assume you meant to reply to iul.

FIBA (basketball) is also experiencing controversy over Crimean clubs.

I think we have to be very careful on a sports forum not to get to political. So far everyone has been ok, but it could easily escalate. I have my views about Russia, Ukraine and Crimea but I wont let them affect what I say here. Obviously the fact that Crimean clubs are playing in Russian leagues has an affect on rugby, not just politics so it is reasonable to talk about it - but with caution.

is that a first choice XV? Is there anyone missing or not released?

What happened to that Australian lock who played for Russia in the last world cup, does he ever play for them anymore?

Teams playing in a rugby competion outside their countries is not something new. We have RC Luxemburg in Germany, not long ago we discussed the Swiss club wanting to join the French league system, we're speculating about a Moldovan team in Romanian Superliga etc.

The Russian Super Cup will be played in Makhachkala, Dagestan. This is part of an initiative to promote rugby in the North Caucasus, and will mark the first time rugby of any significance has been played in the region, which is noted for producing world class wrestlers.

It takes place May 9 (Victory Day) at Dynamo Stadium. Last year's winners Yenisei-STM face Slava-CSP.

Harlequins 'A' to play midweek friendly against Krasny Yar in London, April 15: http://www.quins.co.uk/news/harlequins- ... rasny-yar/

Edit: looks like they actually have a reasonable tour planned: Russia's @Yar_rugby to play @Bristol_RFC United (6/4), @WorcsWarriors (11/4), @QuinsRugbyUnion A (15/4), @SaleSharksRugby Jets (20/4)
