Vova, I went to that game and supported Russia (No I didnot dress up!) which made some Aussie fans very angry (and I wasn't even saying rude things about Australia, just chanting for Russia). I was sitting at the top seat on the temporary stand. One guy threatened to throw me over the back of the stand and break my neck, and he wasn't joking! I had to counter threaten that I would call security and they would be chucked out of the game. I was very angry at some foreigner telling me in my own country who I should support and who I shouldn't!

It was necessary to say that you are from Russkaya mafia ...

Lyn Jones to be new Russian Head Coach.
Was Kingsley not available or something?

Harsh, Lyn Jones has a decent record at club level. Coaching at this level is a different challenge but he's not a bad bet, for me at least.

Yes Lyn is a good coach, I think that his philosophy will suit Russia's style of play as well. Hopefully he takes it more seriously than Kinglsey did. If Kinglsey was part of the process though then no doubt he will have told Lyn what he can get away with logistically.

Yeah also London Welsh (almost kept them up), but most famously the Ospreys during the star player era with Henson, Shane Williams etc.

Have the Russian teams advertised more with the World Cup going on? Have there been more fans st the games due to the mass amount of people in Russia? Or has it made no difference at all?

Apparently, there's some event or other going on some time right around now which is of slightly more pressing interest to the nation...

I was on the lookout on the TV crowd scenes for anyone wearing the marvellous Argentina Rugby shirt, but then again, you don't get a cross mixing of football/rugby fans much. I don't know anyone who goes to both Rugby and football matches, though I know people who have switched from football goers to rugby.

It's quite obvious what Russians need to do to increase Rugby interest ... win a few matches at RWC.

I had been given the impression that, much like the French prior to 1998, they don't really love football/sport like others do, but love winners. If the success of the football team can be repeated on the rugby pitch then we might see the game advance. I'm not sure how much latent love of rugby there is ... even with football the Russians themselves say they are fair-weather.

Before championship of football players Russia called " lazy people receiving huge undeserved money".
After some time they will be called again.
But nevertheles football in Russia is most popular sport.

I can tell you that today out of tens of millions of "fans", only a small percentage are really football fans. They support their clubs in the Russian championship. Maybe 10-20%. The remaining 80-90% is the work of a state machine. When on the radio, TV, from every iron wa talking FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, even the housewives begin to watch football.
I would divide these glorhanters into two large groups. The first look because of patriotism, and the latter look to have a reason to drink beer or vodka. They do not belong to football and do not play football. Put rugby and it will be the same.

So is Ice Hockey as popular as football? Or the vast majority of Russians simply don't care of professional sports in their daily lives?

Another question: what about Bandy, how much popular is it?
