Nice to have foreign rivals.

But it's an odd format for a South American qualifier.

This is really bad, because there are 5 South American teams that are playing for the RWC7s and HK7s that will have different opponents.

The best format would be a Saturday with South Americans vs South Americans and a Sunday with everybody together.

Exemple:

4 groups of 3 instead of 3 groups of 4!

Swap Germany or Ireland for Peru. Than have 2 groups with 3 South Americans (except Argentina) each. And 2 groups with Argentina + 5 invitees.

On Saturday everybody plays 2 group matches - and the South Americans a 3rd match, the Qualy Final/3rd place/5th place.

Sunday with quarter finals, semifinals and finals.

Judging by last year's tournaments, all the non-South American teams will send B teams.

Last year, Fiji, USA and Canada sent their B teams, as did Argentina.

Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay were the only countries playing with their A teams. In both tournaments, only 1 of the A teams (Chile) made the semi-finals.

Hmm... I don't see Cook Islands on the Pacific Mini Games schedule, although they were 6th in the Oceania Sevens. I guess it's safe to say they're out of the running?

And on the off-chance that Wallis and Futuna actually places highest... what would this mean for them?

In other news, looks like there's a consideration of a franchise-based sevens series proposal. https://www.thenational.ae/sport/rugby/ ... s-1.680323

That leaked Sevens World Cup format from a few months back is official. A team needs only to win four games to win the tournament and over half the teams are going to be eliminated after the first round. This is absurd.

I can't understand if you are right or no. It's bad that a team knows to be eliminated just after one match of 14 minutes but I think that sometime the pool games are a bit boring because there's no pressure of elimination and because more or less you already know who will qualify. Tennis uses always a knock-out format.
A strange thing is that they chose this new format like they wanted to have less games, but at least according to wikipedia after the elimination there will be all the placement matches, with quarters, semifinals and finals for every position, even the 23rd

Meanwhile, in Dubai there's also a side tournament with Ireland, Germany, Germany development, Georgia, Zambia, Canada Development, SA Academy, France Development

I am one of the few that REALLY liked the RWC7s system. I understand why World Rugby opted for a knockout-only competition:

1 - More matches mean they would need a second stadium very close to the main venue and they don't have it (Moscow had it, for exemple, with half womens matches in a smaller stadium close to the Luzhniki);

2 - A tournament with pools is almost the same thing of a Sevens Series tournament, but with a couple of more teams. For the major teams (that have most of the fans and media) it would be more of the same, a nothing-special competition.

3 - With the Olympics and the Sevens Series, the RWC7s needs to be unique. They needed a NEW format to make it a different thing. And with the impossibilty of more stadiums or matchdays, here you are, "zero mistakes" unpredictable knockout.

I was very much against the system,
BUT: if you really have all the teams play on, until every position is played out, that's fair enough.

But it is unfair, that teams seeded 9-24th have an additional game. Compared to seeds 1-8. They should have sorted that out by having an additional player in their tournament squad (still the some number of nominated players per game) or the possibility to nominate another player if a player is injured in the qualification game.
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

I am a bit concerned about the promotion of the competition worldwide. It will be in the week after the Fifa World Cup final. It is good to avoid the WC dates, but with the kickoff on Friday rugby will have just 4 days after the biggest event in the world sport to promote it in common media. Less, because WC's hangover dominates the Monday too.

Yeah but don't forget USA didn't qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and Americans aren't exactly the biggest football fans in the world, so I don't think that's going to be an issue.

Hmm... I did see there were some individual replays of that day, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

Anyways, it was a pretty sad display by USA. I mean Perry Baker got injured very early on, but not a single win in Dubai? To be fair, Samoa seemed to have caught everyone off-guard, finishing sixth. But committing several costly mistakes in a close match against Canada then take too long to surge back against Wales? Happy for Uganda's showing; they've been pretty scrappy from what I've seen in most of their matches.
