Last year they took half of their WS squad to Punta 7s. They only go full development in Viña del Mar.

How does the points work for the World Cup qualification? Is there a general classification or they count just a ranking between the five south american teams?

AFAIK Sudamérica Rugby provided no information about this. Which is basic...

Yeah, looks like Chile and Uruguay will be the favorites to qualify from here. Should Chile succeed, it will be their second World Cup ever, and their first since 2001.

Hello, I saw all but the early 3-4 matches in both days.
I can't say that I paid too much attention, or that I know much about rugby.

The first day, South Africa was unimpressive, showing nothing of interest.
I missed IRE-ARG, but apparently the Europeans dominated.
However, South Africa crushed Ireland on Sunday and didn't stop.

Argentina played very poorly. They obviously don't have a proper sevens development program.
I wouldn't be surprised if these player picked the shortest straw or something.

Chile was obviously the second best team in the tournament.
I can't say that they played beautifully or strongly, but they had no weak spots.
Uruguay was irregular. We lost to both Brazil and Chile by little margin, but defeated France and Argentina when we needed it most.
Chile is one step and a half above us, and Brazil is almost on the same level. We can win or lose to either.

Colombia was impressive, but got bad luck with the group seeding.
They lost to Argentina by 2 points, and didn't get a chance to play Uruguay or Brazil.

United States and Canada played horribly. On the grandstands we commented that they obviously hadn't brought Perry Baker.

Paraguay had one or two nice plays, but they were definitely last.
They didn't make long passes, like if they had forgotten this was sevens instead of XV.

Germany had strong and fast players, but lacked gameplay.

Canada filled a team with relatively inexperienced youth and a handful of potential Canadian Football converts. This was always going to be a rough go for them with the aim being getting players experience and to see how they perform in a quality 7s tournament.

Thanks for the report. Frustrating with no video anywhere.

To be fair, the timing of these tournaments is bad (and shows how much more depth countries like South Africa have for 7s). US just started a high performance camp for the next 7 series. So that means probably their best 20-25 players are not available for this tour since they need to be in camp. This is likely guys outside even the bubble. Or at least guys that may be on the bubble but really need more high level match experience.

If the tournament was just during or just after a leg of the WS, the US squad would be much stronger.

China are an invited side at the Marist Sevens this year

The 30th Marist International Sevens will experience yet another first this year. A team from China is set to participate in the tournament scheduled for the 16-17 February 2018.
According to a statement from the Club, a delegation from the China Rugby Union is in Samoa under close cooperation with the Samoa Rugby Union on a fact finding mission to assess opportunities where both countries can fully explore and assist each other in the development of rugby.

Brazil got a tough group.

Uruguay will play France and United States again, and will also play Colombia (for the first time?)

From the photos it seems a decent good crown in Vina del Mar. Several hundreds people, I'd say vaguely

May you remember us the quarterfinals? I think to have read that one of them will be Uruguay v Brazil

Day 1 results:

Brazil 14-14 Ireland
South Africa 'B' 29-0 Paraguay
Uruguay 17-14 Colombia
France 'B' 33-7 USA 'B'
Germany 24-12 Argentina 'B'
Chile 38-0 Canada 'B'
Brazil 29-21 Paraguay
Ireland 17-7 South Africa 'B'
Uruguay 17-12 USA 'B'
France 'B' 17-7 Colombia
Germany 17-12 Canada 'B'
Chile 17-15 Argentina 'B'
Ireland 43-0 Paraguay
Brazil 14-14 South Africa 'B'
USA 'B' 28-17 Colombia
Uruguay 17-14 France 'B'
Argentina 'B' 31-12 Canada 'B'
Chile 19-22 Germany

Rugby Sudamerica tweeting wrong results (AGAIN!). Whoever is responsible for their results publishing should be fired. Every time there is a 7s tournament they get at least 1 result wrong, and usually it's more than 1.

They tweeted Ireland 43-12 (instead of 43-0) and Chile 17-22 Germany (instead of 19-22).

Tomorrow's fixtures:
9-12 USA 'B' - Paraguay
9-12 Canada 'B' - Colombia
QF Ireland - Argentina 'B'
QF Germany - South Africa 'B'
QF Uruguay - Brazil
QF Chile - France 'B'

Basically, Paraguay and Colombia are out of World Cup qualification. Chile and Uruguay are still favorites to advance, but should Brazil beat Uruguay (not unthinkable since they did just that in Punta del Este) they'll boost their chances.

If Brazil ends 2 positions above Uruguay it is Brazil in the World Cup. If two teams are equal in number of points, their ranking will be determined by the results of the matches played between them. Brazil defeated Uruguay in Punta.

Uruguay just beat Brazil 14-7 and Chile lost to France 7-14 in Vina Sevens quarter finals. As a result, Chile and Uruguay qualify to both San Francisco and the Hong Kong qualy. Now, only the participation in Vancouver and Vegas is at stake...one spot for either Uruguay or Chile.

The other QF results were:
Ireland 7 - Argentina 5
Germany 12 - South Africa 26

Watching the tournament outside Latin America continues to be a challenge. All I could find was these links from the tournament official website, but they only show Chile games:
