Would have made much more sense to play Brazil away than home...they would have had some home ground advantage, fans would have watched a better team but playing Brazil home, with Romania A?
That is not the correct application of the "Georgia Law".
This states it is not officially your A team until it has lost.

Howells said that this home game will be played with young players from Super Liga and will be a different group of players compared with the squad who'll go to Canada and Japan.

Viorel = GREAT MAN, indeed
As a first-year RUGBY writer,
have been interviewing HIM for FULL 4 hours
despite protests from accompanying KGB snout
Viorel was too glad to see a youngster, in that ALIEN land, who
was so KEEN to LEARN everything about RUGBY from an OLD SAGE
KGB intervened and interrupted us several times
but Viorel managed to renew discussions over and again, in another places
This happened on Sat, 4 Oct 1986, in Vake *Turbaza*
where Grivita stayed to play Tbilisi selection -- ROM easily won 32-9 (t 5/1)

He was a great personality and was always keen to speak about rugby and I don't recall a test match or important match where he didn't attend, despite his age. This was something that all who knew him well are saying, he never stopped talking about rugby.
I'm curious, why KGB didn't allowed to talk with people from fellow communist countries? I can understand such behavior if you'd have tried to speak with an Englishman of Frenchman but a Romanian? How dangerous was a rugby team from here visiting? Sure, such groups always have attached KGB or Securitate officers and they lacked culture, knowledge and were basically paranoid and but still, how tight was this control? I lived partly in those times but as a child so even if I remember a lot some things are still odd for me.

Interesting story, i have few also from my father &my godfather. Going outside of Romania to play for Romania or Farul Constanta ALWAYS with a secret service agent traveling with their team.
Viorel Morariu dedicated his life to this sport. RIP.

I was 25 then
KGB man was from Ukraine - claiming had playing rugby for Politehnic Kiiv
Yes, they were paranoid - foreigner is a foreigner, no matter where from
And he was not happy that we spoke fluent english -
whereas he did NOT and thus could NOT check us -
he was NOT interested to listen to a long rugby talk either
In addition, Romania was treated as non-friendly neighbour
after staying away from invading Czechoslovakia in 1968

Re: Romanian Rugby
Thank you FD! I imagine his horror when you two chatted in a foreign capitalist language that he didn't understood about such a bourgeois sport
Probably he was worried that he cannot fill the report if the discussion will be too long.
Here we seem to minimize this event. I always thought it's just politics and didn't had consequences to small levels like sport teams touring Romania or Soviet Union. I presume these events were quite common for all sort of sports.

As luca tim said, Timisoara won once again Super Liga; the match was very close one and any team could have emerged victorious.
In Bronze final the result was CSM Bucuresti 37 - 24 Steaua Bucuresti. A nice win by CSM after Steaua colapsed at the beginning of the second half. I'll post highlights as soon as they'll be available.

Re: Romanian Rugby
Interesting news from Romanian club rugby:
Baia Mare: Apjock leaves the club after 14 years, both parties agreed a changed is needed. The new coach is George Sava (Poli Iasi) who is coming back to Baia Mare after 17 years.
Steaua: Coach Cristian Petre won't continue so they are looking for a new coach as well
CSM: Bradley most probably will leave for Zebre
Timisoara: Chester Williams was only a temporary solution so probably he'll need a new coach as well; I don't think Anesi will be head coach.
Poli Iasi: after losing Sava, one of the best assets of the club, they certainly need a good coach to deal with that young squad.

Man, I feel so sorry for Romania if that's your schedule again...
REC 2018 never happened. Please respect my beliefs

Armchair Fan wrote:Man, I feel so sorry for Romania if that's your schedule again...
it's a joke of a schedule, I guess the only way is to beat a T1 at RWC, hopefully the players will be fired up by this and do their best to prepare the tournament.
I would have been all for playing Brazil but 1 time and away if possible, for the public who probably wants to see a different team there. But twice at home..it's just a joke.
Re: Romanian Rugby
Oaks seems to enjoy a lot this tour considering their facebook posts
Kudos to the hosts , this is an admirable welcome!
Marius Simionescu (fullback, Timisoara Saracens/Romania U20) completed the squad after Jack Umaga was unable due to injury to go on tour.

What a very nice welcome from Japan. This must be the first overseas June tour for some of these players in quite some time wouldn't it?
