lineups:
https://www.super-liga.ro/informatii-meci/?im=6272

The match to watch this round as Gloria Buzau is a candidate to top 4 spot after CSM disappeared.

Timisoara Saracens - U Cluj - this one may be replayed later
https://www.rugbytv.ro/2019/08/30/31-au ... -et-1.html

lineups:

This match looks very one sides as U Cluj squad is very young and unexperienced

Timisoara today:
5. Muresan 6 Neculau 8 Tatarus 9 Rupanu 10 Vaovasa? 11 Manumua? 13 Popa 14 Zaharia 15 Simionescu (and some others) - likely they'll be national team regulars in 3-5 yrs.

Seeing that Romania has interrupted its participation to the RWC and God knows when it will qualify again I would like to write some statistics from the eight World Cups where the Team already took part.
Most Points scored in one tournament: 65 (2003)
Most Points conceived in one tournament: 192 (2003)
Biggest win: vs. Namibia, 37-7 (2003)
Biggest lost: vs. Australia, 8-90 (2003)
Player with most Points: Vlaicu, 28 points summed in 2007, 2011, 2015
Player with most Tries: Tincu, 3 tries, all in 2007
Player with most Points in one Tournament: Mitu, 25 Points in 1999
Most Matches played against one Team: 3 Matches each vs. France, Scotland, Canada, Australia, Ireland (against Ireland and Scotland would have been the fourth match in Japan)
Total tries scored in all tournaments: 39 plus one Penalty try vs. Ireland in 2003
Total wins: 6 (vs. Zimbabwe in 1987, Fiji in 1991, USA in 1999, Namibia in 2003, Portugal in 2007, Canada in 2015)
My personal opionion for the best Tournament is 1991 (actually the only chance to qualify to the QF if they would have won against Canada) and the one from 2015 was also pretty good. The worse tournaments could be 1995 and 2011.

1995 was disappointing for the loss to Canada but you guys fought hard v both Boks and Wallabies. Especially v Boks you kept the scoreline pretty close. 03 and 07 were pretty bad for the huge losses v Wallabies and ABs.

Today in SuperLiga CEC Bank - wk3:

U Cluj Prodvinalco- CS Dinamo Rugby 28-20 (3-10)
A good second half for Cluj to win their second game of the championship. Not bad for a young team - great start of the season for flanker Cristian Murgoci (no7 for U Cluj) after 4 tries last week in Constanta, another 2 this morning.

CSA Steaua Bucurest Rugby - CS Tomitanii Constanta 80-19 (31-9)
One way traffic here!... Tomitanii seem to be in a bad place this start of the championship, they need some good results to rebuild their confidence (they play Dinamo next week)

Timisoara Saracens - SCM Gloria Buzau 38-10 (26-3)
Securing bonus point in the first half, Timisoara were by far the superior team. Buzau came back in the last part of the game and had a few good minutes close to Saracens try line.
highlights: https://www.facebook.com/rugbytimisoara/videos/533895947385319/?t=163

Timisoara, CSA Steaua and Baia Mare maintain a visible gap between themselves and the rest of the SuperLiga teams.
U Cluj and SCM Buzau look like the more likely teams to fight for the 4th spot and a semifinal position...a long way to go still!

2 big games in the next 2 weeks. I expect to be shown live on TVR1 si TVR HD or RugbyTv.ro
CSM Stiinta Baia Mare – Timisoara Saracens (21Sept)
Timisoara Saracens - CSA Steaua (28Sept)

U Cluj started in force, two good wins and they challenge the 4th spot and Buzau will have good competition from them. I'm curious to see if this is just a burst of form of Cluj or is indeed an improvement of their level.

Tomitanii are in an odd position, they've got some nice wins last season but despite some infusion of experienced players from CSM they seem to sink. They played some nice rugby and tried to attack with speed and creativity but they failed to score.

Buzau line up was mostly a second team and they've put up a stern resitance once the subs come in.

Yesterday Romanian SuperLiga CEC Bank week4 results:

CSM Stiinta Baia Mare - Timisoara Saracens 28-24 (8-17) - try score 3-3
A Baia Mare red card half way through first half (due for investigation next week by the SuperLiga oficials) + yellow card for the home team
as the game was heading for half time, was supposed to be a decisive advantage for Timisoara starting the second half (they even increased the gap to 8-24 in the 44th min!).
Instead of closing the game, Timisoara gave away 3 consecutive yellow cards. Baia Mare worked hard, took advantage and managed to turn the game around in a mad second half taking the lead 25-24 in the 77 min + then added penalty kick in the 80th min to finsh the game. Sione Fakaosilea got a man of the match performance for Baia Mare (!)
Teams:
C.S.M.Știința Baia Mare: 15.Paul Popoaia, 14.David Feliuai, 13.Jason Tomane, 12.Sione Fakaosilea, 11.Taliauli Sikuea, 10.Ratu Taniela Maravunawasawasa, 9.Sebastian Agapie, 1.Iulian Harțig, 2.Ovidiu Cojocaru, 16.Revazi Dugladze, 4.Marius Dănilă-cpt, 5.Florian Roșu, 6.Faofaaki Holoia, 7.Jacob Immelman, 8.Cristi Chirică
Rezerve: 3.Alexandru Oancea, 17.Constantin Pristaviță, 18.Laurențiu Nica, 19.Alexandru Alexe, 20.Alexandru Țiglă, 21.Dorin Gigi Manole, 24.Adrian Apostol, 25.Dumani Mtya
Antrenori: Eugen Apjok, Paul Rusu

Timișoara Saracens: 15.Luke Samoa, 14.Vlăduț Zaharia, 13.Vlăduț Popa, 12.Moa Mua Maliepo, 11.Tevita Manumua, 10.Vaovasa Hinckley, 9.Bidzina Shamkaradze, 1.Sione Taupaki, 2.Eugen Căpățînă-cpt, 3.Sione Halalilo, 4.Valentin Popârlan, 5.Ionuț Mureșan, 6.Vlad Neculau, 7.Vasile Rus, 8.Damian Strătilă
Rezerve: 16.Andrei Rădoi, 17.Marius Lungu, 18.Paea Fanoifua, 19.Viorel Sabău, 20.George Tătăruș, 21.Gabriel Rupanu, 22.Jack Umaga, 23.Stephen Shennan
Antrenori: Sosene Anesi, Ulises Gamboa

SCM Gloria Buzau - CS Prodvinalco U Cluj 31-21 (20-16) - try score 4-3
Even game with Buzau getting the upper hand today and their first win in the league this season. Both teams are showing good signs and likely to fight for the 4th spot this year. Great to see some good local public support in the stadion yesterday...

ACS Tomitanii Constanta - CS Dinamo Bucuresti 26-36 (14-21) - try sccore 4-5
Another well balanced game, Dinamo with less individual mistakes managed to get all points. Tomitanii continue their search for first win of
the season. In the local paper Cristian Cojocaru, Tomitani's club president was acting as the principal coach too... meaning Danie de Villiers might be out of the picture (?)...or on a short trip to Japan, maybe (!)

Current standings:
https://www.super-liga.ro/superliga/clasament/

1. TimiSoara Saracens – 16p (168-70) – 4 games
2. CSM Stiinta BM – 13p (88-56) – 3
3. CSA Steaua Buc – 11p (128-54) – 3
4. CS Univ. Cluj – 9p (101-129) – 4
5. Dinamo Buc Rugby – 5p (70-106) – 3

Yesterday's results in the Romanian Superliga CEC Bank2019-2020:

CS Prodvinalco U Cluj - CSM Stiinta Baia Mare 15-52 (3-28)
U Cluj continues to put accent on younger player development (10+ players on the pitch under 23)...Baia Mare was by far the superior team.

CS Dinamo Bucuresti - SCM Gloria Buzau 31-15 (20-3)
Game decided in the first half with Dinamo taking a big advantage into the second half. It seems Buzau starts playing only when they are behind.
They have a good team this season, i expected to push Dinamo more.

Timisoara Saracens - CSA Steaua Bucuresti 13-20 (6-13)
Second derby in a row lost by Timisoara after last week game in Baia Mare...Even game, the team who made fewer mistakes won today. Timisoara really need to work on their game discipline. too many penalties + another 2 yellow cards on the day.

So far the interesting part of this Superliga is U Cluj.

Many don't rate their coaching team but it seems they can battle with good chance for a place in the play off, despite having a very young team (also many players likely to be in next U20 squad).

Tomitanii is in shambles and don't look like they'll recover anytime soon. They started the season with some players missing due to financial issues (which were eventually solved) and with a new coach (Danie de Villiers) who resigned after few rounds and heavy defeats. Team looks quite far of what it was last seasons and despite a win in a Cup round which was postponed during SL season. It is possible they'll look better later in the season if they will be able to gel the team together.

Gloria Buzau was considered one favorite to play off but they didn't looked too good this first rounds. Granted, they schedule wasn't helping them, they played the big names (Steaua, BM, TM) and they won vs U Cluj but the team isn't looking convincing.

However, it will be interesting to see this duel for 4th place especially because both have some very young players. So far nobody challenged the top 3 for some extra points

I don't know what would bridge the gap between top 3 and the rest?...they have the club setup, the bigger budgets and heritage on their side.
Maybe some quality and innovative coaching starting at lower levels that pull through new talent to first teams.

Still dissapointing attendance numbers in stadiums...not sure if SuperLiga is measuring it's brand awareness increase/decrease in the context of RWC19 and primary TV channel broadcasting?...they should. It would have been the best time to work out on some advertising campaigns and prepare to push attendances for the REIC games next February.

The players from the lower clubs look like a selection of random people from the street for their physique, not like pros. They always run out of steam towards the end of the game. The physical and stamina aspects are the simplest to solve, yet these clubs are so poorly trained they can't even do that "right". I say "right" instead of right because the other clubs aren't doing it right either. They are far behind the clubs from England, etc...

Not really, I think Buzau only need a bench on the same level with the first XV. They are just picking games right now. But yes, strength conditioning is a big issue in our rugby.

With few exceptions, coaching teams are mere improvisations or have one one competent person around. I'd like to see less money into players and some put into quality coaches and not even for long time but visiting coaches with top experience.

During RWC I don't expect people on stadium especially for matches which are played in the morning during RWC ones. I wouldn't trade RWC for a SL or DNS match, with all the respect for players. And after 3 Saturday matches it's hard to go and watch the one which is scheduled in the afternoon.

After RWC I expect more people in stands, I usually watch one match / week in Bucharest, DNS or SL.

I still think they need to develop their brand if SuperLiga is to resist over time. Need to build some financial muscle and reduce it's reliance on FRR.
It will leave FRR to support to start with, then strategic work and open doors when /and if needed.
Sponsorships, events, partnerships with other leagues, coaching experiences for new coaches from abroad ...but that will depend on SuperLiga being an interesting enough partner that can offer some sort of pay-off...
Can you do that with the infrastructure we have now around current stadiums?...on some level, probably yes.

Big surprise at this midweek game (round 8) in SuperLiga.
CS Prodvinalco U Cluj - Timisoara Saracens 27-19 (6-12)

Teams / U Cluj:
1.Petucher,2.Birladeanu,3.Telesa,4.Ghenea,5.Rotar[C],6.Vasile,7.Pricopie,8.Murgoci,9.Ciaparii,10.Melniciuc,11.C.Straja,12.Damian,13.Banu,
14.Mihalache,15.Mazare
Rez: 16.Placintar,17.R.Straja,18.Gheta,19.Coroian,20.Curca,21.Ballock,22.Bocanet,23.Toma
Timisoara:
1.Taupaki Sione,2.Capatina[C],3.HalaliloSione,4.Popirlan,5.Muresan,6.Tatarus,7.Lazar,8.Stratila,9.Rupanu,10.Vaovasa,11.Simionescu,12.Popa, 13.Maliepo,14.Shennan,15.Samoa
Rez:16.Radoi,17.Fonoifua Paea,18.Aranda German,19.Sabau,20.Morrison,21.Samkharadze,22.Jipa,23.Zaharia

Unexpected win for Cluj on the back of very poor play from Timisoara. Questions started to be raised immediately after the game as why that happened and if other factors are at play here. (Timisoara's team is one of the most experienced in the league).
In the previous showings (cup & league) between the 2 teams (both in the last 6 weeks!), Timisoara won by +35points.

Saying that, Cluj did their job and carried on with the game...man of the match performance for Virgil Ghenea (former Aurillac Espoirs player last season). Big credit to the coaching team H.Himpea, C.Sauan & R.Roman, started with 5 youngsters (U23) in the first 15: V.Ghenea (18 ani), A. Pricopie (19), C.Straja (20), D.Damian (22), P.Mihalache (20).
The other 6 U23 players on the bench for the day: D.Placintar (20), R.Straja (21), V. Coroian (21), A. Ballok (21), A.Toma (19), V.Bocanet (20)

The other games for round 8 on Saturday 19th Oct:

ACS Tomitanii Constanta - CSM Stiinta Baia Mare 18-54 (13-28)
SCM Gloria Buzau - CSA Steaua Bucuresti 19-45 (7-24)

(Dinamo Bucharest not playing this round - only 7 teams in the league this sezon.)

On that note:
Romanian Rugby Union officials had discussions with 'Stiinta Petrosani Rugby' regarding their presence in the next year of Romanian CEC Bank SuperLiga.
Stiinta have been leaders in the National Division (second tier Romanian rugby) for the last years but never went for promotion due to costs of running a competitive pro team. If enough support is available we'll be seeing them next year.
We can assume discussions to continue and FRR will check the level of interest from local authority and current sponsors for this proposal.

That was quite a surprise win.

However, U Cluj's margins against top teams lowered considerably in last two years and they won duels with Dinamo, Tomitanii or Buzau so an improvement was noticeable. But with all that, nobody expected them to win vs Timisoara and people rightly question this and rumors arise about delayed salaries (which is seems is not the issue since a significant portion of the due ones was paid recently, at least this is what I hear from Timisoara but I might be wrong is just hearsay).

Ghenea seem to get a lot of trust there and he enjoys himself. He come back also for school, Babeș-Bolyai University which is a great school.
