Interesting/unexpected news in Brazil: the final of the Cerrado Trophy (Taça Cerrado) between Goianos Rugby Clube (from Goiânia) and Rugby Sem Fronteiras (from Brasília) will be this Saturday (17) in Brasília (Brazil's capital) at the Estádio Nacional ("National Stadium"), one of the 2014 FIFA World Cup stadiums! It will be the first time that a rugby match will be in one WC stadium.

Taça Cerrado is a regional 15-a-side competition for clubs from the states of Goiás, Tocantins and the Federal District (Brasília), in Central Brazil (Cerrado = Central Brazil's praires). This tournament has just 4 clubs and it is not recognized by the Brazilian Rugby Union, that recognizes just the rugby unions of 6 of the 27 Brazilian States.

UNB Rugby (the Brasilia National University team, from Brasília) and Palmas Rugby Clube (from Palmas, in Tocantins) will play for the 3rd place at the Estádio Nacional too.

With soccer being really poor in Brasília (the best club is in the Brazilian fourth division, something odd for a capital in the world), the Estádio Nacional has few events and is called a genuine "White Elephant". They started offering the stadium FOR FREE for local football clubs and now for rugby! Maybe the Brazilian National Team will be able to play there soon.

Rugby Europe votes 13-1 in favour of reconsidering Gibraltar's application for membership. Could be seeing a new nation taking part in the REIC in a few years!

They played and beat Montenegro last year and Finland this year, I think they would be a good addition, although I'm sure the Spanish Union will object

It's not even a question of Spanish Rugby Union, as if it were its choice. Spanish government asks all sport federations to object. Spanish rugby fans couldn't care less about this issue and if I'm not mistaken some Gibraltar clubs have occasionally played in Andalucía regional leagues.

Thought this was interesting; Kenyan official James Absaloms was citing commissioner for the Maori vs Lions match and the first test!

It would be the return of Pacific Islanders after ten years of sabbatical rest. Last time they played, it was in my city against Italy.
But I suspect it's a joke, or the dream of a colombian fan

I believe that for the first time rugby is part of Maccabiah Games. In Sevens competition South Africa clinched gold after beating Israel in the final. Argentina won bronze, ahead of Australia, USA an France.

Now it's time for XV games, with the same teams involved, except for France.

Brazilian Northern League is perhaps one of the hardest 15-a-side competitions in the world. Last Saturday, Porto Velho Rugby Clube (from Porto Velho, Rondônia state) travelled 3,000 km (2,000 miles) BY CAR crossing the Amazon Forest to play Makuxi Rugby Clube, from Boa Vista (Roraima state).

Makuxi 36-12 Porto Velho, final score.

GRUA, from Manaus, leads the league: http://www.portaldorugby.com.br/tabelas/norte

Yes, we had a very sentimental week in Brazilian rugby community. Very sad.
