Unfortunately no occurrences at all about rugby & Greenland but it would be great to play a test match there. It's the soccer field in Nuuk, the capitol city. I don't know why they have all the houses identical but the effect is good. It seems like a Frodo village. If there will ever be a rugby team in Greenland they'll have to choice if competing in Europe or Americas

2017 Global player numbers according to World Rugby Year in Review
Image

I'd say they've tried to be more serious this year, some figures have clearly been downgraded from 2016 report.

Brazilian number are completely false. We have no more than 11.000 players. The rest is the number of kids that touched a rugby ball in a tag rugby event.

USA Numbers are wrong, we have less than 90k players, about 120k total members. And the 1.5MM players total is completely wrong.

I can't imagine where the 72k players in the Netherlands come from either. Someone must have given those figures to WR though for whatever reason.

I don't understand why they can't offer trustable numbers, at least for the registered players' column.
Italy passed in a year from 87K to 82K players, how is it possible? It would be a disaster to lose 6% of the players in a season, and I very doubt it happened.
China has more players than Scotland, of course; they will soon substitute the scottish in the 6N...
It's negatively surprising the data of Korea; just 1.177 players, I suppose considering also juniors and women. It's a miracle they are still fighting for the second place of the continent with such a thin base

My guess is that the second numbers are "Get into Rugby" numbers. World Rugby gets them reported, so they probably decided to use them somehow. They came up with this. :D

Edit: a quick google search reveals, that the German numbers match exactly, as we reported 18.000 contacts with Get into Rugby in that year.
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

In Spain it's a bit crazier: 2017 World Rugby registered players numbers + 2016 (not 2017) Get into Rugby FER numbers.

This means WR should separate GIR's Tag Rugby from full rugby.

The question they should ask the Union (and expect honesty...) is: how many players have played 15-a-side, 7-a-side or 10-a-side rugby in competitions organized by the national union or recognized regional unions/leagues and/or state-sponsored tournaments in your country last year?

Such a separation would be possible in the countries with rugby population >10k. To be honest, in Poland more less 50% of players playing 7-a-side play also 15s in the leagues.

I think every country has such problem. But you don't have a proper calculation without a clear criterea. No union controls the number of players playing friendlies or only training...

Also, this would be a way for the national union to chancel local small sevens tournaments, as recognized development competitions (very important to boost rugby).

"Total players" includes school, tag rugby, Get Into Rugby, etc. It's not a very significant number.

Mystery solved: the "Rugby Games" will be promotional challenge the Brazilian Rugby Union will organize to promote rugby players. The event will be on April 28th and the highlight will be a kicking challenge between Tupis' kiwi fly-half Josh Reeves and Raí (former Brazilian national football player, PSG and São Paulo FC idol and world champions with Brazil in 1994).

My two favorite minnow international competitions for clubs are the Balkans Cup (official name: Regional Rugby Championship) and the Top 6 Ocean Indien (or Corsair Cup, after the name of the sponsor). Here it is an update of the ongoing editions

RRC

5 teams from 3 countries: Ljubljana, Zagreb, Split, Dalmacija (Makarska+Sinj), Zenica
Image

The schedule is in big rescheduling due to the snow of the past weeks
This saturday there's only one match: Dalmacija v Zagreb Ragbi Savez

Ranking (matches played): RK Nada (2) 6 pts, RK Ljubljana (2) 5, Zagreb RS (1) 4, RK Čelik (0) 0, Dalmacija (1) 0.

Top 6 Ocean Indien

6 teams from 4 countries: two from Tananarive, two from Reunion, one from Mauritius, one from Mayotte
Image

This saturday the penultimate round before the finals: Mayotte v Force Armees, Highland Blues v Etang Salé

Ranking
Pool A: St.Paul (Reu) 14, Force Armee (Mad) 6, Mayotte 0
Pool B: Manjakaray (Mad) 12, Etang Salé (Reu) 7, Highland Blues (Mau) 0

In fact it's not 4 countries but 3, as Reunion and Mayotte are part of France ;)
Will their be a finale between Saint Paul and Manjakaray ?

Yes, on april 29 there will be the three finals (5th, 3rd, 1st); all of them in La Reunion.
The names of the main finalists anyway are still not decided: the last round on april 21 (St.Paul v Forces Armee, Etang Sale v Manjakaray) will be determinant

Next weekend the last, decisive round before the finals: Etang Sale v Manjakaray, St.Paul v Forces Armée

Balkans Cup

Last weekend there was just one match fixed but Zagreb Ragbi Savez asked Dalmacija (both the teams are croatian) to postpone the event because they weren't able to gather enough players. The coastal club accepted but the fans on facebook were angry: "it's a shame", "they should award a 20-0 victory", "this competition is turning on a farce" were some of the comments.
