Small news

Postby Canalina » Thu, 21 Apr 2016, 22:13

Usa - A nice video from the states with a physio and a knee-injured player as protagonists https://www.facebook.com/USASevens/vide ... 301997856/

Finland - A nice video also from Finland, with a centre and a lumber as protagonists https://vimeo.com/163288343

ParaOlympics - USA and France qualified for the wheelchair rugby ParaOlympic Games after defeating Denmark and New Zealand in the semifinals of the qualifying tournament. Final rankings: 1 Usa, 2 France, 3 Denmark, 4 New Zealand 5 Germany, 6 Finland

Easter Island - Rapa Nui/Easter Island will host its first international 7s tournament this november, with a transcontinental participation. Ten teams are waited: four from South America, three from Tahiti, two from Rapa Nui, one composed by players touring the island without a squad. In the image below, from left to right: Samoa, Tahiti, Easter Island and Chile. Between Tahiti and Easter Island there are also the Pitcairn Islands, not viewable in the map, but they have just 56 inhabitants so probably they will not be able to send a team in Rapa Nui

That video's actually from Canada, not the states! My wife plays with the trainer at Stoney Creek RFC.

I'll add one bit

Georgia - RL will wake-up after 10-year-long hibernation at the end of May once Union's domestic season closes. Four clubs (probably Hooligana, Iveria, Rustavi, Bagrati - none of them among Biggies) are slated to take part in one-leg round-robin (3 rounds in all, without Grand Final). This will right the wrongs of 2005-06 when *13 KARTVELI* held 6 tests (4W 2L) but two GEO teams NEVER met

The Madagascar's Top8 championship played its final match in front of the usual full stadium, even if this time the hosting venue seems the new stadium and not the old under the Tananarive's hills. But the "human wall" of spectators is always the same. The referee was a woman

Image
Cuba will host in autumn an international veterans' tournament. Not real news, Cuba already hosted in the past veterans' events; but it's good to see their rugby (slowly) increasing as organization because I think they could become a power in the region if they started to adopt rugby

Image
In northern Europe the rugby field are often immersed in the green, at the opposite of Italy where sport field are almost always bounded by concrete and iron nets, but sometime the green may be a problem as we see in the image of a Denmark's photographer

Image
The Armenia's rugby, restarting from his ashes, organized the first stage outside the capitol city in a village at the feet of the mount Ararat. I don't know if it was a success or not. Rugby players in the country are still very few. In Armenia there are worries for a revamping Nagorno-Karabah war against Azerbaijan, an other country where rugby seems going back

Afghanistan - A rugby field was inaugurated a month ago in the Kabul University. After the blooming of a pair of years ago afghan rugby has been quiet, let's hope this field will give them a new push http://www.khaama.com/rugby-club-inaugu ... mpus-01100

Ethiopia - An update (in italian) of the effort of a young Addis Abeba man to spread rugby in Ethiopia. They've just lived their first "Rugby Day" with a good group of boys and kids on a park. "The major task is to find a proper field" says Resha Abdu, echoing the words of the afghan players in the article above http://www.rugby.it/news/2016/06/26/la- ... rugby-day/

Rapa Nui - A team of Rapa Nui/Easter Island (the only team of the island, probably) participated as a guest in the last stage of the French Polynesia 7s championship, finishing fourth out of six squads. Rapa Nui is organizing its own 7s tournament for the end of november but they are still searching for participants https://www.facebook.com/matamuarapanui/

One nice news, one not…

A quite famous kenyan player from Nakuru RFC has been arrested cause heavily suspected to want to join the Shabaab guerrilla in Somalia http://allafrica.com/stories/201606150166.html

The third placed in the recent Miss Namibia contest, Varaakuani Hambira, is a welwitschias fan and a 1st level rugby referee. She is the first girl from right in the photo above; miss Namibia is the second from right

The national team of Tunisia play this wednesday a test with a Midi Pyrenees selection, in Valence d'Agen (Fra)

The big part of the players of San Marino are inserted this year too in the team of Rimini (Ita), competing in the lower italian category (pool of my region). The name of the squad is Rimini/San Marino but the field is in Rimini and the most of the players seems coming from the italian territory, so I think the day of the first San Marino's test match is still distant

World Rugby Classic at the Bermudas. It's an annual event for former national players of an age of (I think) 35 years or more

Quarterfinals
Lions v Italy 38-7
Canada v South Africa 17-14
Argentina v Usa today
France v New Zealand today

The most capped players present at the World Classic
Martin Castrogiovanni: 119 caps for Italy
Percy Montgomery: 102 caps for South Africa
Shane Williams: 87 Caps for Wales, 4 caps for Lions
Andrew Hore: 83 caps for the All Black
Andrew Mehrtens: 70 caps for the All Blacks
Carlos Ignacio Lobbe: 65 caps for Argentina
George Shvelidze 62 caps for Georgia (here he plays for France)

Results of the Underwater Rugby U21 World Championships, just played in a norwegian swimming pool

Men: 1 Turkey, 2 Germany, 3 Colombia
Women: 1 Colombia, 2 Norway, 3 Germany

It's unusual to see Turkey world champion in rugby

Have any of you ever seen underwater rugby? It really doesn't have anything to do with rugby.

I think they have something in common even if, I admit, not so much; it's a wrestling to conquer a ball and to bring it to a goal, there's something resounding rugby

This is a comparison of the ranking of the main rugby games. Oceania leads them all

Collecting all the international rugby rolls of honor is an enterprise hard also for the Titans, there are a thousand of different international trophies in the history. This notwithstanding I tried to start a collection of rolls of honor, here there are the first ones with names in italian as usual

Thank you. Sorry for the mistake in Tbilisi Cup. It's plenty of other cup, over there. I'm interested overall in minnow cup, like the Alpen Cup between Germany and Switzerland for example. Id est the little international trophies whose memory could vanish out if we don't record at least their roll of honor

Friendly, last saturday: Mornar Bar (Mne) v RK Tirana (Alb) 59-3

There should be at least two or three clubs in Albania: two in Tirana and perhaps one in Vlore
