Bigger and better for Uruguay in 2017
http://www.americasrugbynews.com/2016/1 ... guay-2017/
- The Campeonato Uruguayo will again be a 12-team competition, divided into two divisions of six, to be played erlier in the year.
- The top four Uruguayan clubs are to play in Argentine domestic club competitions. The first and second placed sides will play in Argentina’s Nacional de Clubes ‘B’, playing no fewer than six matches and will have the opportunity to qualify for the Quarter Finals.
- The third and fourth placed Uruguayan clubs will play in the Torneo del Interior B. They will play at least three fixtures.
- The fifth and sixth placed Uruguayan clubs will play in a four team competition together with the Brazilian national champion and runner-up.
Los Teros Calendar
- February, March; Americas Rugby Championship The second edition of the tournament will see Uruguay playing home matches against Brazil, Canada and Chile. Matches against the USA and Argentina XV will be away.
- May; South American ‘A’ Championship, (RWC Qualification) Uruguay will be joined by Brazil and Chile in addition to a fourth team, potentially Paraguay. The winner will advance to face the runner-up of Canada vs USA in October, and will be the Americas 2 automatic qualifying spot for Rugby World Cup 2019..
- June; Potential Home tests vs England and Georgia (in negotiations). Uruguay seeks to play both before they face Los Pumas.
- November; European Tour. Three away internationals. Opposition is yet to be determined.
Uruguay XV
- The URU is seeking to send the official ‘A’ side to Romania for the WR Nations Cup instead of Los Teros.
- The second edition of the Americas Pacific Challenge will again be played ahead of the end-of-year internationals.

Also, Uruguay will host the U20 World Trophy in August, and the sevens team will play the South American qualifiers to the Hong Kong qualifier.

Re: Rugby in Uruguay
This weekend it's the 23rd edition of the Torneo Valentín Martínez, a youth tournament held at Carrasco Polo.
It will feature 188 rugby teams aged 6 to 19 from six South American countries. (If a club fields teams at each category, it counts multiple times, I guess.)
There will be also a women's rugby and field hockey, for a total 6,500 players.

Re: Rugby in Uruguay
If Uruguay hosts England would that be the first time they've ever played a T1 nation at home?

This tournament is amazing.

Do you consider Italy Tier 1? They hosted Italy twice. And of course Argentina many times.
I am impressed by the number of games Uruguayan national teams will have in 2016:
- 5 matches in Americas Rugby Championship: Argentina XV, USA, Canada, Chile and Brazil;
- 3 maches in South American Championship: Chile, Brazil and Paraguay;
- 1 match in South American Cup: Argentina XV;
- 3 matches in Nations Cup: Romania, Spain and Italy "A";
- 3 matches in Americas Pacific Challenge: USA "A", Samoa "A" and Argentina XV again;
- 3 November tests: Germany, Spain and Romania;
- 5 ou 6 matches in Argentine Championship (depends if they will play the Promotion Playoff): San Juan, Santiago del Estero, Chubut, Oeste and Lagos;
- and I remember 2 main friendlies against top division Argentine provinces (Rosario in August and now Córdoba)... am I forgeting any other?
Between test matches and matches against main development national teams and Argentine provinces the total is 25 or 26!

Re: Rugby in Uruguay
One can only lift his hat and congratulate Uruguay. Somebody seems to be really serious about wanting to improve. We will see, but if this efforts continue I would bet that we have the same 20 teams at the next world cup (if Namibia isn't beaten by Kenia or Zimbabwe that is).
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

I think there could also be a surprise in Europe...

I would hardly call Russia with Enissei now playing a vital role in the Challenge Cup a surprise

But yeah, Europe 2 could be the hardest hurdle for Uruguay together with Africa 2.

Engalnd played a South Ameerica XV combined team at Estadio Charrúa in 2013 (we lost 41-21).
The team featured players like Tomás Cubelli, Javier Ortega Desio and Agustín Ormaechea.

Last weekend, the Lobos Sevens was held at the Cantegril Country Club in Punta del Este. Carrasco Polo won the tournament.
Next weekend it's the Paysandú Sevens, with several Uruguayan and Argentine teams.

In an hour, Uruguay XV will play the Alto Valle de Río Negro y Neuquén. The winner will play the 2017 Campeonato Argentino Zona Ascenso A and the loser will play the Zona Ascenso B.
Re: Rugby in Uruguay
Good won, looked a tight game! These Uruguayan players need to be playing at a better level so hope they get promoted again next year to the top division.
Re: Rugby in Uruguay
Congratulations Uruguay!
Nordeste failed to be prometed from the 2nd division to the top division. This means Uruguay will face in 2017 Nordeste, Santa Fe, Mar del Plata, Entre Ríos and Sur. Tough.

Re: Rugby in Uruguay
¡Uruguay nomás!
Given the poor November tour, it wouldn't surprise me if the URU enters a less XV and more Teros side at the 2017 Campeonato Argentino.

Maybe some player in some match, because it overlaps with the Autumn internationals (the November window).

Re: Rugby in Uruguay
In 2017, the Uruguayan Championship will have a slightly different format.
The first semester features a Qualifying Tournament with 11 teams in a round robin:
Old Boys, Old Christians, Carrasco Polo, Cuervos, Cricket, Champagnat, Pucaru Stade Gallois, Trébol, Ceibos, Seminario and Lobos.
In the second semester, the top 6 teams will play the Zona Campeonato.
The other 5 teams plus Círculo de Tenis will play the Zona Reclasificación.
Both tournaments will be a single round robin.
The 6 teams in the Zona Campeonato and the top 2 teams in the Zona Reclasificación will play an 8-team playoffs.
The quarter-finals and semifinals will be played home and away.
The final will be played at Estadio Charrúa.
