BTW, AFAIK IOC now limits its membership to United Nations members. Non-UN members that became IOC members before this rule stayed as IOC members (I believe the rule was set in 2009 when IOC achieved UN Observer Status... is that right?). Those countries are:

AMERICAS:
Aruba
Bermuda
British Virgin Islands
Cayman Islands
Puerto Rico
US Virgin Islands

AFRICA:
None

EUROPE:
Kosovo

ASIA:
Hong Kong
Chinese Taipei (Taiwan)
Palestine

OCEANIA:
American Samoa
Cook Islands
Guam

___

FIFA, in the other hand, has the following non-IOC countries:

AMERICAS:
Anguilla
Curaçao
Montserrat
Turks and Caicos

AFRICA:
None

EUROPE:
Faroe Islands
Gibraltar
(and England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland)

ASIA:
Macau

OCEANIA:
New Caledonia
Tahiti

________

Apart from Wales, Scotland and England, the only World Rugby members that are not a IOC countries are Niue and Tahiti (WR members since before rugby became a Olympic sport).

North Korea was part of the F.I.R.A., the world amateur organization existing before the creation of IRB

"...Troop movement in 1992: Bosnia Herzegovine, North Korea, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavie, Ouzbekistan, Russia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Venezuela, Zaire enter the FIRA ... 1997: Both Korea (Northern and Southern), Ouzbekistan, Mexico, Nigeria and Seychelles are struck off. ..."

Amazing find! I always thought rugby might have been played im North Korea during Japanese occupation. In football Korean clubs indeed played the Japanese competitions prior to WWII. That would be logical that some rugby enthusiasts remained in North Korea.

And I forgot Cambodia suspended from Asia Rugby.

We can't be sure that rugby was really played in North Korea at the time. They could have had (and maybe still having) a dedicated board but not a real movement.

Anyway I noticed that that group of federations entering FIRA in 1992 was almost completely composed by socialist nations (also Zaire and Venezuela?), but it was not a complete list of former USSR states or satellites: there were not countries like Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, where rugby has always been very few played. This suggests that the list was not just a formal one and that in North Korea there was really some rugby activity.

Let's wait for some more clues.

I thought that the inclusion of 7s in the Olympics should have been a great opportunity to see some rugby from North Korea, because they take great care of the Olympic Games and they usually are relatively good in the olympic team sports, like football, basketball and baseball. But so far no one news about north korean rugby popped up from Asia

Before that as well. I watched them play three times last year, losing 26-22 to Denmark away, and beating Sweden 31-26 and Bermuda 22-6 at home. Apparently their first "test" was an 8-20 loss to Belgium in 2011, and since then they've played at least a dozen more, against the likes of Cyprus, Malta, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, UAE, Montenegro, Hungary and Finland, winning the majority. I believe there were 5 Cruz brothers on the pitch against the Magyars! Roughly half of these tests were against "XVs" or "Barbarians" sides, however, but given the fact Gibraltar is not affiliated to World Rugby, it doesn't really matter. The so-called "test" against Jamaica at the start of the year was an U23 encounter.

As for Kosovo, I suspect they have the same players involved in both codes, as Turkey does, in order to give them more match experience in a region starved of regular fixtures. Northern Cyprus, meanwhile, has a number of university teams dominated by students from Africa - notably Zimbabwe and Nigeria. The Pumas club actually won the Turkish league about a decade ago but had to withdraw in 2012 due to travel costs.

I've seen this and I thought "oh, nice, maybe they're trying to revamp rugby in Armenia!". But then I've seen the date of the video: 2011. The dream of that captain, to see all the armenian kids playing rugby, seems still very far from the realization

I've seen a series of interesting documentaries about the minoian society, existed about three millenniums ago in the island of Crete. It is said that it was the hotbed of the european culture (the president of the European tribunal in Aja has a throne replicant the Minos one, in honor of the minoians) and it's a pity that apparently there's no one rugby team in the island of Crete, this sort of European heart; there are or there were two rugby clubs in the smaller and less populated island of Rhodes, but no one in Crete.

Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

Interesting that Britain backed the creation of the Cretan State, that had autonomy from the Ottoman Empire from 1898 to 1913. Maybe rugby was played there by the British at that time, but clearly hasn't been incorporated by the locals. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cretan_State

The island more associated with the Atlantide myth is Santorini, which is indeed close to Crete. Santorini had minoan settlements too.

It could be a mix of the two islands: Santorini exploded, the consequent tsunami directed toward south heavily invested Knossos and the minoan fleet, letting the Kingdom prostrated and too weak to stop the subsequent invasion of the mycenaeans. So in the Plato's myth the destroyed island could be Santorini, and the destroyed society the Minoan one

More probably the Minoin eruption of Santorin combined with a moral education lesson of Platon for his fellow Greek citizens. The Minioans and their palace culture are extremely present in Greek mythology. Idomeneus, king of Crete fought in the Iliad against Troy. And the palace of Knossos where Theseus is supposed to have killed the Minotaur and can be visited until today (well there is no maze though). An impressive site. As a kid, I couldn't believe, that they actually had toilets with running water :D As an adult the sheer age of this 4000 year old beautiful place (with traces of settlement from 9000 years ago) caught me.
