Working Class Rugger wrote: Apparently, IMG are looking to establish a franchise 7s league in Europe.

I think it could work quite well in other regions as well. Including Sth America.

One or even two in Argentina, one in each of Chile, Uruguay and Brazil and a 6th somewhere perhaps Colombia. There would even be room for womens to run alongside it at the same events with similar billing.

Rugby sevens is an attempt to attract casual fans. Therefore, franchises are a bad idea. National teams are better for casual fans.

Imagine a random tourist in Punta del Este that hears about the sevens tournament. If the teams are called Chiefs, Dragons, Knights, Giants, Lions, Panthers, Sharks and Wolves, that person won't care much. But if the teams are Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France, Italy and United States, it gets much more interesting.

The Torneo Valentín Martínez will be played next week, on Friday 10 and Saturday 11.

The international women's sevens tournament will feature seven teams: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Perú and Uruguay.
They will play a round robin, with no playoffs.
The winner will play the Canada Sevens and World Cup, whereas the top two play the Hong Kong qualifier.

The Brazilian team is not offcial, it is composed by players not involved in the national team, most of them veterans.

There were issues with the playing field at the Bolivarian Games.

The rugby tournament will start today at the Parque Deportivo Bolivariano.

How are there problems with the field? It's brand new and fits World Rugby 22 regulations. It looks super nice.

2017 Bolivarians Games - in Santa Marta, Colombia (the Bolivarian Games are a multisports event held every 4 years for the countries of northern-western South America, those whose independence was achieved through Simon Bolivar's action.... nothing to do with Hugo Chaves' Bolivarianism, before somebody asks  )

Chile 38 x 00 Venezuela

Peru 00 x 19 Venezuela

Semifinals

Chile 26 x 05 Colombia

Paraguay 19 x 05 Venezuela

With the result Paraguay joined Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil and Colombia in Punta del Este and Viña del Mar Sevens next January, i. e. the South American Sevens Series

The tournament was supposed to be played in a nice new rugby-only field (artificial) in Santa Marta, northern Colombia. But it wasn't.
