RL has been excluded from the Russian Registry of recognized sports in 2010, which means RL cannot obtain funding from government and may have some difficulties with organizing competitions etc. Mr. Mutko said something like "we already play 15-men-rugby and we do not need 13-men-rugby". http://www.rc-vereya.ru/znachimaya-pere ... zhdunarodn

the letter you posted above is a typical bureaucracy about "to prevent", "to ensure" etc, addressed to "the heads of local executive bodies", it does not mention RL (though may imply it)

Rugby union was banned in the late 40s for a short time in the Soviet Union for being too 'Western.' However, it made a come-back in the 50s. It has also been banned in the past in China for being 'unseemly.' and, going back to the late 19th century, in parts of the US for being 'too violent' - allowing its offspring American football to take over.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, then why not in between?

This is nonsense. There's no single word about Rugby League. Rugby League is not banned in Russia and it is played! Is not included in the list of those sports that can receive funding from the state. It is completely amateur

A bit late but I confirm that rugby league is going ahead in Russia. They're in the second position of the Europe Cup B (the tournament involving the best squads outside GB, Ireland and France) and this saturday they host Italy in Moscow. Probably the've been ignored by russian government in favor of rugby union, but they've not been banned. It seems like the vicissitude of the women rugby in Iran: some years ago a cry burst in all the rugby world about the ban of women rugby by Teheran's authorities, but then we discovered that rugby women was and is going ahead in Iran as before, even if the players have to play completely dressed and veiled.

I opened this thread to insert a pair of other (not positive) league news, cause I don't see other league's threads:
- the match in Belgrade between Serbia and Ireland, celebrating the 120th birthday of rugby league, has been abandoned due to a brawl; the serbian coach is suspended sine die and a serbian player who kicked an irish player lying on the ground will be suspended too http://www.rlef.eu.com/news/article/112 ... s-sine-die
- a lebanese guy who tried to insert rugby league in the Arab Emirates has been jailed for two weeks cause he organized a tournament without the permission of local rugby union federation. The fact happened some months ago but, if real, it's creepy http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/sp ... -parochial

The guy in UAE was arrested because he had over stayed his visa and because he had been actibg as the president of an UAE sports federation, even taking sponsorship money, despite the fact that UAE laws state that only UAE citizens can be presidents of sports federations there.
