First ever Brazilian defeat against a South American rival. Congrats Colombia for the step forward!

My first thought when I saw they won - "hey, Victor just said Brazil was 100-0 last week!"
Re: Womens 7's rugby - general news
Yeah, now we are 101-1. But to be fair we haven't lost in the 14 minutes

Anyone have any info on the Asia women’s trophy 7s? I know a girl playing in the tournament and am keen to hopefully watch. All I know is it’s August 10-11 in Jakarta.

there are no direct flights between Russia and UkraineCanalina wrote:About Kharkiv 7s, I've seen on facebook nice images of the russian girls welcomed at the train station and it came to my mind that it was an unusual image. Because of the flowers? No, because of the train. No one team usually moves on train, I wonder why. I also wonder if it was a train transporting the players from the airport to the centre of Moscow or if they made all the voyage by train. It takes 12 hours and a half, according to google maps

You are right, the flight from Kharkiv to Moscow makes a stop in Minsk; anyway it takes 4h10', the train trip 13h20'

It seems confirmed, even if the list of participating teams is still not published. There will be also a men's Asia Trophy, same days and same venue.
As probably you know the Trophy is the second continental category, the first being the Asia 7s Series played in various venues.
There are good chances that the games will be shown live, on Asia Rugby youtube or facebook

Some San Marino women (how many? Not specified) will play in Romagna's select in the incoming Italian XV national championship (Romagna is the italian region around San Marino).
So I suppose the day of a San Marino national team's debut in 7s could be not so far. But it's just my hope, the article didn't say anything about

Nine nations competing in Asia 7s Trophy. I don't remember if it's the debut for Bangladesh
Pool A: Guam, India, Taiwan
Pool B: Philippines, Laos, Qatar
Pool C: South Korea, Indonesia, Bangladesh

The winner should be promoted to Asia 7s Series 2020

Re: Womens 7's rugby - general news
According to a not exhaustive search this should be the first appearance for Bangladesh women.
So this weekend we could have three debuts
- Nauru men XV
- Madagascar women XV
- Bangladesh women 7s

I can confirm its Bangladesh's debut.
Big step up for Qatar too - their 100% 7s record will be under real threat!

Results updated here, even with scorers and lines-up
And Qatar lost the first game...

Apparently Bangladesh has just ten players: five of them are surnamed Akter and three Akther, but maybe it's a "tribe" surname and not a family one
(yes, they seem just ten: https://www.facebook.com/asia.rugby/pho ... =3&theater)

Re: Womens 7's rugby - general news
After the pool phase they will play... an other pool phase. The three first classified (Philippines, India, Indonesia) will form a new pool playing for 1-3 positions, the second classified teams (Korea, Laos, Guam) will play for 4-6 positions, the bottom ones (Taiwan, Qatar and Bangladesh) for 7-9 positions

Re: Womens 7's rugby - general news
Just caught up with this result - quite an upset

Re: Womens 7's rugby - general news
With nine teams its probably the best format. India v Philippines looks like the decider, but who can say after the Indonesia/Korea result. Qatar finding life tough at the next level.Canalina wrote:After the pool phase they will play... an other pool phase. India's Sweety Kumari (age 18) is something special.
Re: Womens 7's rugby - general news
Philippines conquered the promotion to the Asian Series preceding India and Indonesia in the final chart.
Bangladesh finished last (ninth) but conquered a draw against Taiwan. And they started the tournament with ten players instead of twelve, so definitively well done.
Korea finished 4th, Guam 5th, Laos 6th.
Qatar, apparently composed only by "western" players, dominated the bottom pool finishing 7th; Taiwan is 8th, Bangladesh 9th
Akter is the most common surname in Bangladesh, google says. Anyway "just" one person out of ten has it or the variant Akther, while in this rugby team 8 out of 10 players are called so. Google explains also that it's mostly diffused in rural Bangladesh, so this could mean that the players have been picked up in rural lands more than in the big cities

So, this is part of the Olympics Qualy, right? Because of the 8 top division teams, Japan won't need to play the Olympics Qualy, which is a separate tournament.
If this is true, Olympics Qualy would have China, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines, right?

Not Chinese Taipei as they were in the Trophy this week.
Its also the regional championship so Japan could take part.

It's a bit scarey really. On the plus side at least I became interested in women's rugby and not, say, nuclear weapons research...
