2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
World Rugby is choosing the men's WC venue for 2023, but what about the womens WC in 2021? Any news about bids?

Apparently the bid cycle is brief, if you want it, next summer is when all this stuff goes down.

Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
Probably the strongest bid would have been the one from France, but they won the hosting of the men's cup 2023 and now I've read that they will have also the JRWC next year. A women world cup in 2021 would be a bit too much also for a movement on the top of the wave like the french one, I suspect

Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
The eternal optimist in me would like to see a mandatory hosting for women's Rugby World Cup so for 2027 if say as an example South Africa or the USA where to win it is mandatory to host the women's version in 2025.

France also had it in 2014. A bit soon, even for France.

It would only be hosted in England and New Zealand then

On another note I think it's time the WRWC expanded to 16 sides. Some people complain about thrashings but the current format actually excludes betetr teams to include Hong Kong. At the moment there is a gap between the top 3 or 4 and everybody else but the next 6-16 level could be more competitive and have larger interest if the likes of Scotland and Neatherlands joined in who are excluded for lower ranked teams.

Nice idea. The eternal pessimist in me thinks you might have to host it, but you don't have to host it well.

I have always maintained that cutting the WRWC from 16 to 12 teams (and the JWC) were two of the absolutely worst decisions made by the IRB before it became WR. It's high time they reversed both decisions. I just hate the way the 12 team competitions are opened up to the reality of teams missing out on the semis on points difference by being in harder groups, even if all the teams knew the rules before they started. 16 team 4x4 pool events are simple, and transparent in their process of deciding who goes on beyond pool play. If it's a cost issue, do away with the placing games. they've never been a part of the mens RWC and other sports WC (football, basketball etc) don't have placing games for the women or men. At the very least it could be pared back to a knockout plate trophy competition. So with less teams staying the whole duration of the event that could save costs and enable more teams for the pool rounds.
It's honestly about time the NZRFU bid. I think it's absolutely disgusting that a team that has won 5/6 WRWCs since 1998 has not had the opportunity to play a WRWC and win it at home. Quite frankly it's an insult to all the women who have worn the BF jersey in that time. the team started as a mystery - no one knew quite how they would do, and in the 20 years since have enhanced further the reputation of NZ rugby around the world. It's high time the NZRFU paid back the compliment. The NZRFU has rightly come under fire from the public and mainstream media since the Black Ferns won the WRWC in Ireland over their attitude to the team. They got criticised again by a 7s team player at the Sydney tournament for not bidding to have the NZ7s become a double tournament. So maybe it's time Steve Tew and the boys got with the programme on WRWC hosting. Not that I'm holding my breath!
That said, they just became the first union to nominate a woman for union representation on the WR council.

Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
I much agree. Given the women's WRWC was profitable last year and we are seeing record attendances all over women's rugby now the WRWC certainly has scope to expand to 16 teams. It can also keep the place matches (which are important to smaller teams like Hong Kong just to get some fair competition) and cope well.

Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
Hopefully the Super W competition starting this year will serve as a good place to build for Australia hosting the 2021 tournament. I’d like to see 16 teams as well and games held at proper stadiums as opposed to university campuses. We’ve got enough smaller size venues to cater for a women’s World Cup. Host venues could be:
Pool venues
Redfern Oval, Sydney - 5,000
St Mary’s Stadium, West Sydney - 7,000
Perry Park, Brisbane - 4,000
Viking Park, Canberra - 7,000
Finals venues
Ballymore, Brisbane - 18,000
Western Sydney Stadium - 30,000

Rico told me the same after the game.
I don’t know if it’s the only one right now that wants the World Cup

"We have 3 years to form a team for the next World Cup, the 2021 World Cup in Australia"
Seems pretty clear. Either he is mistaken, or he has been told and let it slip out. On balance I suspect the latter, Yunque does not seem the sort of guy to make mistakes.

Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
To my knowledge the bid cycle hasn't even opened yet...and unlike the Men's WC there is limited transparency...usually bids are accepted in June of the following year and announced in August.

Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
Thank christ they've added quarter finals. It's ridiculous you can finish second in the pool and fail to qualify.
Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
I'm so glad there's quarter finals now, but I have to say, I'm disappointed by the loss of the classification rounds. Sure, Japan v Italy isn't a very "sexy" match, but outside of a WC, where are you going to see that?
I really hope they update their qualification criteria and allow Samoa back as well.

Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
They will still be there with 2 or 3 teams advancing from each group.
Awesome news. But 100% amateur nations will struggle to release players from jobs for 40 days. This means a movements towards professionalization i guess.

I am maybe missing something, but where does it say that the classification matches are definitely being dropped?
It would be understandable on pure cost grounds, but if it is true the risk will be that countries outside the Top 8 will be reluctant to enter. They may not be big ticket games, but competing for 9th-12th against teams they'd never normally play will be a big thing for those concerned.
Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
I read on Scrum Queens that the classifications were gone: http://www.scrumqueens.com/news/quarter ... -world-cup
The re-introduction of quarter-finals means that teams that do not make the last eight will leave the tournament and not go forward to play classification games which have been done away with altogether. Quarter-finals were last played at the World Cup in 1998, but were dropped from 2002 to reduce the length of the tournament.
Re: 2021 Womens Rugby World Cup
Oh, now I understood, they droped those 5th to 12th place matches. The groups phase stays.
