2014 Women's Rugby World Cup

Postby rampage » Mon, 21 Jul 2014, 06:53

With tournament due to start at the end of next week, what are everyone's predictions.

Will a team upset the New Zealand-England domination of women's rugby, or can we pen in England and New Zealand for the final on 17 August?

I'd like to talk up the Aussies, but since they have only played 2 tests since the last world cup (heavy defeats to Canada and New Zealand in June this year), I'm not hopeful. The French women could have the making, playing on home soil, of disrupting the established order. The Canadians would also be dark horses.

Ireland are doing very well in these last years, maybe they are not at NZ or England's level but they have the chance to conquer a place in the semifinals

This could be the most interesting and open WRWC for some time. NZ didn't exactly overpower Canada at home and the USA came close to beating England in England as well, not to mention hosts France looking strong. And yes Ireland have a chance for a semi place if not perhaps the main prize.

Don't bury Aussies too quickly ! They didn't play any 15 game since 2010.
Five teams wouldn't be in semifinals (Kazakhstan, SA, Samoa, Spain & Wales) but the 7 others could...

Some match previews for the first round of World Cup games.

New Zealand vs Kazakhstan

Current Rank (serge): 2nd (4720) vs 16th (2620)
Current Rank (grande): 1st (53.70) vs 12th (33.62)

Head To Head

This will be the first time the Kazakhstanis will test themselves against the Black Ferns. Although New Zealand are the clear favourites, these two teams have quite a bit in common. Both teams will be looking to extend their winning streaks (New Zealand coming off 7 straight wins, Kazakhstan with 9), both are fairly active (as far as women's teams go), and both have recently had 90-point victories.

New Zealand's Last Five - WWWWW

June 14: 33-21 vs Canada
June 10: 16-8 vs Canada
June 6: 90-12 vs Samoa
May 31: 38-3 vs Australia

Kazakhstan's Last Five - WWWWW

May 24: 49-17 vs Japan (ARFU 4 Nations)

Current Rank (grande): 3rd (45.56) vs 11th (34.40)

Current Rank (serge): 12th (3583) vs 9th (4098)
Current Rank (grande): 5th (42.74) vs 8th (37.13)

Head To Head

Despite annual competition between their men's sides, these teams have only met up twice before, both times during World Cups, with Australia winning handily each time. This will be a relatively untested Australia side, since they have only played twice since the last World Cup.

Umm, they just played both NZ and Canada in NZ a month ago and were comfortably beaten by both. having said that, yes, aussie teams are known for their ability to learn from earlier games so I expect them to be in the mix at least but i do wonder whether they can make up enough of the ground they were behind in in NZ.

Canada's leading 24-0, and every point has come from Magali Harvey (3 tries, 3 conversions, and a PK). Incredible work by her.

Samoa's already got a red card for a dangerous tackle, just 10 minutes in vs England.

On the other hand, USA vs Ireland has been great. Briggs just extended their lead to 23-17 with 20 minutes remaining.

The referee appears to be giving the Kazakhs a lot of latitude, especially with the grabbing of the halfback at the back of the ruck.

Can't watch any of it as the IRB stream is blocked here.

Wonder if this'll kick off a new bout of anti IRFU whinging on this board now :|

Thanks - I'm a bit wary of installing anything like that though in case of adware etc. Is it safe?
