"Dark future for Spain's women's XVs"

Postby johnbirch » Sat, 30 Aug 2014, 16:49

Reports from Spain (http://rugbyfemenino.com.es/2014/08/oscuro-futuro-del-seleccionado-de-espana-xv/) suggest that they may lose their XVs coach as they have no scheduled test matches in 2015 (or beyond at the moment, come to that).

Despite being Europe's 4th or 5th best team, Spain were removed from the Six Nations four or five years ago because their men's team did not play in the tournament (surely one of the most indefensible decisions ever taken in world sport, never mind rugby). Since then they have relied on friendly games against Six Nations teams, and FIRA (now Rugby Europe) tournaments.

But they have not managed to secure any friendly tests so far in the coming season, and Rugby Europe have not confirmed whether there will be any European XVs tournament in 2015 (2016 should be the European Championship... in theory). With nothing to train for, coach Ines Etxegibel will have nothing to aim for (and probably no funding), and if that remains the case has not made no secret of her intentions to leave.

Is there no demand / interest in a "Women's ENC" or some such thing? A second division European tournament?

Technically it exists already as the Womens' European Trophy, but Spain are too far ahead of the rest at the moment ( arguably Scotland are weaker at the moment! )

I don't think there is any argument about it. Spain are also probably ahead of Italy and the great regret about the WRWC is that they never got to play Wales - that would have been interesting!

But with no meaningful XVs how long can they stay strong?
