OFFICIAL Women's Rugby Rankings

Postby grande » Thu, 08 Jan 2015, 00:30

So, reddit user rawling recently pointed out that, on the new World Rugby website, rankings are being pulled from a third-party site as a JSON feed which you can see here. The really interesting thing about this is they also have a raking for women's teams.

Don't want to read through JSON? Don't worry, I've got ya covered.

1. England (60.69)
2. New Zealand (59.11)
3. Canada (56.10)

Thanks Grande, this is very interesting! The WR website has a "World Rankings" section with a men's sub-section, this leading to suppose that they are mumbling to publish also women's rankings. Somewhen. I wonder why they keep still unpublished these rankings. Because there are still too few nations in it?

According to a rapid calculation, the total of the points of the 33 teams should be around 990; so they probably gave 30 points to each nations and then started to calculate the rankings variations. It would be interesting to know how much in the past they go, id est how much old results they used.

Yes, I agree that they're starting people with 30 (same as the men, if memory serves).

I dug a bit deeper last night and discovered an API that includes all fixtures going back to the England vs Scotland match at Raeburn (although the earliest twenty or so matches don't have any scores listed for some reason). I'd imagine that the women's matches are also included.

They label all the games (eg, "2011 World Cup", "1995 English Tour of New Zealand," etc), and I want to see how they label the first (extremely unofficial) Women's World Cup, and if it's even included at all.

This is probably because, until 1886, there was no points system - the winner was the team that scored the most goals (ie. converted tries). If goals were equal the most tries decided the winner.

World Rugby/IRB effectively accepted the first two World Cups as being official in 2010 - and statistics issued to the press etc. included the 1991 and 1994 events. At the same time New Zealand also started to accept all of the games played by the New Zealand women's team before they came under the NZRU. France did likewise at around the same time.

There were no fanfares or official announcements.

World Rugby is in the process of coming up with an official women's rankings according to a letter sent to URU yesterday. I suspect other unions received the same letter. Here is part of the letter.

"World Rugby is in the process of developing a Women’s Fifteens World Ranking System. As part of that process we need to ensure that our data base information concerning historical Women’s Fifteens international results is accurate.
Please find enclosed with this letter all the international results of your Women’s fifteens national team that we have in our database.
I would be grateful if you could nominate a member of your staff to review the results and confirm whether the information is accurate."

In that case it will be interesting to see if the NZ v France "3rd place" game from the 1991WRWC that has never been acknowledged in NZ but is listed in French records will be included or not.

YK - that is the least of the disputed matches... I reckon there are at least 30-50 matches where unions could disagree - like pretty much any game played by England in any European championship prior to 2011, or the games against Scottish Students in the 1994 WC, or any games played by New Zealand or France (or several other unions) before they joined their respective men's unions. or...

Mind you this assumes the unions have lists and care!

So, I went to check out how the Women's Six Nations had affected the rankings and, to my surprise, there were a tonne of changes, a lot of which involved countries that hadn't played in ages, and 17 countries that weren't listed before.

1. New Zealand (60.83, +1)
2. England (58.83, -1)
3. France (57.97, +1)
4. Canada (57.56, -1)
5. Ireland (54.32)
6. Australia (52.09)
7. USA (51.46)
8. Spain (48.74, +1)
9. Wales (47.51, -1)
10. Italy (45.11, +1)
11. Samoa (41.38, +3)
12. South Africa (41.12, -2)
13. Scotland (36.70)
14. Kazakhstan (35.86, -2)
15. Netherlands (34.73, +3)
16. Kenya (32.17, +6)
17. Japan (31.55, -1)
18. Sweden (30.80, -3)
19. Russia (29.49, +2)
20. Uganda (27.82, +9)
21. Hong Kong (27.36, -2)
22. Switzerland (25.90, -2)
23. China (25.41, +4)
24. Germany (25.33)
25. Belgium (25.26, -2)
26. Trinidad & Tobago (22.75, -9)
27. Singapore (20.03, +1)
28. Thailand (19.01, -4)
29. Uzbekistan (19)
30. Romania (18.89)
31. Norway (17.55)
32. Fiji (16.95)
32. Zambia (16.95)
34. Malaysia (16.81)
35. Guyana (16.35)[/i]
36. Jamaica (15.36, -11)
37. Brazil (15)
37. Portugal (15)

39. Czech Republic (14.78, -7)
40. Luxembourg (13.79)
41. Philippines (13.62, -15)
42. Finland (13.57, -9)
43. Denmark (13.14)
44. Tonga (13.05)
44. Zimbabwe (13.05)
46. Barbados (12.71)
47. Serbia (12.39)
48. Bosnia & Herzegovina (11.95)

49. Cayman Islands (11.58, -18)
50. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (11.24)

Some of these countries haven't played in years (eg, Germany, most of the Caribbean teams), and many have only played one or two times (eg, Zimbabwe, Tonga).

Uganda benefitted most from the re-alignment, moving up nine positions, and the Philippines suffered hardest, falling 18.

I'll try and keep this updated during the upcoming Asian 3 Nations.

Grande - what I think all this seems to show is that this is a work in progress, that World Rugby are experimenting and fiddling and tweaking the rankings so that as far as possible following the same criteria as men's but maybe with some adaptions to take into account the different nature of the women's game (like fewer tests, and the increased importance of games involving A teams). Clearly it is not the final thing yet.

The extra teams suggests to me that the first ranking was maybe produced without all the results being entered onto their database, for example.

It may well be that later versions see "older" results or teams that play fewer games will be give given less prominence - but they will have to be careful as that would impact severely on some top teams like Australia & New Zealand!

Overall I think they are getting there. The new version is obviously better then the first one - there is a more sensible ranking for Trinidad for example. But there is still work to be done.

Yep, I think you hit the nail on the head, johnbirch. I'd imagine once they're "done," they'll release an official ranking on the site. I'm just doing this out of curiosity more than anything.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly they update with the upcoming Asian Women's tournament.

I don't know how they can rank the Caribbean teams when they haven't played against any of the other teams on the ranking (other than other Caribbean teams). It's not a good idea to rank a team in this way. You can't say anything about a team's strength relative to other teams until they have played at least one of those teams.

The only teams from outside the Caribbean played by any team from the Caribbean have been Canada U-20 and USA U-20.

Well, Brazil played just one official match, against the Netherlands. There is no Women's XVs at all. Zero.

I heard World Rugby is preparing a Women's XVs ranking... does anyone knows anything?

48. Czech Republic (28.70, -9)

Of note:
Bahamas have been added.
Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malaysia have been removed.

Based on what you said, victorsra, since Brazil is at 38 points, I'm guessing they start women's teams at 40 and use the same scoring as men.

I just can't find a logic in that
Bosnia&Herzegovina, for example, played barely four matches in its history according to http://pastebin.com/b1fdKcey and lost all the four without scoring a point. And those matches were probably on halved time because they played two games in a day. Despite this, Bosnia is in a relatively good position and apparently have gained 27 places since the penultimate update!
Switzerland played ten games winning six, and it is behind Bosnia&Herz.
Kenya and Uganda have played only between each other in the last years, how can have they both lost more than a dozen positions in this last update?
Czech Rep. has a decent record of a draw and three losses in four matches, why is it so desperately at the bottom?

Side note: I hadn't realized that there were so many nations once playing XV and now not playing anymore. Samoa, Tonga, Austria, Rwanda, Bosnia, Denmark, Thailand, Jamaica, Guyana, Romania, Luxembourg, China and others… all played at least one time, mostly in the decade between 2000 and 2010. Now they've completely disappeared in XV's radar. A bad side effect of the growth of 7s, I suppose

There are certainly some really odd things happening in what is clearly still a work in progress - Trinidad rising four places despite not having played for years is one that leapt out to me!

That said I think they are getting closer to something workable. Certainly down to about 21st place its hard to argue with it.

I opened one of the links posted by Grande in the first post (the link "raking for women's teams") and it's interesting because on my pc it gives a semi-illegible list containing, yet, the number of played matches. So, with much patience, we may see if their list corresponds with that of wikipedia

To note that Bosnia has 0 games but it is anyway in the list. This suggests that they are "cleaning" the data, expelling the matches not fulfilling the international criteria. Probably Bosnia was originally in the rankings with some matches played; then the "cleaners" cancelled its matches (played probably on reduced time) but for some reasons Bosnia remained in the list.

Made a confront between the various list of games (wikipedia, world rugby, paste bin), after having depurated the pastebin list by all the matches involving at least a team named "A", "Army", "XV", "Students", "Exiles" or "Barbarians", and the games involving Catalonia. There are many -even if not enormous- discrepancies. Some of these discrepancies, those involving minor teams, suggest that World Rugby is not counting for the rankings these matches:
522. 2005-02-25: Rwanda 0-92 Uganda
534. 2005-04-20: Norway 0-25 Russia
535. 2005-04-20: Bosnia & Herzegovina 0-74 Russia
536. 2005-04-20: Bosnia & Herzegovina 0-30 Norway
537. 2005-04-22: Norway 0-49 Russia
538. 2005-04-22: Bosnia & Herzegovina 0-65 Russia
539. 2005-04-22: Bosnia & Herzegovina 0-22 Norway
541. 2005-04-29: Austria 5-5 Czech Republic
559. 2005-12-09: Uganda 81-0 Rwanda
752. 2008-06-02: Kyrgyzstan 0-38 Singapore
756. 2008-06-04: Hong Kong 34-0 Kyrgyzstan
758. 2008-06-06: Hong Kong 49-0 Kyrgyzstan
856. 2010-04-16: Singapore 5-10 Malaysia
914. 2010-10-17: Laos 12-5 Thailand (2010 Women's Asian Rugby Championship, Division 2)
915. 2010-10-17: Philippines 5-5 Laos (2010 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
916. 2010-10-17: Philippines 5-0 Thailand (2010 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
954. 2011-07-10: Trinidad & Tobago 92-0 Caribbean Selects (2011 Women.s NACRA)
957. 2011-07-12: Caribbean Selects 12-27 Cayman Islands (2011 Women.s NACRA)
958. 2011-07-14: Jamaica 44-13 Caribbean Selects (2011 Women.s NACRA)
974. 2011-11-23: Philippines 0-36 China (2011 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
975. 2011-11-23: Laos 0-38 Thailand (2011 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
976. 2011-11-24: Laos 0-66 China (2011 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
977. 2011-11-24: Philippines 0-39 Thailand (2011 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
978. 2011-11-25: China 38-0 Thailand (2011 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
979. 2011-11-25: Philippines 20-12 Laos (2011 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
1012. 2012-06-14: Singapore 74-0 Laos (2012 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
1013. 2012-06-14: Philippines 15-50 Thailand (2012 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)*
1014. 2012-06-16: Philippines 55-0 Laos (2012 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)
1015. 2012-06-16: Singapore 21-19 Thailand (2012 Women's Asian Rugby Championship)*
1082. 2013-10-18: Namibia 31-10 Botswana (2013 Women's Internationals)

* not sure if they are counting or not these two matches

Some of the games of this list have been played on reduced time, some are registered on the wikipedia list as played between Development teams or between teams marked with "A"; some others (like 2013's Namibia v Botswana or 2005's Austria v Czech) are for some unknown reason not considered by WR

There are larger discrepancies on the data of the big teams (England, France et cetera; except Wales for which the data of World Rugby and Pastebin give a concordant number of 168 games played), but the origin of them is much more difficult to find.

Re: OFFICIAL Women's Rugby Rankings

Large number of Asian games in there, which is odd especially as these were in recognised tournaments run by Rugby Asia.
Austria v Czech Republic also a surprise being as there are pictures of the game, and AFAIK the Czech certainly recognise it - the problem is that the score is disputed (5-5 or 7-7).

Odd if France is disputing anything as I thought their list, which appeared on the old FFR website, was well agreed (apart from the game against New Zealand in 1991)

Not too surprised elsewhere, and I'd bet that England are saying "no" to all of the Euro Champ games where they sent an A team - but still played as "England" (NOT England A). Fact is that all their opponents count these games as tests, as did FIRA, which is possibly why we have this long delay.

If they really want to create a women's ranking, they should consider just the results of the last ten years; or last five years. Too difficult to collect all the scores of the history and discover if those games were filling all the international criteria.
And if, six months after you have inaugurated a women's ranking, you discover an other old match? Will you correct all the weekly rankings already published? Better to choice a simpler and safer way and to use just the scores of the years about which you are sure to have all the data. Also because the scores of twelve years ago can't say nothing about today's strength of a nation, and it would be meaningless to have in the rankings nations not playing since many years ago.

Another test matches list, unfortunately abandoned five years ago http://www.rugbyfootballhistory.com/wom ... ionals.htm
It's very similar to the wikipedia's one but apparently with some little differences

The number of international matches seem declining slowly but quite evidently. Let's confront the last two cycles of four years on the pastebin list:
2008, 72; 2012, 48
2009, 63; 2013, 57
2010, 81; 2014, 75
2011, 66; 2015, 30 as far as now

Maybe also the short number of matches and of nations currently involved in them is holding WR by publish the rankings

This is definitely incorrect.

Kenya matches 21 pts 44.35255 pos 30
Uganda matches 22 pts 39.64745 pos 38

Uganda and Kenya have played each other 20 times and Kenya has not played any other country. Uganda on the other hand has played Rwanda twice and South Africa once therefore has played 23 games in total. Or if the matches this year are excluded then Uganda and Kenya have played each other 18 times therefore Uganda has a total of 21 matches. How then Kenya has played one more match than Uganda beats my understanding.

Total number of wins, losses and draws:

Uganda - 10 wins, 11 losses, 2 draws
Kenya - 10 wins, 9 losses, 2 draws

EDIT: How Kenya has played one LESS match ...

Apparently the two matches between Uganda and Rwanda are not counted by the supposed World Rugby list, Rwanda in fact doesn't appear at all in it. In wikipedia, those matches are signed as Uganda XV v Rwanda XV.
So they would remain 21 matches for Uganda and 20 for Kenya, while WR list has 22 Uga and 21 Ken. It's like they knew one more match played between the two countries, one match we are not aware of
