Thanks @Armchair for these infos on the Spanish Rugby.
I'm pretty interested on it, I'm on the Barça side BTW.
I've noted on the FER Tables that Barça has not been awarded with any bonus point [usually fo matches where teams mark 4 or more tries] while Bathco got the difensive bonus, and Cencias too when they beat Hernani.
Is there another different rule for the offensive bonus point?
Thanks

Yes, FER adopted this season French/Rugby Europe bonus system, meaning you have to score three more tries than opposition.

And great to know you follow our league, thanks!

División de Honor 2019-20 - Week 2 - Results and Standings
Bathco Rugby Club 28 - 33 Barça Rugbi (great start by Barça, which will visit VRAC this weekend)
Hernani 20 - 21 Complutense Cisneros (Cisneros, tipped to be relegated this season starts with two wins and lots of U20 players involved)
UE Santboiana 23 - 22 VRAC Quesos Entrepinares (two visits by Valladolid clubs to Catalonia, two defeats)
SilverStorm El Salvador 38 - 5 Ciencias Cajasol Olavide (no game)
Lexus Alcobendas 34 - 28 Ampo Ordizia
UBU-Colina Clinic 17 - 28 Aldro Independiente

National team has met for the first time this season at Sant Cugat:

As last year, the intention is to hold these mini-training camps once every month. Even though many players are uncapped, it's not the first time they are called for these. The only real novelties are a couple of French-born guys in the backs, Ivan Kitutu and Thomas Gauci. Worth noting that Jesús Moreno and Juandré Kleynhans are in despite playing in División de Honor B this season.

--

Jaime Nava, who had previously announced his professional retirement, will keep playing in Madrid regional league with Alcalá, a historical smaller club who has given quite a few players to national teams in recent times like Mateu bros, López Bontempo bros or Londoño (all foreign born, by the way. That's the demographics of Madrid peripheria):

División de Honor 2019-20 - Week 3 - Results and Standings
UE Santboiana 43 - 26 UBU-Colina Clinic (Burgos only caught up late, horrible start of the season for them)
Ampo Ordizia 66 - 14 Hernani (it's crystal clear Hernani will fall this season)
Complutense Cisneros 21 - 33 SilverStorm El Salvador (Cisneros managed bad the last minutes, it could have easily clinched at least the bonus)
VRAC Quesos Entrepinares 40 - 20 Barça Rugbi (underwhelming performance by Barça in Valladolid)
Ciencias Cajasol Olavide 20 - 19 Bathco Rugby Club (3-19 at minute 65, but Bathco had a meltdown)
Aldro Independiente 20 - 27 Lexus Alcobendas (Alcobendas qualifies for Copa del Rey semifinals)

U20 and U18 national teams are holding training camps next week.

Clubs association president gave an interview on their goals and it wasn't particularly reassuring. Among other things he says they don't intend to start a league on their own, that this is just a menace so FER sits down with them. It is equally reminded in the article that Sports Law as it is doesn't allow a professional league without clubs being converted into limited companies... Sports Law from 1990 should be replaced soon, but as I'm sure you all know Spain hasn't had a stable government for the past two years, so it is hard to pass the new one.

Define soon and pro league :D

What is clear is that clubs won't cut ties to FER and pro league will only happen through the development of already existing Division de Honor. Which was something to be expected anyway. But I'm more and more negatively impressed by clubs inability to make steps forward.

Anyway knowing that former El Salvador president will challenge Feijoo in 2020 elections clubs may be just waiting for a more favorable partner.

Soon : in one or two season
Pro : well, what is a pro league. All players having a contract of rugby player.

Thx for explanation !
In fact I find this good that FER & clubs try to work together. Trust me, you don't want the relationship there's in France, with clubs feeling more powerful than federation, and which doesn't really care about NT...

This is basically the relationship they have here right now, but without money. Don't forget we learnt our rugby from France, not England. You are our mirror...

División de Honor - Week 4 - Results and Standings
SilverStorm El Salvador 36 - 35 Ampo Ordizia (buzzerbeater win for El Salvador to become new leader)
UBU-Colina Clinic 17 - 31 VRAC Quesos Entrepinares (much improved performance by Burgos but not enough to clinch their first point of the season)
Lexus Alcobendas 46 - 22 UE Santboiana (first defeat of the season for Sant Boi, falling from 1st and sole undefeated team to 5th)
Barça Rugbi 29 - 0 Ciencias Cajasol Olavide
Aldro Independiente 21 - 20 Hernani
Bathco Rugby Club 33 - 0 Complutense Cisneros (clear first win in a game that had to be relocated as the field wasn't in proper conditions)

Image

Great to see all entrants have lost at least one match in just four rounds, a further improvement from last season where at least they had drawn a game. We usually had undefeated teams way into the season. Anyway the doubt remains on whether Valladolid clubs are up to the level everybody expects them to be. VRAC looked ugly in three of their four games so far and El Salvador seems to be messy in the backs.

The league takes now a break (Supercup used to take place in this bank holiday weekend), so in the coming days I'll give some details on how the U23/Reserves league has started and early promotion contenders from DHB.

Competicición Nacional Sub 23 / B - After Round 4
Image

UE Santboiana leads as the only unbeaten team in this newly created competition. It is no surprise that the top half is dominated by the five teams who already enjoyed B teams in División de Honor B until last year (Santboiana, El Salvador, VRAC, Alcobendas and Cisneros) with the exception of Barça Rugbi. But even this is explanable: Barça are Catalan champions but couldn't to earn promotion because amateur sections internal regulations of FC Barcelona didn't allow them to.

Cisneros, Hernani and Ciencias are maybe underperforming a bit, but one must take into account they need their top young guys in the first team (Cisneros has fielded as many as 5 guys from last year's U18 national team in the same División de Honor game) and it is a long way from Sevilla for most Ciencias away games.

There were big fears about Burgos, Independiente and Bathco. I didn't share those about Burgos because they've been doing a decent job to grow in recent times, while Santander clubs results just reflect the reality of their projects, based on hiring good foreigners in the hope this will draw attention, but with little grounding right now. Bathco was denounced last two season because rival clubs thought they weren't respecting requirements regarding U18 and U16, so it is already a miracle they showed up to every single game... The fact they didn't score a single point doesn't even matter.

The best news is that the competition is ongoing, whatever the naysayers claim. We may have hard weeks, especially when the league clashes with exams. But it was important to see it start so doubts were dissipated. I can see what FER tried to do when forcing to make it a sort of U23 league. They move young players from regional leagues, closer to social rugby, to a more professional environment, with better habits. And they are making the most of these teams beyond the competition, as El Salvador and Alcobendas U23 teams are used this week as sparrings for U20 and U18 national teams.

FER and Clubs Association have met today in Madrid, although among the latter representatives there were no VRAC members: https://bit.ly/2nyhcT1

FER claims in its press release that discussions were friendly, that both sides want to reach an agreement that helps Spanish rugby and the association says they don't want to judicialise the conflict... even though it already is in what regards VRAC, Heineken and FER.

Clubs association says it is writing an agreement proposal that will be sent to FER in the coming weeks. Feijóo accepts FER will have to yield some of its current rights but wants financial compensations.

El Salvador president wants to try to find a TV deal for this very same season, but Feijóo prefers to talk about that once they have found an overall agreement.

Zamora and Burgos have shown interest in hosting 2020 Copa del Rey final. It would be in their football stadiums, for 8,000 and 12,000 spectators each.

Spain U20 training game against Alcobendas U23 will be streamed this evening (20:20 CEST):

Clubs association has formally requested to promote the league. FER would still have his say on refereeing and sporting legal matters. They have also requested more clarity on national team players:

What is the ownership of the Spanish clubs? Is there any private ownership or are they all member owned socios?

Good question. The latter. And law as it currently is would force them to become Sociedad Anónima Deportiva like football or basketball clubs to become pro. But a new national sports law is awaiting an approval, maybe after November general elections.

Interesting, thanks. I don't think the Spanish clubs can truly go pro without more external investment (excluding sponsors etc). Whilst the member owned model is financially stable, unless you have decent revenues then you're kind of spinning your wheels since rugby isn't that popular yet.

Edit: the members are the ones who seem to be blocking progress as well, just like in Argentina.

I don't think it's like in Argentina. Very few clubs here own their club houses, so clubs must remain open to exterior. We are a country currently receiving more immigrants and therefore the mentality is different. I'm not able to name more than four or five 100% strict amateur teams in national divisions.

Under member owned model revenues are increasing, it's the internal organisation what must keep improving.

I mean more in terms of ownership of the clubs and reluctance to change. If outside investors came in such as local businesses, or benefactors it could help speed up things in terms of developing professionalism.
