The question is if Pichot gets the top job what his goals are. We know he wants the game to expand by the Nations League, which he was a big proponent of, failed. So he's going to need a different vision.

Midi Olympique reports that Laporte is now in the running to be the vice-chair of Bill Beaumont. And they claim they have enough votes to win: Six Nations (18), USA (1), Canada (1), Japan (2), Asia (2) and Africa (2). That French Barbarian tour is starting to make sense now…

I have mixed feelings. It is immensely satisfying to see Pichot crash. However, there can’t be a more regressive ticket than Beaumont/Laporte.

That's catastrophic news. I don't see anybody else with even the slightest chance or will to change things. Could you please remind me, why you don't like Pichot?

I could write an essay but the gist of it is basically:

1) Pichot did great things for local rugby but all those breakthroughs coincided with the growth of his personal wealth. The business opportunities that came with professionalism were exploited directly by him or his friends: TV production, player representation, hospitality packages, travel agencies, sponsorship, etc.

2) He regularly employs friends in key positions. Now that the UAR is in flux, he claims that he doesn't have any say in day-to-day affairs. However, the board is controlled by his cronies: the president is a partner in his mining endeavors, the secretary works for his production company, Ledesma is a childhood friend, etc. Another one of his buddies, Santiago Phelan, got the Pumas job without any prior head coaching experience. Sudamerica Rugby’s Sebastián Piñeyrúa is also his friend and business partner.

3) ESPN and Fox Sports have been outsourcing production jobs into his company PEGSA. That move resulted in hundreds of layoffs in the industry. PEGSA offered some of those jobs back with less pay, less benefits and without respecting seniority.

4) We are almost four years into his tenure and he doesn’t have much to show for. Maybe the SF agreement, the extension of the residency rule and Uruguay’s rise could be attributed to him. Then it is more of the same. A tad better than Beaumont/Laport but not by much.

Carbonero : ¿is SCRUM one of the TV programs outsorced to PEGSA? Although the had an excellent analysis during the RWC coverage because they have outstanding analysts (Albanese, Lassala, Simone, Devedia) i missed a minimum selfcritic respect the Pumas performance. The only open criticism i heard, was from Gonzalez Amorosino who was a guest but not a stable member.

Yeah, PEGSA has been producing all the rugby related content for ESPN Cono Sur in the last decade. Everybody feels that they are gun shy to criticize the UAR. Even the players are sometimes uncomfortable with that relationship. Nico Sanchez took a swing at them last week when Scrum questioned Matera’s captaincy.

The marriage with ESPN has some advantages. Most countries would dream for this wall-to-wall coverage. Also, I don’t think that Jaguares could exist without the support of ESPN. The same goes for competitions like the ARC.

PS: ESPN just bought the Sevens Series for the region. There will be legal streams for the first time ever.

There's an awful lot to criticise Pichot for, including his tweeting. But he is vastly better than Laporte.

While he does financially benefit from growing rugby in South America, that's not exactly a bad by-product of him becoming more wealthy.

Fair points raised. I also don't like some of his more populistic twitter posts.
Thing is I believe, this might be the only thing how he could bring rugby in the Americas forward. Wasn't Argentina a deeply amateur union, before he took over? We all know the side affects of rugby's amateurish side and you need a close network to change things. As long as the sport grows, I think it is alright that he profits from it as well.
The British have their networks, too. The only difference being, that they only let guys in with the "right" background from the start in their circles. If Pichot choses people on their talents (in his opinion) that's okay.
