So far

what's your opinion?
It's seems to me that the only difference between last season are Santboiana and Barça [nice drop at the last minute] performing better.
I mean, just 5 turns, but it is approximately 1/4 of the season and except the first 3 spots, it is a challenged season, doesn't it?

Thanks for your stream links!!!

You're welcome as always.

Yes, it's a nicely disputed season with lots of close scores, but let's not forget this is a semipro league and that implies lots of things...

First of all, squads may still change a lot until April and May, when titles are at stake. Market closes in mid-January, so some teams still have margin to metamorphose, especially if their financial resources allow them to tweak what hasn't worked so far (everybody assumes UBU-Colina Clinic will wake up sooner or later; El Salvador's kiwi scrum-half hasn't even debuted due to concussion and they are looking for another one; VRAC will probably fish something when Southern Hemisphere leagues are over...).

Then, home factor has an important weight as well. Santboiana and Barça beat Valladolid teams at home and I'm nobody to diminish such an exploit, but to win the league you need to be able to win in Valladolid. Barça achieved that last season, they weren't even close this year. Let's see what Sant Boi is capable of this weekend against El Salvador.

My and many others' dark horse is Ordizia. They were so close a fortnight ago to beat El Salvador at home, their foreigners are good and mostly know each other, they've been regularly in the Top 6 and they will play less games than others since they are already out of contention in Copa del Rey. Alcobendas seems stuck in that 3rd spot and even in their best days they play quite ugly. Ordizia or Barça are capable of brighter periods of excellence needed to shock VRAC and El Salvador.

In the 24 hours after the last post UBU-Colina Clinic announced two new players (Tomás Carrió, who was rejected by El Salvador earlier in preseason, and Ikapote Tupai) and SilverStorm El Salvador his replacement scrum-half (Raniera Takarangi)...

División de Honor 2019-20 - Week 6 - Results and Standings
Lexus Alcobendas 31 - 33 VRAC Quesos Entrepinares (a controversial penalty gave Valladolid team the edge in a close game)
SilverStorm El Salvador 44 - 11 UE Santboiana (no show by the Catalans, allowing El Salvador to become new leaders)
Barça Rugbi 25 - 25 Ampo Ordizia (Barça played without their fly-half Bautista Guema and only was able to rescue a draw with a late try)
Bathco Rugby Club 20 - 30 Aldro Independiente (close Santander derby but expected result)
Ciencias Cajasol Olavide 28 - 15 Complutense Cisneros (Ciencias remains unbeaten at home, although it hosted three direct rivals so far)
Hernani 24 - 30 UBU-Colina Clinic (locals made a comeback from 3-20 to 24-23 but in the end Burgos clinches its first win of the season)

Sorry if somebody was expecting live streaming to be posted here, but my focus was on women's test match. Normal service will resume next weekend. In just a couple of rounds Catalan clubs have slowed down their pace and left top of the table right like it finished last season. At least all games are pretty competitive and next round will be a cracker, including a Catalan derby, El Salvador v Alcobendas or Bathco v UBU-Colina Clinic right before the international break.

Zona de MARCA, Radio MARCA Valladolid's weekly radio show, conducted last Monday their annual interview to El Salvador president, Santi Toca:
- Club budget for this season nears 1 M€ (from circa 850,000€ last season)
- The part dedicated to first senior men's team is still around 40%
- He claims they are still nowhere near the money spent in the first team in 2008, 2009, before financial crisis hit them hard. Those were the years when they played Challenge Cup.
- They've got the suspicion that neither them nor VRAC have the biggest budgets in División de Honor, at least regarding only first team expenses
- No player in the squad earns 3,000€ per month, even though deals include housing and side jobs like teaching English

Apparently Old Glory DC in MLR signed a Spanish player who went to Cal Berkeley. He represented Spain at u16-u18.

Unfortunately I fear he is no longer eligible as he 'only' spent six years in Sitges and he would need to reach the ten non-consecutive years now. I hope not, but... Thanks anyway.

Interesting, it says he’s originally from Barcelona but I trust your info is more accurate. His name isn’t very Spanish either so I wonder where he’s from.

Let's see, maybe he spent some time there before he started playing rugby. Anyway I'd be surprised if he's been overlooked given he was part of underage national teams.

Two uncapped additions to Spanish squad for Occitanie: Nico Nieto (French-born centre in Aldro Independiente) and Ike Irusta (Spain U20 scrum-half in Cisneros).

I must say I'm surprised by Irusta addition. We've got plenty of scrumhalves and I really thought we wouldn't disturb U20 players given the huge calendar they will face this season.

The problem is everywhere it says hometown, not birthplace. That's why I'm not 100% convinced.

Apart from that, let's see how much he plays and how good he is. Given other foreign signings I've got the impression MLR is hiring some not so good players just to stuff squads. Not saying it's his case, I hope he shines, but I've got reasonable doubts about the current standards of MLR beyond the few stars and USA, Canada and Uruguay internationals.

If it helps his pedigree at all, he was a standout at Cal and a nominee for the Rudy Scholz award which is given to the best college rugby player. Haven’t seen him at all but those are both good signs for his future.

I did a quick search and it says he went to the British School of Barcelona. I watched an interview with him and he definitely has some sort of a British accent, so I think he may be English but lived in Barcelona as a teenager.

That’s a beautiful location and good size for rugby. Is it really only a 7800 seater?

Have there been rugby matches here before? Seems like a good sized stadium for Spanish National team.

Not that I know. Zamora is one of the less inhabited provinces in one of the most scarcely populated regions in Spain and not really well connected. The location is good because it's one hour away from Valladolid and their soccer team is only in fourth division but the venue was opened in 2002, so they need activity to justify it. Many will make the trip for the final. But I find hard it could become a usual spot for Spanish rugby.

Palencia successfully hosted 2012 & 2014 Copa del Rey finals in similar conditions. Brand new 8,100 seat stadium in a tiny city near Valladolid whose football club isn't too powerful... Unfortunately Spain has never played there.
