Youth Internationals
Thought I would open this thread to cover all the U-19 level international matches that are played worldwide. I know in another thread there were mentioned games between Romania and Scotland that were played recently and there are Africa CUp U-19 games due this week, so this thread is a catch all for all of that.
The last week in South Africa there has been a series of youth internationals involving Italy, Wales, France, England and South Africa. This is played every year now and has been played over the last 3 years or so. The Italians play provincial or Academy sides and the other 4 play each other over 3 match days. Some interesting results this year.
Match day 1 15/08/14
England U18 24 - 21 Wales U18
SA Schools 28 - 13 France U18
Western Prov U18 XV 45 - 12 Italy U18
Match day 2 19/08/14
SA Schools 40 - 15 Wales U18
England U18 23 - 6 France U18
SWD Craven Week XV 21 - 38 Italy U18
Match day 3 23/08/14
SA Schools 22 - 30 England U18
France U18 9 - 10 Wales U18
SARU Academy XV 48 - 29 Italy U18

Kenya v Zimbabwe 27-20 in the first CAR U19 semifinal, hosted in Windhoek
In CAR U19 B, starting tomorrow in Kampala, Senegal rejoined the group (Uganda, Madagascar, Zambia) after an early ban; the ugandan health minister was worried by the erupting of ebola in western Africa, but evidently the senegalese staff must have managed to assure them
Second CAR U19 A semifinal: Namibia v Tunisia 78-3

Re: Youth Internationals
Good result for Georgia, we played a good game against Canada last season and out lasted them fitness wise to end up with a decent win. Previous wins have come against England, Scotland and Wales so a very tidy result for Georgia.
From a Tigers perspective it does raise further question marks over the quality of our own youth. Looking at the photo in the GeoRugby's link Oli Bryant must have been captain there, he played in recent Prem 7s series and made an appearance in loss to Nottingham last week.

Re: Youth Internationals
Good result for Georgia there, bad result for Zimbabwe, the focus on the senior side has affected the junior side by the looks of things.

The final: At Half-Time Clermont U20 is leading Georgia U19 15-10.
Due to some technical difficulties the tournament organizers haven`t been able to send GRU video from the first match. They are promising to send the video in a few days.

Re: Youth Internationals
Very nice result for Georgia!
Re: Youth Internationals
Georgia certainly appears to be the most promising of the up-and-coming nations on the rugby landscape, though when I look at the number of registered players there, 6,700, I see that this is a few hundred less than Sweden and only half as many as Poland. Could that be accurate? In any case, I'm sure that, if they can get more regular fixtures against tier 1 nations, the Lelos could very well be rugby's next addition to the heavyweight ranks; perhaps just a decade or so in the future...
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, then why not in between?

I wouldnt read too much into those figures Rowan. Some Nations fail to accurately upsdate their statistics, and other Nations flat out Out twist the truth. Japan are said to have over 150,000 players, but I think they are counting anyone that has had any sort of rugby exposure, (i.e p.e lessons etc.)

Re: Youth Internationals
Adamstown, I would assume that figure for Japan isn't one of the most inaccurate estimates of playing numbers for a very big country where rugby has a particularly big university playing scene.
The IRB estimate of 1.4 million rugby players in the US on the other hand...

Re: Youth Internationals
Having lived in the place I sincerely doubt there's that many players though Japan would still have one of the biggest rugby populations. Though in Japan anyone playing has to be registered and pay fees to the local union so there's no reason why there shouldn't be an accurate number. However there's significantly less players now than there was at the highpoint of Japanese rugby in the mid 80s. So many high schools in particular no longer have a rugby club or even if they do often play together with other schools as they don't have enough players. If you ever look at the regional champs for Tokyo or Osaka for example, you'll see about a fifth of the teams in the draws these days are combos. Eg out of about the 80 odd teams in the Tokyo champs, about 15-16 encompassing about another 50+ schools are combos. Some combos are even made up of students from 4-5 schools! There might even be only 1 or 2 players from one of those schools!
Also in the prefecture I lived in the first time there were 20 odd senior clubs incl uni teams (granted again some of them hardly ever played and or had to play as combos) the first time round yet when I checked 10 years later there were only about 6 left. in my own part of the prefecture, where there had been about four teams loosely built around corporate factories eg Fuji Xerox , Ricoh copiers, Toshiba machinery etc not including a local teriary college, that had become one combined team as the teams at the various factories faltered through declining numbers.

Re: Youth Internationals
When does the under 17 european tournament begin to see who qualifys to join the 6 nations teams in the under 18 Euros next year. The under 17s qualifying is usually held in October every year.

Yes, http://www.rugbyeurope.eu/group-195.htm
PS: It's strange to see Romania listed in the qualification for Justin Bridou Trophy. I believe it's again a mistake on RE site - based on the results from this year's competition, it should have been Spain. On the FRR website there is no mention of any U17/U18 preparation, but there is one for the Romanian U19.

Re: Youth Internationals
Holland beat Poland and Belgium beat Romania, so I think Poland and Romania have to play each other to stay up. Does any one know for sure if there is demotion from this league?
