Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
Funny. Obviously this is not good for the clubs. But, if the RWC had 24 teams in 6 groups of 4, there wouldn't be any need of more dates.... funny, realy funny.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
There is a certain irony to this.
Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
Irony confirmed

But look, it won't affect the clubs calendar. It still ends in the end of October. It will only start earlier. Maybe less vacation days for players? Or less warm-up days for national teams?

Another irony. I realy thought they would choose UK for 2023 exactly because of this. But they prefered France with no mentions to the "200th anniversary" AFAIR.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
I think this irony will help the 24-teams cause. It will be clear it is the best way. A 24-teams RWC would have one week less.
However, it also opens the possibility of that system with a 2nd phase like 1982 FIFA WC, with 4 groups of 12. This would mean only 12 teams advancing from the first phase. Not the best thing for T2s, but maybe T1s would like it, meaning maybe more interesting T1 vs T1 matches.

Dates and venues revelation ceremony today at noon, Paris time.

I hope Italy may have a path similar to this: Americas 1, New Zealand, Africa 1, France.
And it would be nice to have a game in Nice, not far from the italian border

Opening match on Sep. 8th, 2023 between France and All Blacks.
Italy will have matches in Saint-Etienne, Nice and Lyon.
Let's see who we'll be Europe 2 and Final Qualifier. I would like Romania to take the Final Qualifier place. A match to watch in Toulouse or Saint-Etienne (against Australia) sounds better than Bordeaux or Lille.
I would also like to see a match in Marseille or Lyon.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
Short analysis of the schedule :
Team that play from first to last week/weekend of the group phase :
Pool A : FRANCE, NEW ZEALAND, ITALY
Pool B : IRELAND, EUROPE 2, SCOTLAND
Pool C : EUROPE 1, WALES, FIJI
Pool D : ENGLAND, ARGENTINA, JAPAN
Team that start later :
AMERICAS 1, ASIA/PACIFIC, PLAYOFF WINNER, OCEANIA 1
Team that finish earlier :
AFRICA 1, SOUTH AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, AMERICAS 2
Schedule for African qualifier is a bit bad (Last game on 27).

Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
Why Toulouse or Saint-Étienne sounds better to you than Bordeaux or Lille ?
Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
I like the Italy's hosting cities but I hoped in a different sequence of games: playing at the beginning with the seeds #4 and #5 and then with the #1 and #2 is the same sequence of the RWC 2019, for Italy, and it's not the ideal one, to me.
Curious thing: I don't know if it's the same in other languages but in italian both "bordeaux" and "lille" indicate a type of color. Bordeaux is a sort of wine color, lille is a sort of violet

It's not a personal thing. I like all french cities. It's just that Toulouse and St-Etienne are more reachable for me. The same for Lyon and Marseille.
Bordeaux I would like to see, but you have to cross all southern France and Lille is on north, another big travel.
When I said "sounds" I meant they "fit". I was not refering to the name sound.

I've added up rest days for each team. Africa 1 has the least rest days.

edit: added Japan edit2: fixed mistakes

Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
You are missing Japan.
Out of ten Tier 1, only two have less than 20 days.
Out of nine Tier 2, six have less than 20 days.
The same old shit.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
Nice table, I've already reposted it.
The tournaments is indeed becoming a bit elephantiac: twelve or thirteen days before two games are a lot, not easy for the fans to keep the tension. On the other hand it's true that Six Nations has often a two-weeks hiatus between two rounds, so maybe if it's good for 6N it could be good for RWC too

Re: Rugby World Cup 2023 Qualifying
Africa 1 will play last game on 27/09... Two days before New Zealand and Italy play their third game... It's completely stupid schedule...
In a logical world, New Zealand vs Italy game should had been scheduled on 27..
Since we have 5 teams pools in rugby world cup, it never happened before that a team play forth game before other teams third game. Thanks player welfare is a key point in that schedule.

Bordeaux is a color in french too, it comes from the Bordeaux wine

And for Lille, if you want the right pronounciation, don't say the "e"

Ok thanks I understand better ! That's right to say that South-East is well deserved ... easier to move from a point to another if you want to see various games.

The final qualifier is going be a great little tourney in its own right.
