What rugby broadcasts are on TV in your country?

Postby iul » Fri, 05 Jun 2020, 08:02

...not right now obviously, because of covid suspensions, but in general. What competitions are on TV. How often? Are they live? What channels are they on? Are the channels free to air or paid, and how expensive it is to watch them? How many people can watch them, and how many do watch the rugby broadcasts. How much are the TV stations paying for the broadcast rights, how does that compare to what they pay for other sports?, etc...

In France !

RWC : rights by TF1 group. All games were shown live on TF1 & TMC channels (FREE). Sometimes secondary games are sold to another channel (Eurosport 4 years ago, but you could see in free replay all the games).
6 Nations : all games live on France TV group (FR2) (FREE).
6 Nations U20 : all games of France live on FR4 (FREE)
6 Nations Women : all games of France live on France TV group (FR2 or FR4) (FREE)
Tests : all games of November for France live on France 2. France women's games live too on France 2 or 4 (FREE). Summer tour of France are on Canal+, as most of international tests from the Southern hemisphere, and Italy. England tests are on RMC Sport. Wales, Scotland, Ireland on Beinsports. L'Equipe has (had ?) Japan and Barbarians home games (FREE). French Barbarians home games, I don't remember ... France TV or l'Equipe, don't know who were the last (FREE).
Rugby Championship : all games shown by Canal+ group (don't know how they split it between Canal+ and Canal+Sport).
Junior WC : games of France on France TV, as the finale

Champions Cup : 2 games per week on France 2 (FREE), and all games on Beinsports.
Challenge Cup : 1 game per week on France 4 (FREE), 1 game on Beinsports

Top 14 : all games on Canal+ group channels, split between Canal+, Canal+Sport and rugby dedicated Rugby+. Final is live free on France 2.
--> 2019-2020 : saturday 15h15 (Canal+), multiplex (or dedicated channel on Rugby+) 18h15, 20h45 (Canal+Sport); sunday 12h00 (Canal+Sport), 16h45 (Canal+)
--> For 2020-2021 :20h45 friday (Canal+Sport), saturday 15h15 (Canal+), multiplex at 18h15 (Canal+Sport) - or on dedicated channel by Rugby+, sunday 21h00 (Canal+)

Pro D2 : rights are now hold by Eurosport. They show 2 games live per week, and all other on their player (live). One per week is shown on Canal+Sport. Local France 3 channels have one game per month (FREE, and nationally available you have internet access to TV). Finale is free on France 3.
For next year, Canal+ will hold the rights. It's still not clear how they will manage it. They might sell a part of it to Eurosport, France TV, or whoever want it. But as they lose many football rights, I think they will fully keep it and use Rugby + to show all the games.

Fédérale 1 : one game live, one game delayed on L'Equipe (FREE).

Elite 1 (Womens) : finale on France TV for free, regular season and final : some games on Eurosport.

Premiership : RMC Sports (don't know how many games per week)
Super Rugby : Canal+ (a few games per week on Canal+Sport and Rugby+).
Pro14 : nowhere I think - Beinsports had the rights, I don't think they show games anymore.
Currie Cup : some delayed games on Canal+Sport
Mitre Cup : some delayed games on Canal+Sport

HSBC Sevens Series : Canal+Sport - usually games of France, and semi + final; a bit more games when it's Paris tournament, maybe some on Canal+ too. I think you can see games on Rugby + too.
Supersevens : Canal+

XIII : NRL, World Cup, and some other games on BeinSports. L'Equipe has the french finale, a few tests from France. Super League was on BeIn, but nowhere for 2020 (rights too expensive).

--> so France TV (France 2, 3, 4) and l'Equipe are free, and everyone has access to it.
Canal+ main channel is around 20€, but there are regularly promotions. Canal+ and Canal+Sport, between 25/40, depending on promotions. Canal+, Canal+Sport, Rugby+ Eurosport, BeinSports : 45/55€. (all per months)
Eurosport : you can have the player for 3 to 5€ per months (so only by computer, but you have access to all channels + the player exclusivity)
BeinSports : on its own, 15€ per months
RMC Sport : 30/35 per month.

So basically, for 45/55€ you have everything you want, except RMC Sport.

But with free, you've already many things. It's one of the best covered free sports. And not that expensive if you want more or less everything.

For the rights acquisition :
- Top 14 : 97M€ per year by Canal+
- Pro D2 : new deal by Canal+ : 8M€ per year
- 6 Nations : 6,2M€ per year
- RWC : 45M€ for the Japan's one.
the others, I don't know ...

for TV rates :
A France 6N game : usually between 5-6 M people, sometimes more (depending on times, level)
Top 14 finale : around 3M on France 2, 800K/1M on Canal+
Top 14 : around 600K on Canal+ sunday afternoon; 200K sunday mid-day
Best Champions Cup games reached more than 2M people watching France 2 for final phases.
Last RWC finale : 5M people watching. France - Wales, nearly 7M.

Nationwide free to air:
BBC: 6N, Wales autumn games, some Scotland autumn games
ITV: 6N, RWC
C4: Ireland autumn games, 1 Champions Cup game per round
C5: 5 Premiership games, weekly Premiership highlights

Nationwide subscription services:
Sky: England autumn games, Rugby Championship, Super Rugby, Currie Cup, NPC, 7s World Series most events fully live, a few Championship games (2nd tier league)

BT: 4 Premiership Games a weekend, Champions & Challenge Cup games, a few random internationals in the Autumn (occasionally Scotland games for instance)

Premier Sports: Pro14, Italy and France Autumn games

Wales terrestrial, other avaible by satalite:
S4C (Welsh language channel): Some Pro14 I think, Welsh Premiership

Currently no one broadcasts the Top 14, Japanese League or MLR.

Viewing figures I haven't checked in a while, Premiership was c.150k on Friday night and 200K+ last time I check on BT Sports. Football normally gets about 800k on BT as a guide. England on Sky generally, 1m+ for big games but it can be pretty variable.

6N is normally about 10m for an England match, or around 5m or other matches I think. Last RWC got 19m or so I think, maybe more it was loads.

Not 100% on prices, sky generally costs £60 per month, BT tends to sell you broad band too, Sport is I think £15p/m on top of your broadband. Premier Sports is £10 p/m.

Rugby World Cup: all matches live on ESPN (TV)
Six Nations: all matches live on ESPN (TV)
The Rugby Championship: all matches live on ESPN (TV)
Tier 1 Tests (july and november): a couple of matches (usualy 2 each week) on ESPN (TV). Some matches just on Watch ESPN (online platform)
Lions Tour: in 2017, 3 main matches on ESPN (TV)

Americas Rugby Championship: all Tupis matches live on ESPN (TV). The other matches, some on TV, some just on Watch ESPN (online platform)
Tupis' tests: some matches on SPORTV, some on ESPN. Varies.

Super Rugby: all matches live on Watch ESPN (online platform only). Just the final (and maybe semifinals) goes to TV.
Heineken Champions Cup: all matches live on Watch ESPN (online platform only). Just some playoffs matches go to TV.
Premiership: some matches live on Watch ESPN (online platform only). Just the final goes to TV.
Top 14, PRO14, Top League, MLR, Currie Cup, Mitre10Cup etc nobody shows. No Rugby League either.

Sevens World Series (men's and women's): all matches live on Watch ESPN (online platform only). Highlights on TV.
Multisports events (Olympics, Pan-American Games) vary. Usualy SPORTV shows the rugby sevens events.

SLAR: nothing yet
Brazilian club rugby: used to have the final on SPORTV, but not anymore. There are matches on a local online platform called TV NSports

As you see, rugby in Brazil is basicaly an ESPN thing. BTW, it is usualy ESPN2 (third chanel). ESPN has two main channels above "ESPN2". They are:"ESPN Brasil", dedicated to journalism and soccer, and "ESPN" (just "ESPN"), dedicated to all sports (loaded with soccer and American sports). Sometimes they show rugby on ESPN, when the match is too big (like RWC finals). The difference is that ESPN2 is not available in the cheapest subscriptions.

Ìn Argentina and Uruguay, ESPN airs most rugby competitions, especially UAR competitions, the Super Rugby, Rugby Championship, World Cup and 6 Nations.

They also show French and English club leagues, and the European Champions Cup. Not sure about Pro14. They don't air the South Africa competitions unless there's an Argentine team.

Mind that most rugby is on ESPN3, which is not always available in basic cable packages.

The Sevens World Series has alternated between ESPN and Fox Sports. That situation is now moot, since Disney bought the international Fox operations. The channels have been merging, in particular with Fox programming appearing on ESPN channels.
