Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
Well, we were supposed to be welcoming the first game of the RET competition for this season this very weekend, but of course we now have to wait a bit further.
Nevertheless, here's a new thread for all things 20-21 in all REIC.

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
It looks like Azerbaijan will be out of the competition for a while (their last year was 2013). They published a development plan for 2020-2026 and to return to RE compeitions is listed as a long term goal http://en.rugby.az/index.php?newsid=41 Anyway, good to know they are working with the Georgian Rugby Union.

Morariu said in this talk (min 37) today that Rugby Europe is working on three scenarios for next year and expects to take a decision by mid-December:

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
I've see just some minutes of the video (interesting idea, a public round table with the presidents of Rugby Afrique, Rugby Europe, Sudamerica Rugby and Asia Rugby) and I've heard Morariu talking also about a development program alongside RWC 2023, organized by FFR and Rugby Europe and to which Morariu invited also Babbou and his Rugby Afrique ("thank you, very appreciated", the answer is)
I don't know which kind of development program it is, anyway; the video is too long to watch it all

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
They didn't say much, apart from explaining it was similar to the agreement reached with England for 2015. At that time each European nation was tied to an England county with freedom to develop their own projects.
Spain for example was tied to Northumberland and IIRC there we're referee exchanges, RFU helped to structure our young players path within FER and even a couple of years after RWC our women's national team played a friendly game there.

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
Anyway I like the idea of the continental presidents discussing together publicly. In the section of the video that I watched they didn't say too much, they were quite generic and maybe it can't be different, but ideally it's a good concept.
All the four presidents gave me a good feeling, they seem good persons

Board of Directors meets on Tuesday, they'll discuss whether to complete REC 2020 or cancel it and possibly promote Netherlands as the 7th team

That's interesting, but a 7-nations REC would be a mess for an already trembling calendar
About the past: I've read that the today's retiring Nigel Owens debuted internationally in Portugal v Georgia 2003. Is there not a video of that match? On google I haven't found anything

NEITHER VIDEO NOR VIDEO-REF
16/02 JAMOR | POR 34:30 GEO | t 3/4
When GEO was in front by 30:24 deep into last quarter
and thought they have scored 5th try,
Nigel requested TMO by "square screen" gesture and
grimaced at learning it was NOT available at ENC level
In injury time GEO#12 got sin-binned and
POR scored winning converted try

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
2021 will be a "qualifying year": it should involve RWC'21 qualifiers, Olympic'21 last qualifiers men and women, R7sWC '22 qualifiers men and women, RWC '23 qualifiers

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
Not convinced by playoff winner having a more balanced schedule, but hey, at least we've got a plan. Welcome.
And I really hope last round will all be played in Eastern Europe countries. It's lunacy playing in Portugal or Spain in July.

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
If this draw was confirmed, the play-off between the REC bottom team and the Netherlands should be the first explicit game of the RWC'23 qualifiers.
Or, well, maybe also the 5th february games could be considered direct part of the qualifiers

Lado's post draw now confirmed

I would have liked to see infos also about women REC, women RWC qualifiers and maybe also about 7s events, but the communicate talks just about men's REC

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
Do we know if there will be relegation between the 2021 REC edition and the 2022 one?

Based on roomers I have, the schedule of RET would be the same as in your post (i.e. deleted by RE). In other words 4 round will be played in March, and the last round - in the beginning of July. Rest of July is for international tests.

Maybe they deleted because Round 4 is outside the 6N window? Probably going to July, together with Round 5? That would make sense.

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
IIRC RWC qualifiers are protected whenever they are played, even outside normal windows.
Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
The plan is to start at the beginning of February. I think RE forgot that half of the Romanian team was sick when they played against Georgia on 1st of Feb 2020. How will they be sure that it will not happen the same again? Some Heineken matches have been canceled for this weekend because Exeter players were found positiv and the Glasgow players have been now put in quarantine. Does RE think that in February the things will get better? In my opinion it was a mistake to cancel the matches in November. They should have played them how it was planned. What you got in your hand is not lying (Romanian say). Now they are trying to sell the bear's skin from the woods (other Romanian saying).

Re: Rugby Europe International Championships 2020-2021
There must be some internal chaos regarding how many games are played in March, because in its internal schedule FER just put twice the game against Belgium, once in March and one in late June.

* SCORE(LINE)S ENCLOSED in PARENTHESIS () --
as secondary, non-important stuff

** GAME SHEETS DELETED altogether -- who NEED them

POINTS BREAKDOWN (into T C P D) should be enough in 21st century

*** TABLE simplified -- much less columns retained
DIFFERENCE (F-A) & TRY COUNT are MUSTS for me -- maybe, NOT for EVERYBODY
