No, on the contrary, they are offended when they are mistakenly called Germans. During World War II, they even suffered because of this. They were considered Germans, so they were sent to labor camps.

Dutch in SA have retained their surnames while Golendrs have German surnames.

When they left Holland, they may not have had surnames yet. And they got surnames when they lived in Germany. And in the 16th century there was no particular difference between the Dutch and the Germans. Therefore, the surnames and first names do not say anything. Moving eastward, they gradually changed.

By the way, there create a great idea for a new trophy. To hold a yearly match of the Amur Tigers against the Russian national team for the Taiga Cup. Amur Tigers are a mixed team analogue of Barbarians. It can be played by Russian players who did not make the Russian national team (Bitiev, Kushnarev, Simplikevich, Sidorov ...), as well as foreign players (Marais, Ekstin, Douwrie, du Preez, De Wit, Greef ...). Our skeptics are idiots criticizing this idea. But it is obviously much better than the creation of the Russia A.

Afrikaners are descended from Dutch, German and French people, and as such their surnames are Dutch, German and French.

They are a mixture but a nation needs a language and they chose Dutch because they were there under the Dutch.
Like USA chose English but they didn't have to. They could have chosen a different language like German.

Many Europeans came to live in Russian Empire. Our nobility spoke French throughout 18 century, a lot of noble families are of foreign origin. And several tens of thousands of Napoleons army stayed here. Unfortunately in USSR Germans were deprived of their autonomy during the war. Now there is German cultural autonomy in 43 constituent entities of Russia.

English nobility also spoke French for hundreds of years. Old English and French merged into English by the time of the Tudors which is when the British (English) Empire began. French is still our de facto second language. Without the French influence we would basically be speaking a kind of Dutch.

By the way Italians built Kremlin for us. Medieval Russia is a country that was constantly forced to survive. There was no time to invent and to engag in science. It was necessary to grow food in risk farming area and fight.
Therefore they accepted any Europeans as bearers of knowledge.

Even prisoners of European armies invading Russia were not killed or sent to hard labor. They were released and allowed to marry local women.

Katyn is USSR, not Russian Empire. Then Stalin took revenge for destruction of Soviet prisoners in Poland.
In USSR it was not popular in a Christian way to turn other cheek.
