Re: South American rugby
Big game for Brazil. IF they can win they'll take second spot and claim a place in the CONSUR Cup to play ARG at home next year. That would be the biggest home game for BRA ever probably.

Paraguay 31 - 24 Brazil
Didn't watch but read there were a couple of cracking tries for both sides. Paraguayan major media outlets congratulating the team on Twitter... the game is in pretty good health in South America.

Re: South American rugby
So it's Paraguay that will get a home tilt at the Pumas next year. Brazil must be kicking themselves...for the love of three points! Apparently there's civil war in Chilean rugby at the mo. Don't know why some tier two-three unions have a discouraging tendency to shoot themselves in the foot. Paraguay got badly beaten in CONSUR A a few years ago and for the same reason.
this from ARG2023 Blog:
this from ARG2023 Blog:
Chile's team that took on Uruguay, and earlier both Brazil and Paraguay, was for all intents purposes Chile B. The internal crisis involving Chilean rugby saw a weak side take to the field for all three test matches and the country now faces the possibility of losing to Argentina by a record margin in the CONSUR Cup.
Re: South American rugby
Uruguay to play Argentina 17 May in Paysandu, at the below football stadium. I think this may be the first time the Teros have taken a home match away from the capital.

Re: South American rugby
According to this, Paraguay will play in the Americas Rugby Championship against the A sides of Argentina, Canada and the US. Set for Toronto next October: http://www.abc.com.py/deportes/polidepo ... 46710.html
Ex Puma Mauricio Reggiardo is advising them currently. It seems the UAR are forging strong links with the Paraguayan union.

Uruguay to be unavailable due to repechage? That's big for Paraguay.
Edit: wonder what the venue in Toronto will be?
Edit: wonder what the venue in Toronto will be?
Re: South American rugby
Huh, interesting. I can't image it will be BMO field (since it's just A-Teams). Lamport Stadium (home of the rugby league team) holds about 10,000, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it in Fletcher's Field (capacity ~3,000) in Markham (North of Toronto)
Re: South American rugby
One positive thing about the emergence of Paraguay is that it's a pretty young country overall, with an average median age just below 25. Which seems to be reflected in the stands when I've watched their home matches.
For comparison, the average median age in both Japan and Italy is about 44. Uruguay is around 33, Brazil and Argentina both close to 30.

Apparently not. They're reached out to the IRB inquiring why Paraguay were invited over them.

Even if they're in repechage I'm sure Uruguay would've liked to put an A side in.

Re: South American rugby
In the past Uruguay hasn't entered an A side into the comp, though. It's always been their full test side, albeit with a somewhat experimental slant. Even though a Uruguayan A side might be stronger than a full Paraguayan test side, it's a big opportunity for Paraguay to test themselves against higher competition and get some good publicity for the game in Paraguay. It would be so great if we could get a few other teams in the Americas up to a Uruguay-type level or higher and get a Pan American championship.

Re: South American rugby
Maybe with Uruguay doing the RWCQ still they thought it would be a good chance to give another South American country a shot while keeping the ARC at a simple 4 team format? Playing Argentina, Canada and America has definitely helped out Uruguay so maybe we should spread the love around.
Anyways as bad as this is for Uruguay it's great for Paraguay, especially if Uruguay were to get added back in. Playing the Jaguars, USA Selects and Canada A will do more for them than playing the likes of Chile and Brazil. Uruguay is already a tough enough test and Paraguay, Brazil and Chile are getting better. If we can get Mexico to a respectable level then we could have a hell of a continental tournament. For the next ARC I'd hope for a 6 team format with Paraguay, Chile, Brazil and the next top ranked CONSUR/NACRA national team having a playoff for the final two spots behind the Big 4.
As for the venue in Toronto, I'd say Lamport would be a logical location. As was stated above it's the home of Canada's Rugby League team so it should be decent venue. BMO is too big for the ARC in it's current format. Even Lamport and it's near 10k seats seems a tad large.

Re: South American rugby
Is it viable to think about an ARC home and away with full-strenght Canada and USA? I think about a competition played during Rugby Championship period. Argentina could field a Jaguares team, that would provide activity for Super Rugby Argentina's franchise players that were left out of Pumas, with also local players (let's think it in ITM Cup/NRC/Currie Cup logic)
South American Championship and NACRA Championship could be the second divisions for ARC, with promotion/relegation playoffs. Of course ARC fourth side would be left out of South American Championship, as Argentina was in 2014 (playing just the CONSUR Cup).
Exemple:
ARC: Argentina (Jaguares), Uruguay, Canada and USA
SAC: Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Colombia - champion vs Jaguares or Uruguay / bottom relegated to SAC B
NAC: Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Bermuda and Cayman - champion vs Canada or USA / bottom relegated to NAC B

Re: South American rugby
Not realistic due to all of the overseas pros. You could get a domestic Eagles side, but then that's basically what we send to the ARC anyway. Personally, I'd be in favor of moving the ARC to August as many college players in the US can't take the time off school to play in the ARC in October.
Re: South American rugby
victorsra, I like the way you're thinking, but I don't think it's viable.
1. What Coloradoan wrote.
2. Uruguay's national team came in last place when playing the Canada A and USA Selects. They'd do even worse against the full strength squads.
3. The other NACRA teams are so far below Canada & the US it'd be worthless to have a game with them at this point. I'd imagine it's a similar situation with the CONSUR teams, although probably not as bad?

Re: South American rugby
I think the main issues are the costs of the trips. The same way Argentina now use Europe-based players in RC, Canada and USA could do the same. It's a matter of IRB make it possible (which of course is not simple). Both need a better competition out of june/november fixtures, like 6N and RC nations.
Uruguay will lose all the matches, indeed, but they proved against USA they can perform well with a strong calendar ahead. As far as I remember in all ARC competition till now Uruguay used a squad mixed with youngsters and veterans. RWC Qualy squad was stronger, even without Capó Ortega. This model was used once in RWC 2003 and RWC 1999 Qualys.
About NACRA playoff, yes, there a huge difference, but this could be a match for Canada/USA amateurs/varsity players. It's important to keep a promotion path open.
Colombia vs Brazil/Chile/Paraguay is also an uneven match, but CONSUR need to provide a promotion path for now South American B nations.

Re: South American rugby
I could see the NACRA winner maybe play a team from the BC or Ontario Premier leagues. Maybe even the Alberta premier league or Newfie league(I don't know anything about them though). Someone made it clear to me how bad the other NACRA nations really are in a different thread. I use to think we should send down one of the CRC teams(BC Bears, Prairie Wolf Pack, Ontario Blues, The Rock) but now I realize that's a bad idea for a good long while yet. And the NACRA teams already play USA South so they have experience against a not so strong US side.
