2019 FIBA World Cup
Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
Tough luck NZ, didn’t lose to Greece by much.
Australia beat Lithuania to go to 3-0. Looking good IMO.

Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
Now that Spain has narrowly beaten Italy in the ugliest of matches I can say without any kind of suspicion that the level of refereeing in this tournament has been appalling. Here refs left both Italian and Spanish teams without a f****** clue of what they were calling.
Belinelli would be a worthy winner of the "worst NBA to FIBA transition" accolade, Marc Gasol at least made the key shot.

Yeah we gave them a hard fight but their NBA guy got them through unlike our NBA guy who wasn't even there

At least we are 3-0 in the challenge bracket and got revenge v Japan for our recent warm-up loss. Though we're not in the main bracket, these games are still important. Doing well we might just about slither into qualify for the final Olympics qualifying tournament. Who knows then, maybe Steven Adams might finally remember he has a NZ passport and suit up for our team.

Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
Refs are ruining this tournament. Jokic out of a beautiful game for a claim he was right about.
Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
Greece is out.
Btw refs are very very bad. The play that got Jokic ejected was a blatantly obvious foul. I don't get when they review a scene. Seems it is totally random. I haven't watched basketball for a while, but since when is it allowed to have a moving screen? It was not allowed when I used to watch a lot of basketball.

Still a foul. Whether FIBA refs will call it is another question.

Wow, Serbia got schooled again by Argentina in QF and is KO.
I can only feel for them, it rings a bell to Spanish fans, very similar to 2014.

France knocks USA out. Going to make the things very interesting. Assuming Australia advances I can see any of the four semifinalists winning it all. Spain probably slight favorites.

Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
Don't think so, I'd put all my money on France. With this Gasol and Hernangómez it would be a feast for Gobert... and that's in the case we make the final, because I fear the Aussies.

Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
Spain wins it in a nailbiting match after two OT and Marc Gasol waking up in time. Australia will feel aggrieved by refereeing, but unfortunately that was to be expected after how the tournament has taken place so far. Sorry.
Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
France knocked out. Gobert a complete non factor after his strong performance vs USA.
Good matchup for the final. Most of the players know each other from the Spanish league.
Vamos Argentina!

Argentina went cold in the final. Congrats to Spain though. Best team in the tournament.

The issue is that FIBA flipped and screwed up their own cycle. Instead of having the World Cup two years out from the Olympics they decided to go back to back. So NBA players are like: FUCK THAT.

Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
Not all NBA players... I still have a reasonable doubt about what would have changed if played in 2018 or earlier in the summer.
Re: 2019 FIBA World Cup
if rumours are true then 5v5 Basketball will no longer exist at the Olympic Games. IMO a lose-lose situation.

I can't believe this can happen. A relatively small numbers of players for a team sport and one of the biggest games on the planet, if they should cut something it is men's soccer. Totally senseless at the Games to have the young millionaires stealing even more air-time from all the other under-funded sports.

Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

I couldn't believe soccer holds its World Cup in december. It happened.
I couldn't believe soccer World Cup would expand to 48 teams. It happened.
From a FIBA perspective it's a nice thought to have something big for their own purse

Nah, I never had doubts about the first two things, once it was seriously discussed. There is money in it and nobody involved in the decision will be worse off.
But cutting Basketball from the Olympics? That's on another level.
