Georgian war graves in the Netherlands

Postby NedRugby » Wed, 24 Mar 2021, 15:49

I couldn't find a thread for this so I'm starting one, although there isn't much to discuss.

I am taking my first break since Covid, and am spending a week on the Dutch island of Texel. Completely out of the blue we turned a corner and found a very well-kept graveyard for Georgian war dead. It seems bizarre that there should have been Georgians in this part of Europe in WWII, but it turns out they were more or less conscripted by the Germans. Towards the end of the war they rebelled and many German soldiers were killed. The rebellion was ultimately unsuccessful, but a couple of hundred went underground and survived the last few weeks of the war.

Only volunteers fought in Georgian legion, Germans did not forcibly mobilize anyone. In general after Red Army crossed Polish border many antifascists formed in Europe.

According to Wikipedia (I don't have a better source): "They had been given a choice: the captured soldiers could choose either to remain in the prisoner of war camps, which would have meant abuse, starvation, and very possibly death, or to serve in the German military and be allowed a degree of freedom. The battalion was formed of men who chose the latter option. Anti-communist emigres living in Western Europe also joined these units; see Georgian Legion (1941–45)."

So technically you are correct. They weren't conscripted as such. But many felt they had little choice.

There is always a choice ...
We had same antifascists who raised uprising in 1945. Here in Russia they are despised and hated. Usually they were not taken prisoner and killed on spot ...

By the way in Russia a new film is being released about a prisoner who stole a bomber from Germans and flew away to his own.
This is a real case.

In Eastern Europe crowds of bloody pigs from national SS formations walk every year.
At least this was case before coronavirus.

Doesnt Brussels know about this?

Local old people told me. By the way German prisoners built a dam after war so that would not flood. They built 6 barracks and then lived there. Two survived.

Germans were almost not guarded, there was nowhere to run, locals fed them ...
Then they were sent home to Germany.

Interesting story. 500 Soviet prisoners fled from a concentration camp in Austria, they were hunted by everyone from local residents to police and army killing them on the spot.
11 people survived. Austrian family hid 2 people at risk of their own lives.

Еxtreme left and right are former Soviet prisoners of war.

Recently Putin awarded this family with Order of Courage, unfortunately posthumously.
