Is this the first time both the men and women have played in the same venue for a SWS stop? Should be interesting, at least!

Apart from Dubai, obviously, yes it would be a first. London in 2015 claimed to be a double header, but as you had to pay separately to get into the men's and women's events it really wasn't!
Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2016-2017
Great to see Vegas! But I think it would be interesting to see some tournament in San Francisco as a test event thinking about 2018.
And I must say it is a bit frustrating that Brazil is still to anounce the new womens sevens coach. Chris Neill, the New Zealander the coached Brazil until the Olympics, is not anymore with the team.

Brazilian Rugby Union anounced today the New Zealander Reuben Samuel, current Waikato women's head coach, as the new coach of the Brazilian womens sevens team.
Is he good?

Going on on Waikato's results, yes. Not a great year this year, but reached the final of the NPC a couple of times.

Seven Olympians (Ruby Tui, Shakira Baker, Niall Williams, Sarah Goss, Tyla Nathan-Wong, Kelly Brazier and Portia Woodman) and 2 new faces (Tenika Willison and Rebekah Cordero-Tufuga) in the final 12 while a further 2 new faces named as travelling reserves Jess Drummond and Danielle Paenga.
Looks like Sarah Goss has recovered from injury and that Portia Woodman and Kelly Brazier will fly down to join the team after the Canada game. Probably why they are carrying 2 travelling reserves.

Despite a handful of players returning to the XVs program ahead of the 2017 WRWC along with an injury to one of the best players in the world, Jen Kish, I think our girls should continue to be a tough one to play against.
Canada’s Roster for Dubai Sevens (Name, club, hometown):
Britt Benn – Guelph Redcoats (Napanee, ON)
Hannah Darling – Peterborough Pagans (Warsaw, ON)
Bianca Farella – Town of Mont Royal (Montreal, QC)
Julia Greenshields – Sarnia Saints (Sarnia, ON)
Sara Kaljuvee – Toronto Scottish (Ajax, ON)
Ghislaine Landry – Toronto Scottish (Toronto, ON)
Megan Lukan – Unattached (Barrie, ON)
Kayla Moleschi - Williams Lake Rustlers (Williams Lake, BC)
Breanne Nicholas – London St. Georges (Blenheim, ON
Ashley Steacy – Lethbridge Rugby Club (Lethbridge, AB)
Natasha Watcham-Roy – Hull Volant (Gatineau, QC)
Charity Williams – Markham Irish (Toronto, ON)

Fiji have named 13 players. 8 Olympians. No sign of Tavo - I guess that she was just there for the Olympics. Rather cruel for the Fijians who want to represent their country, Olympics or no.

Any news about the relegation system in the Women's Series? And what about the qualifying system for 2017-18?

Two uncapped players for SA (Christelene Steinhobel and Eloise Webb). Despite what the article says Nadine Roos and Nomsa Mokwai have represented SA before - Mokwai during the 2014 and 2016 Rugby Africa 7s tournaments and Roos during this year's RA 7s tournament.

Zenay Jordaan

Nomsa Mokwai

Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2016-2017
Ireland, Brazil and South Africa will play the Dubai Sevens. But I can't find any information about World Sevens qualifying.
Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2016-2017
Ireland and Brazil are now core teams. There are 11 core teams. South Africa is the invited team of Dubai's leg.
Last season the 9 best core teams kept the status and the other 2 spots were decided in the Olympics (1 spot, Brazil) and in the Olympics Qualy (Ireland), with the core teams that failed to finish among the 9 best (Japan and Ireland) having the chance to keep the status on those tournaments.
Now how will it work? Will the Womens Sevens follow the Men's series and have the 11th core team relegated and the winner of a Qualy tournament (just with non-core teams) promoted? Or they will keep the model and those core teams that finish bottom will still have the chance in a Qualy tournament to keep the status?
I prefer the men's simple system.
