2019 Hong Kong Sevens
Re: 2019 Hong Kong Sevens
would be too much to ask that federations with 2 starters don't go into the same group?

Yes, I noticed that too. Both African teams in pool B, both South Americans in Pool C. It's not unusual for draws to be rigged to avoid this kind of thing.
I think Japan would probably be favourites, with Brazil also having a fair chance. From my own point of view I'd like to see a European team through. Belgium did really well last time, but I'm not sure they can sustain that level.

Kenya were very narrowly defeated in the semi-finals last year, so may be a threat - but very hard to see beyond Japan, who are stronger than China if recent results are accurate.
Heaven knows what would happen to Scotland if they won it as they really do not have the base to play World Series and Six Nations at the same time.

Apologies. I had not noticed that a separate topic had been created for HK 7s until now, so I have deleted this off the "Women's 7s - general news" topic that I had posted it on originally and posted it here instead.

Nice whole page about Uganda Lady Cranes on a national newspaper. It's a bit surprising that they depart today for Hong Kong. A week journey must be not cheap for a Federation that you would imagine not rich as the Ugandan one. Maybe they are funded by World Rugby

All flights, accommodation and meals for all teams (for 15 people) are fully funded by World Rugby from 31st March to 6/7th April.

Re: 2019 Hong Kong Sevens
Four of the squads for the qualifier have women coaches - Brazil, Japan, PNG and Uganda - which must be a record of some sort. I cannot off-hand think of any major women's tournament with such a high percentage of women coaches.
Only a third of the teams, but still a step forward.

When the second round of the pool phase is almost ended we see a big risk of elimination for Mexico, Hong Kong, Uganda and Poland. It will be interesting Kazakhstan v Brazil, starting in some minutes

Brazil doesn't have a woman coach... it is Reuben Samuel, a NZ man. The only woman in the staff is the manager.
Re: 2019 Hong Kong Sevens
wow, much much better results from Poland than I expected. Papua New Guinea also far better than I thought

Argentina giving Brazil a hard time was a highlight. I am a bit concerned after 3 narrow wins, although Brazil and Japan are the favorites to reach the final.

They're team managers not coaches - only one female coach (from Uganda) at the tournament

Apologies - I stupidly saw the word "coach" next to their names on the World Rugby tournament website and assumed they were coaches.
My bad.

Really annoying the lack of knowledge about Latin names from the commentators of the English-speaking broadcast. No one is supposed to be called by 3 family names. No one is "Dos Santos Silva", "Da Silva Costa"...

Dos is a family name

Trolling apart, what are the rules? In Brazil you use the mother's name first and the father's name second, right? In the Spanish speaking countries it is the other way round, right²?
How to grow rugby worldwide?
Look at the world ranking in July. Teams ranked 1-10 have to play one team from 11-20 (they don't play in a regular competition) away the next year. 11-20 play 21-30 away and so on. Yes, it really is that simple.

Scotland vs Brazil in the final. Japan couldn't quite make it... it's not that easy winning this one, is it.
