They took part in and hosted the Euro qualifier and - as things stand - they are still in the repechage
Re: 2020 Olympics
According to this brief article, the women Olympic qualifying repechage will be in june 2021 in Ireland
https://lapresse.tn/65335/rugby-en-prev ... afrique-d/
Four tunisian players were allowed to miss the first preparation stage because they're studying for the high school final exam.
The same article explains that Tunisia will host the Africa Cup (women 7s, I suppose) in 2021, 2022, 2023.
The 2021 edition will be in the month of October: "it will be a good preparation step for the Olympic repechage tournament"

Re: 2020 Olympics
Hard to trust information like that from some sources, but it sounds reasonsable (at least in regard to timing) as TBH its going to have to be as late as that if there is any hope of getting it in before the Games themselves, and everyone taking part - including Tunisia - will be wanting to get time for some tournament play in beforehand.Canalina wrote:According to this brief article, the women Olympic qualifying repechage will be in june 2021 in Ireland

You do wonder, though, whether Ireland would host if they do not make the repechage (and that will be a tough ask). The most likely alternative will be France I think.
Re: 2020 Olympics
I checked (I didn't remember) and Ireland is part of the men's repechage. So, if this info by the Tunisian newspaper is true, the most natural deduction seems that Ireland will host men's and women's repechage in the same days

Four years ago, on August 6th 2016, the Olympic rugby tournament in Rio started.

For Welsh and Scottish women I guess it is good because they could become professionals. Wales and Scotland have no real plans for their women's sevens....
Re: 2020 Olympics
The Tokyo 2021 website dedicated an article to Alhambra Nievas, former top referee and now World Rugby refereeing responsible
She says also that NZ Selica Winiata is now in the international group of referees, I didn't know

Re: 2020 Olympics
Heard a few rumours that Rugby Canada are considering not sending their athletes to Japan. Which has resulted in a few players are already talking to the 15's coach about switching programs and playing in the world cup. The plan is to travel to NZ a month before the world cup to quarantine and prepare for the tourney.
Re: 2020 Olympics
It would be a bad blow for experienced players like Farella, which I suppose kept playing all these last years with just Tokyo in mind

She is exactly one of the girls that is in the mix to jump to 15's, Williams also.
Re: 2020 Olympics
As collateral effect (certainly not the worst one) this epidemia will create holes in the rolls of honor of the sport competitions. Maybe the Olympics next year can't be played, or maybe some team sports will have to be cancelled, or maybe they won't be cancelled but some teams will withdraw, like perhaps Canada rugby is mumbling to do. This will make the sport results of these years jagged and not completely meaningful. But of course this is not so important; the main thing is to defeat the virus, soon or later

The virus is with us for ever now, just like the Spanish Flu (really it was started in USA) we won't beat it but will need to learn to live with it better. (not everyone will get the shot just as not everyone gets the flu shot)

Do you know if Russia may compete in the Olympics under a neutral flag and, in case of negative answer, do you remember which team should substitue them in the qualifiers?

PS: auto-answer, it should be Spain
