National teams nicknames
I thought there was already a thread about but maybe it's gone lost
Let's start with Oceania, cause today I've learned that Manu Sina means white terns (a seabird typical of Samoa and other south-pacific islands). About Australia's nick, the wallaroos are bigger than the wallabies but smaller than the kangaroos (in Italy we just call them all "canguri"): their name walla-roos should express right this middleness between walla-bies and kanga-roos.
Oceania
New Zealand … Black Ferns
Australia … Wallaroos
Fiji … Fijiana ?
Samoa … Manu Sina (=white terns)
Tonga …
Papua Guinea … Cassowaries (the most dangerous bird in the World)
Solomon ...
French Polynesia … Hine? (but it should mean just "girls, women")
American Samoa …
Cook …
Vanuatu …
Tuvalu …
Asia
Japan … Sakura (=cherry blossoms)
China …
Honk Kong …
Singapore …
Kazakhstan …
Malaysia …
Europe
England … Red Roses
Italy … Azzurre (the light blue colored)
Poland … Białoczerwony ? (the white & red colored)
Romania … Ghindele (=acorns, men's team is "Stejari", the oaks)
Spain … las Leonas (the lionesses)
Finland … Furies ?
Africa
Rwanda … Blackbacks (gorillas with a black back)
Uganda … Lady Cranes
Zimbabwe … Pangolins (pangolins are animals similar to the armadillos)
Americas
Usa ... Eagles
Canada ... Maple Leafs ?
Brazil ... Yaras

Re: National teams nicknames
Romania: Ghindele (the acorns)... as in the nuts or fruits or what they are from the oak tree
Re: National teams nicknames
Brazil = Yaras ("the mother of the waters" in Tupi mythology.... it is like a mermaid... aka Uiara or Iara)
Re: National teams nicknames
France : Les Bleues (the blues, same as the guys but in its feminine way)

Re: National teams nicknames
The Red Roses is not a good nickname for the England rugby team. An English rose is what we call a very elegant classy beautiful young English woman. And the team wears white, same as the men's team.
England netball team is called the Roses which suits them as they are mostly tall slim young and beautiful.
England football team is called the Lionesses which is a pretty cool name for them.

Re: National teams nicknames
Maybe the name is in reference/opposition so "Black Ferns" (colour + plant)?

I can't see anything wrong with classy being associated with a women's rugby team, especially since the sports roots are very much high class.

Re: National teams nicknames
Roses have sharp prickles. Sounds very rugby-ish to me.
