Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
You'd have thought they'd have played together but I can never remember them doing so. Last time I saw Navrat was at Amsterdam in 2014 - she only played a couple of games, seemed off the pace, and was injured for the second day.
She was still in the extended squad last year, but my guess is that Navrat may have stepped back from the game, possible for academic reasons. She also played for a Russian student team that won a student title, also in 2014 IIRC. So she is probably still playing, but not at international level.

Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
Looks like World Rugby have changed the QF draw rules... without telling anyone (or changing the website)!
According to the rules on the WSWS website it should still be:
"Seed 1 V Seed 8
Seed 4 V Seed 5
Seed 3 V Seed 6
Seed 2 V Seed 7"
Which should have been:
Australia (3 wins,+79PD) v Spain,
Canada v England,
Fiji v NZ (3 wins, +36) and
Russia (3wins +71) v France
But instead we've got:
2nd v 8th,
1st v 6th,
3rd v 7th and
4th v 5th
So by the looks of it that is a random draw of the top 4 seeds against the bottom 4. Which makes sense, especially after France's slightly suspicious loss to the Dutch in the Euros, but it really would be nice if they announced these things!

Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
Some surprising results there. USA struggling, whereas last season I thought they were starting to get quite good. Russia seem to be back to their best. I didn't see any matches, just looking at the results. Is this the first time NZ failed to reach the semi-finals ?
Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
Canada vs New Zealand in the Plate final? Wacky. Great showing by Russia.

Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
Hi everyone. Question...
How many teams, from the 11 that are Core, will play the next qualification tournament?
Last 2, last 3?
Thanks!

Last year is was bottom two but as with many things to do with this series.... who knows? WR do have a habit of almost making it up as they go along (for example, they are not following several areas of the "tournament rules" for 15/16, as published on their own website).

Any examples? I'm not too familiar with the tournament rules.

Well, the most obvious one is the quarter-final draw. If you check the rules on the website they still show the old method, not the system that has been used since Dubai
Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
A pity for Canada in Langford, they won the three pool matches without conceding a try, then leaded 12-0 against France until three minutes to the end, finally they lost 12-14
Happy for Bianca Farella, a drop of Italy in the tournament: she has already scored five tries
Main semifinals are Australia v England, New Zealand v France

Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
First tournament win for England for a long time. France did really well too, pushing NZ really hard in the semi. In fact I think they were a bit unlucky with some of the refereeing calls towards the end of normal time. Possibly that exhausting match for NZ just gave England the extra edge. England really did well though, beating Aus in the semis and NZ in the final. Fisher was in great form - I never knew she had speed as well as strength. I missed her last season, does anyone know if she was injured or just lost favour? I remember her being in an England development team which played a triangular tournament with NL and a French development team.
Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
Any news about how many teams from 2015-16 season will qualify as core teams for the 2016-17 season? 9 best teams again (like in 2014-15 to 2015-16)? or 10 this time?

Well, they did quite well: they won 5 matches out of six defeating also the eventual winner England, in the whole tournament they scored 21 tries and conceded just 3. But two of those conceded tries were in the worst moment and they finished just fifth…
I have a question too: do you know why
this (released by WR before Langford) http://s1.postimg.org/wwd9n3xdr/wss.jpg
and this (now, after Langford) http://www.worldrugby.org/womens-sevens ... yers/tries
are different?
Farella for example scored 5 tries in Langford, so according to the first scheme should be at 62 all-time tries, but she have just 54 in the updated WR page

- Top 9 from the 2015/16 series
- The highest ranked team from the Global Repechage which is not already prequalified
- The highest ranked team from the Olympic Games which is not already prequalified
That makes 11.

TBH - USA aside - most hosts tend to underperform, in the WSWS anyway.

No idea why... Probably because WR's records are spotty at best.

Thanks for the info Rugby7. Was this officially released by WR or is it just being whispered?

This means no WSS-specific Qualy tournament

WR information, no guessing involved.ugrugbychiclet wrote:Was this officially released by WR or is it just being whispered?

And it also means that South Africa are unfairly hit again by their Olympic Committee refusal of their place in Rio. Winners in Hong Kong, on current form South Africa would have stood a great chance of making at least the quarters in Rio.
The Netherlands surprise loss to Portugal in the European repecharge last year also comes back to haunt them.
Re: Women's World Sevens Series 2015-16
For Brazil it is good. Spain will finish 9th.
This means Russia and Spain will play the Global Repechage but won't compete for the WSS places. Ireland is the lucky one with this. Good chance for China too.
In the Olympics, there will be a paralel competition between Brazil, Japan, Colombia and Kenya. Basically it will be a Japan-Brazil affair in Rio. But the groups can be unfair and we can see one of them going to the quarterfinals due to an easier group and the WSS place could be decided without matches between Japan and Brazil.
About South Africa's Olympic Comitee, it is just sad. A decision totaly against Olympic's and Rugby's spirit.
